Liverpool fan here. I've seen you've signed Brendan Rodgers as your new manager, hope he does well! I used to watch Celtic a lot when I was a bit younger back in the O'Neill days.
I'm just curious now though of what you would deem a successful season. Obviously, for a team like Celtic in a weaker league, winning the league is not enough, so does success lie in the domestic cups, or European progress of which there's been little of note lately.
Just curious of everyone's opinions! Look forward to your replies!

I think it's the whole package mate - it's not black and white. It's not just about the youth players he brings through, or his signing policy. It's not just about domestically or Europe, it's all of it. I think as long as you see progress then there can be no complaints. Hopefully over a period of time he can made inroads with regards improving the whole club, at the same time we know our constraints. The problem was over the last year we were making the same mistakes over and over. We were losing consistently to teams we are far bigger than, and teams who are working on a budget far smaller than ours. It's a ruthless world as we know, and it's all about tomorrow. At the same time though it wasn't long ago the Liverpool fans were happy with him, and the games I seen they were brilliant. Also off the top of my head he definitely improved Henderson, Sterling, Suarez and Sturridge. I think he'll be a far better manager for his experience with you. I tell you one thing, if Klopp, or you signing committee buy the wrong players over the summer, and Liverpool are in the bottom half of the table mid season you'll be wanting rid of him. A year ago Mourinho, Martinez and Rodgers could do no wrong, they all signed new contracts, all of a sudden they are imposters. If you had won the league Brendan Rodgers could have went for a sunbed 3 times a day if he wanted! It always has been and always will be a case of - the King is dead, long live the King.

Obviously you've never got the right to just win things it's got to be earned but for me we should be winning the league and one domestic cup. For Europe I would take group stages of champions league, I feel the last 16 should be a possibility considering teams with smaller budgets from similar/ smaller sized leagues do it. For the Europa league then last 16 should be a realistic aim although I hate all the Sunday games.

Europe is a must he has to qualify for the cl cups are nice but the boards priority is the cl group stages.

Winning the league is essential. Making progress in Europe has to be done after recent disappointments. The financial rewards are what the board wants hopefully to help strengthen the team. Winning one of the domestic cup isn't too much to ask for either!

We operate on first or last basis, which may be difficult to grasp for a team who see fourth as a huge achievement.

You may be better asking an Aberdeen fan's thoughts - way more in common.

Winning the league is always the priority as it proves you are the best in the country - even if the opposition is poor, as is the case in many smaller countries.
It also ensures European football in some shape or form and although we have had mixed fortunes in the fifty-odd years I have followed Celtic, we have had some great and some not-so-great nights in a packed, rocking Celtic Park.
We are usually seen as punching above our weight if and when we manage to get into the CL groups but the expectation and belief - as you will know - is always there.

Obviously we are at a huge financial disadvantage to other teams in stronger, richer leagues, where teams are either bank-rolled by enormous TV dividends or sugar-daddies, but that has always made any progress or success in any European competition all the sweeter an achievement.

Domestic cups are always a nice bonus although the league cup can be a testing ground for fringe/ youth, like In any other country and the Scottish Cup is more 'glamorous' Our record in recent seasons has not been as good as expected - although we still hold the record - and a mix of poor performances and other circumstances have seen a couple of managers come and go in six years as we try to get back to a standard/ quality expected by the masses.

Not sure why you seem to have taken offense here "thepoeticpatient". Is it because I said weaker league because surely that's a fair comment? Personally, I don't see fourth place as "a huge achievement" although there are fans that do unfortunately.
We last won a trophy in 2012. Since the we've finished runners up in the league, league cup, fa cup and now the Europa League. That's not good enough! "If you are first you are first. If you are second, you are nothing. "
The Celtic I watched under O'Neill is a class apart from the current crop. You've won 7 trophies in 5 years, including 5 leagues, which have come easily. I don't think that's good enough. Celtic Park is as magical as any. Hopefully, Rodgers can bring the memorable champions league nights he couldn't manage with us!
