Centre backs unlikely to be brought in until summer.

If that’s true kev I’m very disappointed. Benkovic will almost certainly go back to Leicester in the summer. It looks like boyata is being allowed to run his contract down. when both are fit they are Brendan’s preferred pairing, outwith Ajer I don’t think brendan really rates the rest. Unless something is already in place for 1 or 2 CBs to come in in the summer I think it’s a big gamble as they European ties don’t half come around fast.

I think that will be very difficult to do that this month. To be brutally honest, if we were to bring in someone of the quality we require they would want to play. There are positions we’ll look at but that is one where a couple of our key players will move on and will need to be replaced.

“Obviously, we have young Kris Ajer and Jozo Simunovic already here. It’s an area of the team we will find it tough to strengthen in January but it’s a must to do that in the summer. -rogers.

BR said he’s looking to bring in quality at centre back and if he does that in this window he can’t guarantee them game time as he has Boyata and Benkovic with Ajer and Jozo as back up. That’s why we’ll wait to to summer but I’d imagine we’ll be speaking to player now with a view to finalising the deal in the summer.

I'm really perplexed to be reading that this morning. It's not a big gamble, it's a massive gamble! If he has identified target's for the summer, fair enough, but we desperately need at least one solid centre half in now, if only for the rest of the season. We are getting made to look really amateurish in the recent transfer dealings and I sincerely hope the hierarchy know what their doing.

Problem is that any quality CB wouldn't want to come now if they are not going to play for 6 months. There can be no excuse in the summer though as the search must surely start now.

Seen that too kev. Find that hard to believe. What s the thinking There? Surely after the old firm BR must have seen that area needs to be strengthen. Unless he is look at bitton as cover or a right back/ centre back. Time will tell 🤞.

Get some Bhoys out on Loan or rid first squad too big no way we should be looking to enhance midfield a right back should be main position to sort out Gamboa moved on either loan or out. Have Ralston and Lustig fight for position regardless of new RB.

If boyata doesn’t sign an extension which seems highly unlikely but not impossible then what message does that send to Ajer and jozo? It tells me that at the moment, Ajer, jozo and hendry are 3rd 4th and 5th choice. Going by that assumption if boyata leaves in the summer along with benkovic which I think most anticipate then whoever comes in will be looking to play straight away. I get to an extent why brendan will play boyata till the summer if no one in that position comes in this month but if I’m Ajer and jozo I’m thinking “ I’m not that well thought of when a guy that’s running his deal down, walking away for heehaw, is still playing before me”. If come the end of January and no new CB is brought in then I’d play Ajer ahead of boyata.

I don't get the thinking here. We can't sign a new centre back because he would want to play? Is that really our argument for not buying a player? The solution is simple - drop Boyata and play the new guy. I don't care how bloated the squad is we need at least one centre half in and embedded before the qualifiers next season. Madness.

Where the feck did you get £19.5 million for benkovic? He cost around 13 million.
The thinking has got to be that we have already got 5 CBs in the squad right now and can't accommodate more till some leave.
I am also thinking that maybe the ones he really wants might not be available now but will in the summer? (McKenna? )

Well Kev, if McKenna's the type of player we've been scouting, then there's not much to look forward to. Times are bleak.

Typical celtic never sorting out the real issue. Ed was there any news back in Kalas? Did his agent say he's not interested in a move North or just not intested in a move in Jan?

{Ed007's Note - I think it's more a move for the summer mate. I'll try and get a hold of Ed002 and see if there's anything new on it.}

I think u could be right kev with the thinking of maybe getting who he really wants in the summer but McKenna? I’m not convinced he’s any better than Ajer. Infact I’d say Ajer is a much better prospect than Mckenna. I’m with one of the other posts, if possible get as good a centre back as we can right now and drop boyata if he’s not staying. I’m not buying this “ any centre half we bring in right now would have to wait to play”. why? If boyata isn’t hanging around then he’s out for me.

I can’t fathom it really, we have money yet we get a couple of loans in, an unheard of player . With two weeks to go we still need a right back that we have needed for the last two seasons and a centre back. At the minute our biggest outlay has been to pay Peter his bonus. We have to plan ahead, all we hear is that moves were being set up long before the window opened. Boyata is not signing so replace him now and get them bedded in before the euro qualifiers . We had our fingers burnt this season and it’s cost us champions league money, have we not learnt anything? Go after melling from Rosenberg to cover the left side, the other Norwegian for right back, and a decent centre back. I appreciate we have a few stockpiled but what can we do, never sign anyone or improve due to previous bad buys or players that have lost a yard of pace . If we can’t get rid of players who’s to say it will happen in the summer. I know benkovic and Boyata go but we ha e had a long list of players for the last couple of seasons that needed to be moved on but are still here.

See this moaning about signing unknown player it needs to stop. We have signed loads of player that were unknown to the fans that turned out to be great players for us.

I agree Kev, but we have signed loads that have done nothing. He looks like he knows where the net is if he can step up to score for us that will be great. But that wasn’t the main point, the point being we have spent very little at the minute when everyone on here will agree we need a centre back, right back and maybe a left back to cover kt . we constantly hear this window is difficult, and we heard it in the summer as well. No window is easy for us as we can’t afford to blow teams out of the water like teams from the English league with their money, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be able to improve on our squad . It gives us very little time in the summer to get centre backs in, as we found out this year we can’t rely on Hendry, Jozo or Ajer to get us there.

18 Jan 2019 18:04:18
Harsh to say we can't rely on ajer imo.
We have also signed plenty players that were known to us that have flopped as well.

Cheers Ed that's positive if he wasnt totally put of by the idea.

I'm excited to see what Bayo can do going by his highlight reels we need a dominant striker in the air as no one really attacks the ball at corners apart from Benkovic. And I have to agree I'd much rather have Ajer playing than McKenna.

I don’t know why people keep trotting out this nonsense that we’ve signed loads of players and they’ve done nothing. Every player we sign is an addition to the squad. They fight for their place in the team and the ones who perform best will play. The others continue to work hard to push for a place. In most cases, if they don’t play, it’s because someone else has worked harder or has had the breaks. They will almost certainly have contributed to the development of the player who is keeping them out of the team. Results come about because of the collective effort of all the players, even the ones who don’t play. Some will be identified as having the wrong attitude and we’ll try and move them on but I’d say the vast majority of our players will be making a positive contribution and there will be a good few that are developing and may break through into the first team in the near future. BR will know who they are because he watches them train every day. We only see the performances of the ones who actually play so we are in no position to make any judgements about their contributions. (Unless you’ve got a drone)
