Was watching a video of celtic goals against rangers. Good memories! Have been following now for 45 years. Formations and tactics have changed a lot. If we were to slot players into current formation who would you pick? My team is as follows;

Forster

Lustig Van Dijk Wanyama Izziguire

Brown Petrov

Commons Nakamura Moravcik

Larsson

Haven't seen an overload of good left backs so emelio for me - he has had some great games although not fulfilled his initial potential. Sutton and Hartson don't fit with current formation but in another era would be starts. Bit light in bottom of attacking diamond but would be great on offensive; those three would all interchange! Wanyama is too good to leave out and was a great centre back as well. Have probably left out someone obvious but please correct me! Surprising for me is that I have 4 players from current team! And nearly more if we consider recent departures.

For a start u have Larsson in the team obviously. 1 word from him and you would have to change the formation. He wudnt want to play lone striker role and would be a total waste of his talents.
You cudnt have Naka Commons and Lubo as attacking 3. No legs there despite great talent.
Kinda makes a mockery of our system as we don't have the players to play it currently and this team defo hasn't.
Will keep saying it till I green in the face lol, u don't play a system and fit square pegs in round holes. You play a system that suits the players u have.
Imagine having Sutton/Hartson the now, they prob wudnt get a game. Crazy eh.

Ryman never thought of looking at it like that but you are correct. RD has tried to get the team super fit in order to make his system as effective as possible. I feel he is willing to sacrifice flair such as Commons because he wants total fitness so players can press and press. I agree with you that we don't have the players to play the system not just in terms of fitness but they are not good enough to play different positions. They are a limited squad in terms of ability and we take no account of that so we don't get the best of them. Commons will never score 30 goals playing this system. His lack of goals are a massive loss.

Yes Johnny KC will never score as many playing like this. You also take away 20 goals now that VVD and Denayer are gone, you can see why we struggle to score sometimes. Why put goal scorers either in wrong position or not playing it just doesn't make sense.

And does it also mean Messi, Totti, Zlatan, and Balotelli wudt get a game for us. because they don't go chasing shadows.

I think the Deila experiment was a good idea. We have to try different approaches. I gave him time but sadly it hasn't worked out. No effective pressing game - only giving fouls away. Poorest attack I have seen for many years. He said give him a year. I subscribed to that so judge him by his own words - sorry mate - you haven't done it. No progression since Lennon.This isn't going anywhere. A new coach would have all season to get his methods across and prepare us for next years champions league. Football is a ruthless business and although Ronny is a nice guy he must be replaced now. Its not so bad losing to Aberdeen but losing in this manner is not acceptable for Celtic. Long time fan - 45 years following the hoops. YNWA.

Deila has potential as a coach and shows good signs domestically. In Europe he is an amateur tho. I think that in a few years he will suss out how to play in Europe but we don't have that time. Perhaps Celtic should employ a more experienced coach for the European campaigns with Ronny as understudy until he learns his trade. I think Ronny will someday be a great all-round coach but Celtic can't afford to wait for that and I don't think we should lose him. He definitely needs a mentor at European level tho as its clear he's out of his depth there just now.
