Had a look at the player list from Malmö vs Salzburg and compared them to when celtic played Salzburg and there were only 4 or 5 players from that team playing against Malmö and this didn't include the Brazilian Alan and Soriano, so Salzburg don't look anywhere near as strong as they were last year, so let's hope the result flattered Malmö

Pat , it looked very much as if all three goals were nearly presented to Malmo.
If we do our job , and I am confident that we will we should go through .

Malmo are not doing well domestically. They are 6th after 18 games. i'm confident we will go through

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Aug 2015 08:48:46
DN there's not many points between those top six mind bud. But yeah, I'm confident too. We can be beating any side in that draw over two legs. I must have worked it out wrong from the start. I was always confident about the first two rounds, but I was a bit iffy about the third but that's because I thought we could get an unseeded league route side! At this stage I wouldn't have fancied us against a Lazio or CSKA etc. can't see it, but I almost pray we sign one or two proven players if we get there proper.

Salzburgs ST Alan has moved to China for the mega bucks an I think Soriano has had a bad injury. They have also sold that lad with the blond hair to Dortmund after the played us and really they were the best 3 player in the Salzburg team

The fact that Malmø is not doing that good domesticly worries me. It's so typical for scandinavian teams to do better in Europe when doing bad in the league.
That being said, I think you guys will make it anyhow.

Boys we have discussed the RD revolution here many times. We are a year on. He had his style that all ayers now try and play. I for one have never bought into this style of play or the "dominating teams in Europe talk". I can't see how we beat Malmo. They are not a European powerhouse but Celtic neither are Celtic. We can't score goals. I give us very little chance of qualifying. You can back RD all you want and I am sure that if we don't qualify many posters will have many excuses as to why we didn't make it and I just can't see us making it so start your excuses now.

Evening Ed hope you are well?
First off I think our Champions league Draw is by far the hardest game we could of got! Forget Berget the players to watch are Oscar Lewicki he was the best Swedish player in the under 21s team which just won the Euros Bayern Munich signed this player when he was in his teens a great central midfielder and his partner in there Simon Kroor another Swedish under 21 he likes to get forward more Brown and Biton will have there hands full with these two! They have quality all through the team! There attacking midfielder Guilermo Molins is a great player with a lot of European Experience. I am worried about this one I must say! I feel we still need a good playmaking midfielder who can find a pass from Nowhere I think we she look to get Agim Ibraimi from Maribor he was great against us last season in the number 10 roll we also need a left back why not Ludwig Augustinsson from Copenhagen another who was great for Sweden in the under 21s as for the Striker I got told today the big name striker we have been linked with is Jonathan Soriano could be a load of crap a lad that comes to my Gym comes from Glasgow and has just returned from a week down at his folks said everyone was saying now Salzburg are out of Europe Celtic will make there move! At 29 I am not sure if he is the long term answer but a cracking player all the same I did a wee bit of digging on him and he hasn't played one game this season for Salzburg! Do you know if he is injured Ed? or is he trying to get a move away? Salzburg have been rotten this Season so far they are 3 games in and only have 1 point in the league which would give Scotland a run for being the poorest in Europe!

Believable4 Unbelievable1

08 Aug 2015 22:46:06
Ibrahimi would be a great signing as he looked great against us and can play on both wings as well as number 10, wouldn't cost a lot as well, Soriano would be a quality signing and would add a god but of experience to the team, not to worried about his age as we signed a certain Lubo at 34

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Aug 2015 03:45:05
Pat, realise it's a typo (or auto correct) but I do like the idea of having a 'God' bit of experience to the team.

Watching final score on my phone big Sutton Is on it and we're talking about man United needing a centre half says a lot of talk about stones to Chelsea or man United and he says going to put it out there guy north of the border vvd 7 million getting quoted Sutton says is a shocking evaluation and he's a better player than John stones

Believable5 Unbelievable1

08 Aug 2015 15:34:01
Hard to judge but defensively, Stones looks a better prospect. Virgil is a rare centre back though. You don't get many more technically gifted than him. He's a luxury in ways. Yes Stones has played a run in the BPL but there is no way Virgil is only worth 7m if Stones is worth 30m.

Agree0 Disagree1

08 Aug 2015 15:40:32
he said it on wed during the game as well , said if stones is valued at 25 million that's what we should be asking for vvd ,about time ex celtic men spoke out like this

Agree4 Disagree1

08 Aug 2015 21:02:50
The reason the English players go for so much is because of the quota that all Premier League clubs need to have. VVD ain't English so he has no premium. Don't matter if he is better or not. We might get £9 mill and a sell on but we will do well to get a significant amount over that.

Agree1 Disagree1

09 Aug 2015 00:38:50
Part of the reason , Cceltic players are sold at a fraction of the prices EPL players go for is that if Celtic look for example £20 m the interested club ask Celtic what wages is the player on . The buying club say that wage represents £5 m . So Celtic have to fight to get £7/8£10 +million no matter how good we think our player is.

Agree0 Disagree1

09 Aug 2015 15:03:47
Naw it duzny. It always goes on what people are willing to pay. If you get a young untried player your bit going to offer him big wages, unless your mental. Whits the point in trying to unearth gems if you can afford to pay that money? If your scouting us good?

It has all to do with how he is as a player and how much they are willing to spend.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Aug 2015 21:06:53
Clubs who unearth gems pay very small wages compared to more experienced players. Either it is already in the initial contract or else a new contract is agreed to arrange for a higher wage to reflect the performance on the field .
You will recall Big Victor refused a new contract , as the new contract with higher wages would have allowed Celtic to seek a higher price for him .

Quick fun question guys.
If we could have signed 1 player we missed out on or were heavily linked with who would it have been? (Obv within reasonable budget constraints.)
My Choice is Kinkladze.

Actually Berbatov too. Or slightly different but Given. We would have won the UEFA cup with Given at the time.

Agree0 Disagree1

08 Aug 2015 20:58:30
I remember O'Neil tried to sign Hleb from Stuttgart and Kompany from Anderlecht.

Also remember we tried to sign Rivaldo but wanted him to come on trial first, which he refused to do.

So between these 3 and Ginola for me

08 Aug 2015 21:33:34
Alan shearer without a doubt

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2015 22:15:54
I remember the kompany rumours would have been a great signing but doubt he'd have stayed more than 2 years. I agree wish we'd kept given could imagine him being with us his entire career if we'd kept him for a bit longer

08 Aug 2015 22:33:30
I forgot about Riquelme and Saviola. What players they were.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2015 22:53:22
So many, many old board nonsense, some towards end of careers, mostly never going to happen but shows years back we could talk about signing some of the best around, eg Paul McGrath, Ronnie Whelan, Bratseth, Dragan Stoykovich.
Kompany would have been awesome and also Given

paul gascoigne when he was at newcastle.

Rayman, I remember us watching him at Lech Poznan but no real surprise he went to Dortmund. For £4m too. Big IF but if they hadn't of been interested.

Can't believe I forgot Shearer. Legend. We were better with Larsson though. Had no idea about Ginola either. Both would be in a dream XI of players i've seen live.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Aug 2015 11:18:11
I remember rumours about Paul Ince, Patrick Berger and Michael Owen as well, but the best might have been a link with Alfredo De Stefano in the late 60's?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I remember Paddy was close to moving to Celtic at one point. Berger I mean. Trouble was he was never keen on the move to Scotland. Probably lucky for me mam as she would have had to watch Scottish footie to get her fix of him, as she was a bit obsessed with him. He was some player him, best I have ever played against, though it was only a kickabout at Melwood, his touch was sublime. You would have loved him at Celtic.}

08 Aug 2015 14:21:16
Right, Europe and insignificant investment aside for a post - tomorrows game.

What changes, if any, would people want to see?

I ask this because

a) I think a lot of the 'first team' could do with a rest.

b) With no disrespect to our domestic opponents, we are in a position, unlike say, Malmo, where we have a bit of lee way in RDs second season to give youngsters a chance to showcase.

So my team:

Bailly

Janko
Virgil
Boyata
Tierney

Brown
Henderson

GMS
Rogic
Armstrong

Griffiths

Gordon has done well so far this season and changing a keeper may be viewed as more detrimental than most positions but I'd just like to see a bit of Bailly. I'd like to think he can genuinely challenge for No.1. Was immense in Germany.

Janko and Tierney quite simply to replace full backs but keep Virgil and Boyata together to develop their understanding further.

Hope Henderson gets a run out. Could partner Bitton or Brown to be fair. Just put Brown in as I think he's fitter than Bitton.

Rogic is a player that I was really looking forward to and I've put him with the young GMS and SA. But Commons could easily come in and do a job.

Griffiths. Only real option.

Too many changes? Perhaps even in defeat it would be worth the time?

Agree0 Disagree1

08 Aug 2015 19:49:27
JT. the only one exception I would make is Gordon, Its all very well getting a rest however for keepers its a different story, they need to be match sahrp.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2015 21:20:33
I would be happy with that team Jim as I would like to see some guys rested for Malmo and some of our youth and fringe given a chance to prove themselves.

Finally, I would like to add that we can't keep signing players if we want to see the young players developed.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2015 21:42:39
Commons infront of rogic for me but not a bad shout the rest

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2015 22:38:49
Wouldn't mind seeing some youngsters given a chance, but geez a break with the players getting rested. It's August

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Aug 2015 09:34:19
Would love to see this sort of rotation but don't think as many as that will happen, RD has been good at giving youth more chance however he said last season he wouldn't change too much after the poor start we had. RabMac spot on we can't keep signing players and give youth a chance.
I understand comments from supporters wanting a couple more and better quality however I'm just happy we have a guy in charge wanting to develop youth in a way we should have done 3/5/10/20 years ago (take your pick).

I agree mate! Load of crap! So we fill out paradise for the Malmo game! The if we get through it will be we didn't have enough time left in the window to sign anyone! It's a script we've heard so many times!

Dh88 last season after Maribor game, only reason Scepovic was signed was to appease fans who protested outside after game.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2015 15:26:38
The away games on 25th the Tuesday, window shuts on the Sunday nite.if they do there jobs right that's plenty of time to bring 1 or 2 in! But it won't happen! Dn30 it's the same all the time bud! Scepovic was a panic buy without a doubt! And once it looked like he'd left us hanging they went for guidetti! Another panic! I hope I'm on here on the 1st of September and I'm eating my words because we've signed a couple of quality players! Sum how I don't think I will be but!

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2015 21:27:14
I'm glad we did not sign him as I don't think he is any better than what we already have.

As much as I would love us to sign a striker of note, I would be equally glad to see some Donnelly and/or Miller given a chance this season.

Agree0 Disagree1

08 Aug 2015 08:27:52
Have used the site for months now and have just registered, have enjoyed reading all the various posts, I like everyone else still feel we would benefit from more creativity in the midfield( and other areas as well) I see the winger from Maribor ibiahimi is still available and wouldn't cost a lot, he wasn't your typical winger and worked his defensive duties very well, if we are going to play only one up front we should be looking to add this type of player out wide as biton, brown and Johansen are all good players but lacking in this department

Believable4 Unbelievable1

08 Aug 2015 08:56:47
Hi Pat. Think most posters would agree with you. The question is do we have enough creativity to get past Malmo? I can't see that they have any better players than we do? How can Berget not get a game for us yet play most weeks for them? So we are not talking about playing against an Arsenal or PSG who have mega bucks players. So there can be no excuses for not going through. So all the talk of budgets and wages are out the window here. No excuses. RD tells us we are in a far better place than last year. He has had time to get his ideas over to a settled squad so IMO this game measures exactly how far the RD reign has taken us forward. I also think Malmo are a better side than Maribor and they score goals, something that is lacking at Celtic Park.

Agree2 Disagree1

08 Aug 2015 11:07:41
Funnily enough Berget does not just play "most games" according to the paper he is thier TOP SCORER this season! So I agree we have a better standard of player I think it will come down to wether we play the way we are capable of as they will be coming towards the end of thier season and be at the top of thier game. Did anyone see the game against Salzberg? Was wondering if Malmo were extremly good to overturn 2 goal deficit. or if it was a differnet Salzberg to the one we played last season? One thing I would say is that we are certainly a different team to the one who faced Salzberg last season!

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2015 15:03:16
Check the Salzburg line up against U.S. and Malmo - most have either gone or are injured

Malmo will be a home and away win , wouldn't rest any players , get fluidity in our performance and have our team ready for the games

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Aug 2015 21:17:09
Good point Jonny do you think Ronnie is truly happy with the squad, or is he realising that signing more players that he wants is out with his budget, personally I think there is still more comings and goings from celtic park, I hope Ronnie takes more of a chance at celtic park and plays with two attsckers and this will hopefully give us more chances, if commons plays that wil giv us more creativity and hopefully win a by a few goals

Hi Ed and all

Not posted in over a year for various reasons that I won't bore folk with. Ed hope you are doing better buddy.

I just wanted to say I am pretty astounded at the level of negativity just now, we have played 5 competitive games this season to date - won 4 drawn 1 scored 9 conceded 1.

We should be very happy to be in this position.

Looking forward to the Malmo games quietly confident, a lot more than in previous years of qualifiers.

Yes we need strengthening but there is not a team in Britain or Europe that doesn't.

C'mon guys let's get behind the hoops, I am now 5000 miles from Celtic park but as buzzing as ever about the new season.

Moved from Dubai to Houston. Think the company are trying to get me further from Parkhead!!

Glad to hear you are good.

Anything further on this rumour of a striker? Cheers

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - It's alright for some!! (sun) You didn't leave Dubai because a couple of rowdy Scousers turned up all bubble-perms and knocked off DVD players did you?
I've not got a clue who the striker Radio Snyde are on about, player like Kramer and Sergio Araujo have all been mentioned before.}

08 Aug 2015 02:46:23
Celtstu nobody is complaining about the results, its the striker issue that is main concern. Are people automatically "negative" now because they are questioning signing Cifti, a player who is not as good as Griffiths?

08 Aug 2015 03:11:02
Haha thanks Ed, too many deluded Sevconians in Dubai, now I get to detest the Texas Rangers.

Keep calm and we can all judge once the window closes. Even if we signed another striker now there is no guarantee he would settle before the Malmo games or that he would score goals right away.

I am reasonably happy with the strikers we do have and realise it can take players a while to get back up to speed in the new season.

Ciftci is not yet at the fitness level he needs to be to play the role and for that reason I would start Griffiths at Parkhead when we play Malmo. If you cast your minds back to last season, it took our players about 6 months to get the required fitness levels, so we need to give him time to bed in.
