looking at yesterdays poll about transfers, I hope we don't bring in some second rate cheap or free players as the young bhoys on tour look
Cheap or free I can live with. Second rate though hopefully not. Which 37% are happy with our transfer business?!?
I am one of the 37%, I am happy with the tranfer policy, so far, I want to give the young players a chance to break through, they would win the spl, I think, Europe would be a learning curve, next year celtic could reep the benefits, there are too many fair weather tic supporters at the moment, they want success and they want it now, and the more money spent on a transfer the better.
Well said aindoh
Bringing in Gordon and probably losing Sammy, not pleasing in my eyes. Still early though.
Aindoh, I'm all for giving youth a chance too, within measure.
And I do want success now, forgive me, a club our size should have relative success. At least a double domestically and making real in roads in Europe, not stepping sideways or backwards. But it's always future this, future that isn't it?
And you do tend to get what you pay for with players, let's not beat around the bush there. Not every player we sign for peanuts will be great, JP isn't that good, if he was, like players, he'd probably be somewhere else by now.
It really must be me missing the point in signing young players for cheap, only for the few that do leave for huge profits, a slim percentage of that profit is reinvested into the side. At least we're selling a few good players now though rather than just see them wind down contracts which used to be the case. These millions we get for these players though, should we not be upping the bracket of player we bring in to the few million sort of mark? Otherwise, the team suffers for the sake of the pockets of money men. Our money doesn't go into the side we love to watch, but the pockets of others. But the boards lack of ambition has poisoned the minds of a lot of fans now I think.
We have it too easy in Scotland and that suits the Board, as they can sell our top players and replace them with Baldes, Mouyokolos and Boerigters without spending large amounts and the league title is virtually assured.
The quality of player even compared to WGS team is night and day, never mind the team that played in Seville in 2003, when we had 'Galacticos'.
We have been able to lower the standard of player in a one horse league however we are far from dominant in Scottish football trophies and our most recent CL campaign was a wake-up call at the very least.
Ronny is still unproven and is taking his time to assess what is required, but I would imagine his transfer funds are as limited as the boards ambition.
Qualifying for the CL group seems to be the ultimate these days and that's a far cry from the Celtic I love and the cost of watching/supporting does not reflect the value on display.

Just as a matter of interest how much money have we put into the pockets of others in each of the last two years .
I have no idea and I would like to know from someone who obviously does know.

@junglejim you say the signings are night and day from the Strachan era, can you tell me these great signings and furthermore did we make a profit on any of these guys.
Am I that "someone" 'whoseman'? ;)
Well I'm no financial expert but, generalised figures 12/13 season we received £8.5m for transfers and spent £3.9m. Season gone received circa £20.5m, spent £13.6m. So the money, as promised by the likes of Lawwell, Reid, Bankier, isn't going back into the side. That's without considering our other profits, sponsors, CL money etc. And there's some big earners gone. I go back to my point about the product on the pitch, and our declining levels of success are there in black and white.
@JimTim you don't need to be a financial expert to realise our income has drastically reduced in last few years due to lack of competition. Wud you rather we just spent anyway no matter what?Without the garauntee of CL football we cannot afford to spend too much we have to make money on transfers to keep ourselves ahead of the game. A recent old foe of ours did what your suggestin, I wonder what happened them?
{Ed007's Note - Yet the club accounts show that income has not been reduced at all let alone drastically, the only real negative in the club's revenue was the £100 discount on STs. The figures up to 31December 2013 show our profit before tax for the half year was £21.3m, an increase of over 40% on the same period the previous year. Rangers spent money they didn't have.}
Fair point ed, but how did we get those profits?
{Ed007's Note - It doesn't matter how we got them, why should it? We got them fair and square and that's all that matters. You said 'our income has drastically reduced in last few years due to lack of competition' yet the club's accounts show something completely different.
That's just the usual speel wrongly threw out by people looking to make excuses for the board's lack of serious investment in improving the quality of the playing staff, it goes hand in hand with the 'we don't want to end up like Rangers' garbage, which you finished with, how can that happen if we only spend the money we have?
Other teams in Europe consistently do better than us with nowhere near our income. If we can start allowing young players to progress we can be more selective about how we spend our money, taking into account the total outlay on Pukki, Balde and Griffiths we could/should have Watt and Atajic and spent the money on 1 player in the £4/5 million, £25-30k a week bracket - and we'd still have had change!}
What have Rangers got to do with it? Say they do actually die, what then? Just not bother at all with our own progression?
Ed you always talk with hindsight, what if we did what you say and bought a finboggasson for eg and it didn't work out you would be here slaughterin the board for wastin money.Let them do their job they are there for a reason they are better at it that you and I.
{Ed007's Note - What if it did work out though? You're the one who claimed our income has been drastically reduced, you can't think that highly of the board either. I'd say part of their job is to maximise income, although you'll probably disagree with that as well.}
I was talking about our natural/garunteed income. Its obv been transfer money/CL money that has boosted the profits. There is no garauntee that can continue in the same vain.In my opinion the board are stockpiling money for if/when the challenge comes.
{Ed007's Note - You accuse me of using hindsight whilst you're happy to predict the future - we might all be dead this time next year.
Profit is profit and the club basking in the glory of making the profit only highlights their unwillingness to spend it strengthening the team, what if the challenge never comes, do we keep selling our best players and replacing them with inferior ones and acting like a small club who should be grateful just to reach the group stages of the CL. The sad part is fans accepting the board running things with a small club mentality and showing no ambition. Just because you've accepted mediocrity does'nt mean everyone else has to, some of us still see CFC as a big club.}
