Jonathan Soriano?

How realistic a signing target is this for us? He's a great striker who scores roughly 30 goals a season in the Austrian league and has done consistently over the last 4-5 seasons. He'll be 31 in September so he's still got a few years left in him and he's only got 1 year left on his contract with Salzburg, he's very clinical and great at Free Kicks and surely if he's been happy enough to play in empty stadiums in Salzburg he would love to come to a full house at Celtic Park and potentially CL football?

We've pushed the boat out for a manager and it's time we did that with a striker as well imo one of the most important positions on the pitch, guys like Will Grigg just don't inspire me. So is there any chance of this signing potentially happening?

celticforever

1.) 27 May 2016 11:38:47
We say this every season. Then we don't sign him. Then he scores 30-odd goals. Then it happens all over again the next season lol.

2.) 27 May 2016 12:41:00
Every year there are the same players mentioned, soriano, Finnbogason (the phantom Celtic fan, Aron Johansson. now we've 'pushed the boat out' I'm sure we're a certainty to sign all the players ever mentioned!

Anyone know what's happened to Bitton? Not even making the bench recently and seen pics of him training the other day so don't think he's injured.

1.) 06 Mar 2016 17:10:45
So no answers lhads? Cheers.

2.) 06 Mar 2016 17:37:55
I heard him and Ronnie aren't talking don't know if there is any truth in it though.

3.) 06 Mar 2016 21:03:51
He's injured.

4.) 07 Mar 2016 07:10:00
Think biton and johansen had a fight in training. So the rumour is.

5.) 07 Mar 2016 09:16:21
His agent said he had a small injury and will be back next week

6.) 07 Mar 2016 21:19:33
He's been injured since the ICT game now back in training.

{Ed007's Note - Janko also played 45 mins for the Development Squad tonight in their 2-2 with St Mirren.}

13 Dec 2015 02:55:58
Supposedly Adel Taarabt is the Benfica player linked with us heard anything ED? If we could somehow manage to get Adel Taarabt, Kevin Großkreutz and Libor Kozak that would be some January transfer window attacking wise.

No chance right enough.

celticforever

{Ed007's Note - Taarabt wouldn't get near RD's team, he's a lazy arrogant twat with an attitude that would stink up Glasgow. His team mates at QPR were fined if they passed to him in their own half.}

1.) 13 Dec 2015 20:58:48
The Celtic scout at every Benfica home game for the last decade has to be biggest mystery known to man! How can they be scouting Taarabt CelticForever? - He hasn't played for them! And as Ed has touched on - if you were to pick 1 player in world football that doesn't suit the way Ronny wants us to play its him. He's technically brilliant, the goal he scored for QPR with the outside of his right foot into the bottom corner was world class but he doesn't put in the work. Managers at every club say the same thing! If he had the desire of Ronaldo he'd be some player. The only player from Benfica that would seem realistic is their left back Eliseu, that would make sense - another full back good going forward but can't defend. He's 32 and has only played about 15 games a season for them. The other possibilities hardly play either so to be at every game is bizarre. I think we should be scouting the lower level teams in Germany, Italy, France, Spain where you can still get a cracking player for £3/4 million. Cabaye cost around £3 million a few years ago, before he was a household name! Switzerland is another league we should be scouting - I said this years ago when we were struggling against so called Swiss teams. There's Sion through as well in Liverpools group!

2.) 14 Dec 2015 02:20:51
Delphic I was only passing on what I read on an online article I didn't say personally that we were signing him or even scouting him. I know it's prob made up rubbish but was just asking the question.

11 Nov 2015 01:56:03
Eff me backwards just read Johansen is in talks about a new four year deal.

Wtf is Ronny and the board playing at here? First choice CM pairing when fit will always be Brown and Bitton and CAM should be going to Rogic who's playing very well there and we've still to try the likes of Allan in there as well.

I'll be both gutted and raging if Johansen gets a new contract I'm getting fed up with him in a Celtic shirt and feel it's best he moves on January if possible.

On a side note read on another Celtic forum Armstrong agent apparantly has suggested that Armstrong is unhappy about being played out of the position and let this be known to Lawwell who was to inform Ronny about it. Don't know what to make of it could of course be rubbish.

celticforever

1.) 11 Nov 2015 12:11:07
Are you forgetting he was our best player last year I agree this year he has been far from that he is supposed to be carrying a back injury but I still think he is worth a new contract.

2.) 11 Nov 2015 17:49:52
Don't think that sounds right, Armstrong is big enough to go and chap on Ronnies door himself.

3.) 11 Nov 2015 19:41:04
I'm sure youd be raging on here if he hit form again and we lost him on a free.

4.) 12 Nov 2015 00:08:10
Got agree no way should johanssen get a new crontact he has bn the worst player all season to wastful with the ball give scott allan a chance in there.

5.) 12 Nov 2015 00:59:51
Just like many other forums we have a terrible habit in going to the extremes when describing a players form . We were al happy with johansen's form last season he played really well. This season he is carrying a knock but he is still getting around the pitch and in last Thursday's game against he played a fantastic ball through to Griffiths, some pass for a player completely out of form .

6.) 12 Nov 2015 16:05:18
Just another shocking appraisal.

7.) 12 Nov 2015 21:34:03
We need to build a squad of 15/18 young players all near enough equal and capable of playing in a number of positions . Johansson definitely falls into this category and his form last season as an attacking centre midfielder was better than anyone I have seen at Celtic. for many a season . I see no reason why he cannot attain the same high standard again .

14 Sep 2015 16:32:33
Ed, do you know anything about the rumours that 4 senior players are having a meeting with Lawwell at Celtic Park today?

Hearing Commons, Brown and Mulgrew are 3 of the 4 with possibly Stokes being the other but nothing confirmed.

Well you were spot on all along Ed 007 about Craig Gordon, he's garbage.

celticforever

{Ed007's Note - I'd have much preferred to be proven wrong mate.}

1.) 07 Aug 2016 00:12:57
At best Gordon is quite good shot stopper . Once he leaves his line God knows anything can and does happen . His decision to go out and head the ball on Wednesday put us under pressure for 30 mins . It was unbelievable.

2.) 07 Aug 2016 00:21:39
Celticforever, Ed, I fear you are both right. Craig Gordon was a top class keeper, however since his injury he has lacked the authority and dominance he once possessed. I am glad he signed for us simply because I think he deserved another opportunity at the top level and the fact that we give few chances away has helped him and has prolonged his career. However sentiment aside if we are to progress, in Europe especially, we need to improve in all departments and GK is not exempt.

3.) 07 Aug 2016 00:22:00
All the rumours of a new keeper, have you heard anything ed? Guessing it would be early Christmas present for you if we replaced Gordon. Fair play you did say it from day one but you've definitely got more support on the matter over the last season.

{Ed007's Note - I heard that today mate but I don't know anything about it, sorry. I'll try and find out tommorow, well today now.7

4.) 07 Aug 2016 01:58:29
Fraser Forster was not good coming of is line either and he was a brute bring back the holy goalie.

5.) 07 Aug 2016 02:53:19
I'd take Forster over any keeper we've had in my 27 years. Like I said at the time, Gordon was a sub-standard replacement to FF. About time we looked for a different option.

{Ed007's Note - What really annoyed me was that after the money we got for Forster we forced Gordon on a new manager, what would we have done if he had broke down in the October? He didn't and I know it's all what ifs but surely Rocky and Bullwinkle could see how big a risk they were taking.
Even though he's made major blunders he gets the sympathy vote from fans and Efe's mistakes take the heat off him Lawwell and Park have been very, very lucky with the Gordon gamble, and fair play to him for staying fit, I hope he keeps playing for years, just not for Celtic.}

6.) 07 Aug 2016 08:54:34
Ad have forster over boruc everytime.

7.) 07 Aug 2016 04:21:09
He was just never a suitable replacement. Simple as. Fitness aside. You're spot on with the 'sympathy vote' line.

8.) 07 Aug 2016 11:05:54
He isn't garbage . but he is the efe ambrose of keepers . when at hearts you knew at some point he would do something stupid rash or ineexplainable that could win us the game.

9.) 07 Aug 2016 12:41:38
Efe gets a hard time compared to Gordon. Surely CG has cost us more?

28 May 2016 11:59:39
What formation and team would you play every week currently from the players we have got atm? So including no new potential signings what would be your team? I'm going to use the 4-3-3 formation since I've read Rodgers favours that system.

--------------Gordon--------------

--Janko---Lustig---Erik---Tierney--

---------------Bitton-------------

------McGregor---------Rogic-----

---Roberts--------------Forrest---

--------------Griffiths----------

For me that team needs a new GK (Michel Vorm) , a new RB potentially, a new RCM maybe, a new LW (Elyounoussi) and a new striker (Jonathan Soriano) and we'll be good to go.

Bench: Bailly, Christie, Allan, Commons, Simunovic, Izaguirre, CKR, Henderson.

celticforever

1.) 28 May 2016 13:59:35
Celtic forever I ain't feeling it bud here is my thoughts with no new signings.
needs to be a 4/ 5/ 1 cause we only have 1 striker!
Gordon
Lustig sviatchenko simunovic tierney
Roberts johansson Armstrong brown rogic
Griffiths

Not much change from what Ronnie would have done with the players we have at the moment only due to having 1 striker I would change formation and lineup once we bring in new signings.

Hail hail.

2.) 28 May 2016 14:42:02
Another Allan sympathiser 🔫. God give me strenght.

3.) 28 May 2016 15:16:31
From what we have currently I'd say 4 2 3 1;
Keeper - Gordon (but I'd like to see him replaced with a new keeper or cash, boy is meant to be good)
Lb -kt
Rb - lustig (would like to see Fischer get a chance as he's looked good in what I've seen)
Centre half's - jozo n big Erik
Midfield 2- brown and johansen (with Ajer pushing for a start and bitton if he isn't sold although i'd like to see Armstrong and brown play together in the centre, they would be my 2 if sj is sold)
Forwards _ Roberts rogic and Henderson (would like elynouusi in for left of the 3)
Striker - Griff
As for commons (over hyped over weight and over paid for a guy who is very very average) and Forrest neither should play for us again, mulgrew if he was part of their clique I'd say the same about. Anyone who was instrumental in causing problems for Rd was working against Celtic and should never be allowed to represent our great club, complete un professionalism.

4.) 28 May 2016 15:52:37
with no new signings i'd love a 3-4-1-2.

5.) 28 May 2016 16:14:00
I know where you're coming from leaving Brown out as apart from having a very disappointing season, he is starting to miss too many games with injury.
Bitton is another player I would not miss as he tends to slow things down and loses possession far too much.
I don't think Commons will be around as his card has been marked, plus CKR and Allen will have to do a lot better to convince the new manager to consider them?
I see you left out GMS also and I think Christie and Henderson will put more pressure on him to up his game consistently or be left in the cold.

6.) 28 May 2016 16:55:32
I think talk about formation is irrelevant as I am sure Brendan Rodgers is likely to tweak his formation before games depending on opposition and during games depending on how the game is panning out .
Formation seems more important for football pundits to blather about than anything else . These people talk about formations to make themselves out to be very football knowledgeable.

7.) 28 May 2016 17:46:32
KT is a excellent player. And his best position is left back it will be interesting to see if Rodgers thinks he is good enough to play that position. As it scuppers The 3-5-2.

I like 3-5-2. I don't think he is a wing back but he is an old school defender in the mould of our best right back Daniel Fergus McGrain a hard type solid as you will get Martin O'Neill seen Scottish football for what it was. we don't need to defend as much win the midfield play two up front with two wide players.

Time will tell he is undoubtedly the best left sided player we have seen since Tommy Boyd good problem for Brendan Rodgers all the same you don't build a team around a left back or can you?

8.) 28 May 2016 19:01:31
Griffiths

Rogic Roberts

Johansen Brown

Tierney Janko
Mulgrew Sviatchenko Lustig

Gordon

I'd like to see something like that based on our current squad. Tierney and Janko providing the width with the outer CB's covering some of their space. Brown and Johansen closing down tirelessly and giving the ball to Roberts and Rogic to make something happen.

9.) 28 May 2016 19:02:01
Formations I'm not too fussed about as it is only where a player starts on the pitch which changes as soon as the game starts. Br will use various formations I'm sure but it's about getting the right players on the pitch and for me we should be more offensive with forwards galore and 433 4231 4132 etc etc whatever it is I would like to see our players being more mentally and positionally adept as players should know, and I'm sure, will be told the areas to play in regards certain aspects of the game, ie opposing team attacking us most players funnel back into a defensive set up, when we chase the ball down we need to do it in packs, like Barcelona, and when one goes the next follows. For me that's a very basic thing that while can be coached, any player should be clever enough to know where to be at any given time. Sadly too few do and we get the usual nonsense they're being played out of position etc, you adapt to positions and when you've played football all your life if you can't understand or work out where to be on the pitch, without being told, for me there's something wrong. It is a simple game complicated by many, as a starting base for me 4231 and you adapt as the game goes on. As for the talk of who we'd play or formations Celtic forever put it up for discussion based on what we have, which may change depending on who is brought in. Hail hail.

10.) 28 May 2016 19:21:12
Would have to be the old 4 4 2.

Gordon

Lustig
Jozo
Big Erick
Tierney

Roberts
Brown
McGregger
Christie

Griffiths
Stokes.

11.) 28 May 2016 21:14:21
With a diamond in the midfield brown at the bottom McGregger/ Rogic at the top.

09 May 2016 15:12:36
Right, team for St Johnstone time to give the lhads who haven't had much game time lately a go.

---------------Bailly---------------

--Janko--Ambrose---Blackett--Izzy---

---------Allan-----Johansen---------

--Forrest-----Commons-----Christie--

--------------Griffiths------------

Would like to see Ronny field this team, included Griffiths as he's looking to get his 40th. May as well give Blackett some game time rest Erik.

celticforever

1.) 09 May 2016 15:37:31
I like the idea of given the fringe lads a game now it's all wrapped up. But I don't think the old ticker could handle a Blackett and Ambrose centre back pairing 😂😂😂.

2.) 09 May 2016 15:41:40
Why should James Forrest be anywhere near the starting 11?

3.) 09 May 2016 16:01:16
Because Forrest whether folk like it or not is 10x the player of both Armstrong and GMS on the wings.

4.) 09 May 2016 16:18:32
Would rather see

Bailly

Mcart
Shevvy
Kellahar

Roberts
Mgregor
Christie
Allan
miller

Rogic

Griffs 3 5 2.

5.) 09 May 2016 16:36:43
I think a couple of fringe men playing is fine but remember fans are paying money to buy tickets and travel to Perth and I wouldn't be happy if they got beat playing a virtual full team of players lacking match sharpness. Yes they could play a 2nd string and still win but there's already been enough booing this season why risk more with 2 games left as no one can really come in and nail down a place in one match assuming it will be regular players playing on Sunday at home.

6.) 09 May 2016 16:41:04
at what point did I say Armstrong or GMS should be in that team?

7.) 09 May 2016 17:29:11
Since the original team was fringe players and you singled out Forrest not to play and didn't say who you would play other fringe players for that position would likely be gms or Armstrong and celtic forever clearly rates Forrest above those two in that position. I'm more bemused why you singled out Forrest who whilst not great has at least helped the club in some ways over the years yet your happy with Bailly janko Blackett Allan and Christie who have done nothing at Celtic in their time here, then there's Ambrose!

8.) 09 May 2016 17:42:47
Blackett is probably the worst player I've ever seen in the hoops. He makes Ambrose look like Maldini. Doesn't deserve another kick after his performance against Molde.

9.) 09 May 2016 18:21:59
Celticforever On the basis that u regard J Forrest to be 10x the winger GMS are you picking Commons because he is 10x the width of Rogic

Have I tapped into your Logic?

10.) 09 May 2016 18:12:39
Jim, Janko has been out injured most of the season, Christie was just signed in Jan, Bailly could be no worse than Gordon's been this season as for Blackett with Mulgrew being injured yet again it's between him, ambrose and boyata for CB hardly spoils for choice there, I'd play Roberts instead of Forrest.

11.) 09 May 2016 19:18:30
It maybe a meaningless game on Wednesday but I still wouldn't let Ambrose anywhere near the starting eleven.
After yesterdays performance I would feel safer with Patrick Roberts playing at Centre half.

12.) 09 May 2016 20:12:39
Weather Forrest 10 times the player or no the wee rat shouldn't be let anywhere near first team. What game has he actually done it on big stage like wee Maloney or Mcgeady. The Bhoy second rate.

13.) 09 May 2016 21:18:00
I would rather go for younger back- up players to play instead of some of the more experienced fringe players.

14.) 10 May 2016 00:37:37
I don't want to see Blackett Ambrose or Forrest in a celtic jersey again. But the squad should be rotated as it is not too long until the CL qualifiers the likely 11 should be rested now apart from Roberts and Griffiths to get his 40th.

Bailly
Janko Breslin Kelleher Izzy
Roberts Armstrong Allan Christie
CKR Miller/ Aitchison on as a sub.

02 May 2016 11:26:37
Looking ahead to next season we actually have a very decent squad and a few additions would make it even better, it's time to get ruthless with the team this Summer for me. These are three teams I have put together using all the players I'd like us to keep and where additions need to be made. I'd like to see us use a 4-1-3-2 formation next season domestically we'll be blowing teams away, would also make Lustig new captain. I've said New St because I believe we need to bring in two strikers good enough to score goals in Europe and high pressure games, I just don't feel the confidence I should have in Griffiths and CKR to do this but I'd still definitely keep them to be used domestically.

-------------Gordon------------

--Janko--Lustig (C) --Erik--Tierney-

-------------Bitton-------------

----Roberts--Commons--Forrest----

--------New St---New St----------

--------------Bailly-------------

-Fisher--Jozo---Ambrose---Izzy--

--------------Ajer---------------

--McGregor---Rogic---Christie----

-------Griffiths---CKR-----------

--------------Fasan-----------

--Lustig---Jozo---Erik---Tierney-

------------Henderson-----------

--Forrest-----Allan----Nesbitt---

----New St-----Griffiths--------

So looking at those squads I think two new strikers are required, one CM, one LW and possibly another CB and new number 1 goalkeeper if Gordon keeps making the same mistakes. But all in all that's a pretty decent squad.

Surplus to requirements and players we should be actively trying to shift imo are.

Brown, Armstrong, GMS, Boyata, Johansen, Cole, Ciftci, Stokes, Scepovic, Duffy, Mulgrew, Blackett. Think of the wages we'd be saving shifting this lot?

A lot to be positive about next season if the new manager can get it right.

celticforever

1.) 02 May 2016 12:54:55
Nice to see you been positive celticforever lol. I agree with your post but I would imagine a few coming and goings and the formation depends on the manager but as ed mentioned in a earlier post formations don't really mean anything anymore apart from where they start a kick off.

2.) 02 May 2016 18:11:50
I reckon Armstrong should be given his chance in the DM position, may be a good option if not first pick?

3.) 02 May 2016 18:37:17
Celtic for ever . I missed your posts about getting rid of Brown for a whole week .
It must be terrible for you going about your business with a grudge against One of our top three players every season for at least 8 seasons . Why pick on Duffy ahead of O'Connell, Miller and the other development players.

21 Apr 2016 20:45:29
Ronny Deila has no one to blame but himself for me, sure, you can argue that he has not been backed properly in certain areas of the park, especially up front where as much as Griffiths has done well domestically this season he won't take us to the next level and score goals consistently against tougher opposition in Europe and in high pressure situations. One on ones wit the keeper he is very poor at also which has cost us at times like Ajax for example.

Anyway, for me Ronny has been far too faithful to constantly under-performing players and with this imo he has paid the price with his job. When fit these players have been played more often than not regardless of their poor form and in the end for me these players are the most culpable for the team under performing week after week under him.

These players for me are.

Scott Brown
Stefan Johansen
Gary Mackay Steven
Stuart Armstrong
Dedrick Boyata
Charlie Mulgrew

By sticking with these players every week, these utter imposters imo, Ronny has lost his job. People may say I'm being harsh on Mulgrew putting him amongst that lot but let's not forget his performances against Legia and Malmo which were despicable and atrocious under Deila and Europe is a huge blot on if not the biggest blot on Deila's time here.

I just hope for the next managers sake he doesn't have ANY of these players near his side or again he may suffer the same consequences.

celticforever

1.) 21 Apr 2016 21:51:42
Think your a bit harsh on armstrong. The guy has been played out of position all season. He hasn't turned into a bad player. Also mulgrew has been out for most of the season and when he has came in he has balanced out the defence. The rest of who you mentioned i agree.

2.) 21 Apr 2016 22:47:08
Players have not played well, but the major fault was the manager. The flaws of the system were there for all to see on Sunday, these players will be better next season when the team shape is better.

Zlatan on a free would be nice as well. :)

It should be a 4-3-1-2 for me as Commons isn't fast or tricky enough for the wing.

---------------Bailly-------------

-Lustig---Ambrose---Simunovic---Tierney---

-------Johansen--Bitton--McGregor----

--------------Commons---------------

----------Cole------Griffiths-------

Few points I'm not happy about, first of all I'm sickened by the constant inclusion of Johansen every week, McGregor has been poor recently also so I would have liked to have seen Allan and Rogic starting in their positions for this game instead who are both on the bench. I also would have liked to have seen Nesbitt on the bench as this should have been the perfect opportunity to get him some game time off the bench. I'm also all for playing youth like Tierney, however, imo Ronny is over using the bhoy and is going to burn him out. He doesn't have the physical upper body to be playing every week yet as he is still developing which is why Izzy should be getting used more regularly. He should be easing Tierney in more slowly instead he chucked him right into the deep end which is not good management.

Anyway, hopefully a convincing victory with a good performance on top of it. There's no excuses I've seen the pitch and it is in great condition.

However a lot of folk won't be happy with JC or JK taking over temporarily, the three of them need to leave together.

Very underwhelmed recently with some of the names being linked, Grigg/ Graham/ Fletcher are all names that don't get me excited having already purchased my season ticket in the hope of watching someone in the ilk of Jonathan Soriano/ Finboggason/ Ben Yedder or even Zlatan which I know is pie in the sky but you never know.

We've pushed the boat out for a manager, it's time we did the same for a striker. Those names we've been linked with is not pushing the boat out imo, far from it.

We for sure need another CB at least, I think Ambrose time is up, Boyata is a bomb scare, Simunovic is always injured and Lustig who can be used as a CB is injury prone as well. Mulgrew as folk saw last night for Scotland should not be given a new contract and has also been injury prone for two years now and I'll be raging if he gets a new contract.

Could be needing at least two CBs if Ambrose, Boyata and Mulgrew leave as expected (Don't think Rodgers will rate Boyata, he likes players to be excellent passers in ALL positions) .

Seen the Will Grigg song chant converted into one for Rodgers, don't know if it will take off. It goes.

Rodgers is hired, Warburtons terrfied

Rodgers is hired, Warburtons terrfied

Nanananananan nananananana

Repeat.

{Ed007's Note - That song's going to be used all over the place next year, hopefully not for long.}
