There's a guy who comes into my work a couple of days a week he's in his 80s and he and I have struck up a Great relationship over the last year because of our love of Celtic it's amazing to hear his stories of teams over the years he has seen from the 40s right the way through till now but we got chatting today about referees and there blatant bias against us over the last few years and he told me it's been going on for as long as he has followed Celtic and told me of a time when the late great Johnny Doyle was sent off for hitting the ref with a cross against Aberdeen I would be interested to know if any you guys slightly older than me remember this incident.

I remember it and you can find the clip on YouTube. Was an absolute shocking decision.

It was against Ayr at Somerset and it was a ridiculous decision think king Kenny was playing as well.

Think if you can remember Johnny Doyle, you should be able to remember that incident.

My dad told me Celtic were chasing an equaliser against Ayr Utd when Johnny crossed the ball which struck the ref and knocked him over. The referee got up and sent the Celtic player off. who ran off in disgust.
Celtic and Johnny Doyle who was playing against his old club, I am told lost the game 2-1.
Celtic appealed the crazy red card but the sfa refused to overturn the suspension.

I googled the incident and it turns out the sfa DID overturn the suspension after a disciplinary hearing.

What no one mentions in defence of the ref. he had blown for an offside against Johnny, and the ref was knocked out momenterially.
Whilst no excuse as the game changed from that moment on but as someone who was at the game and close to the incident it caused great frustration amongst the support.
If i remember correctly we went on to complete the double that year. 1974 beating Airdrie in the final.

Cheers for all the replies guys I'm a couple of years too young to have seen Johnny Doyle play but obviously I'd heard a lot about him over the years but never heard of this incident on another matter that I'm too young for but my auld granda used to tell me about George Connelly and how he was probably the most gifted player to come through the parkhead gates and should have went on to be an absolute legend but personal life got too big for him didn't like the fame and rumours about his wife got the better of him again I'd be interested in hearing people's thoughts on this or was he just my grandas favourite player an he couldn't see past him a bit like me with rogic.

The incident happened in 1977 and Celtic beat Dundee utd 3-0 in 1974 and Airdrie 3-1 in 1975.
All I was told about George was that he kept himself to himself and was a natural gifted footballer who could play defence or midfield.
He won player of the year before he retired at an early age due to personal problems and he also didn't like all the limelight.
The best clip I have seen of George was when he took the ball of greigs toe and slotted it into the net in a 4-0 scottish cup final victory in 1969.

I saw George Connolly come out the tunnel at Rugby Park at half time playing keepie uppy and went round the track at the side of the pitch keeping the ball in the air till he got back round and disappeared up the tunnel. It was a testimonial game for Frank Beattie which Celtic won 7-2. I think it was also Dalglish’s debut. He scored 6 that night I think. I wonder if any fellow tims can confirm that or perhaps tell me I dreamt it?

George Connelly was my favorite Celtic player. He very rarely lost possession of the ball. He played at left half but could probably have played anywhere because he was that good. He is fondly remembered for taking the piss out of John Greig and rounding the goalie to score in the Scottish cup final.

Jock Stein said it was totally wrong decision to send Doyle off . Stein said that if Doyle had tried to hit the referee from that distance he would certainly have missed.

Gorge Connolly when he was younger went out at Celtic Park at half time of a big European night and did keeps upy all round the pitch .
Absolutely the best player I ever seen, pity his career was so short.
