Paddy McCourt says progression in the Champions League would be a boost both to Celtic and to Scottish football as a whole.

The Northern Irishman is pushing for a starting berth in his side's third qualifying round match with HJK next week, having impressed in the midweek friendly defeat to Norwich City.

Celtic haven't reached the group stages of the competition since the 2008/09 season and McCourt is confident the current crop can return to the last 32.

"It is important for us, first and foremost, he said. "We maybe need good news for the country and the league as a whole.

"It's more important for us as a team. We want to test ourselves there and, to be honest, that's where every player wants to be playing. We will be doing our utmost to do that.

"It is going to be difficult, there is no doubt about that. We've confidence in the players we have here and we will be going out on Wednesday to put on a good performance and hopefully take a lead back there."

McCourt started as a holding midfielder in Celtic's game with Norwich City, impressing those in attendance.

Having started just 16 of his 69 appearances for the club, the player says he is happy to return to the role if it means a regular berth.

"I don't really mind, to be honest. I know it is cliched to say 'as long as I am in the team', but I genuinely mean that.

"If the manager sees me playing there, then I've got no problem playing there.

"I haven't played that role much, but I started to play there towards the end of last season and the start of this one. The more I play it, the more I am getting used to it."

Look at the central midfielders we have in the squad at the moment...there is not a chance paddy will start in centre midfield (holding midfielder) unless there are major injuries

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd have Paddy in a free role this season. He'd run riot and be player of the year.
Anton

Agree0 Disagree0

I would punt Paddy. He has not progressed at all and doesn't look like he wants to be a tic player. A new team and new start would suit him IMO. Hbhoy.

Agree0 Disagree0

Give the guy a run in the team and then make a statement

Agree0 Disagree0

McCourt isn't able to play 90 minutes every week. He's top brass though and that's why he was Celtic's most used sub. I'd definitely keep Paddy because all be it from the bench or every other game, he's got a barrel load to offer.

Please Neil DONT SELL PADDY

In my opinion Paddy is the reason i have my season ticket a True Football Entertainer the only player at Parkhead that makes u draw breath every time he gets the ball.
Well worth the ticket Price.

Agree0 Disagree0

I buy my S/B because I support Celtic, not too see one player. Sorry but Paddy has had his chances and took none of them. Not saying he is not a very talented player, just saying IMO he needs a new team to get him going again. I dont expect him to feature much this season for us. Hbhoy.

Just reading the paper there seeing that Rhodes has said Celtic wouldn't interest him, I'm just wondering if wee are still looking for a CF who it could be? Haven't seen us linked with anyone for that position other than Rhodes, any ideas Ed?

Flynny

Believable6 Unbelievable9

He didnt say that Flynny....in the rags it's reported he said that he's not sure if a move to Celtic would interest him, in real life he said he wasn't sure of interest from Celtic

Not so much a rumour but was thinking of a commanding CB that would be in our price range. What about Sol Bamba, don't think he would cost too much and has looked good at Leicester since joining from Hibs? Also a first pick for ivory coast every time. Thoughts.....

Believable6 Unbelievable11

Didn't he get sold to Trabzonspor last week?

Jungle Bhoy.

Agree0 Disagree0

Went for 750k, absolute bargain

Agree0 Disagree0

Sol Bamba, you are having a laugh....even worse that Gary Caldwell

Iain

Sol Bamba has moved to Trabzonspor unfortunately. i agree - would have been a good signing. Exactly the sort of player we should be looking at.

seen in the daily mail man utd and arsenal are interested in wanyama any truth or just paper talk ? hh

Believable10 Unbelievable11

He is fitting of a club like that looking at him; although, I hope not.

Agree0 Disagree0

Would not surprise me one bit. the boy is gonna be a superstar. if celtic fail in qualifying for the CL he cud go for as little as £5m. other top players will do the same. i shudder to think of the quality we will have at our disposal come september should we fail to qualify. these qualifiers will decide who goes and who stays

Agree0 Disagree0

This is what wanyama has tweeted just this morning "This is Distraction am well focused with Champions league football here looking forward to it", reading into this I can't see him thinking about anything else apart from Celtic n champions league football.

Just a thought I think only a really good offer would get him away from us.

Cumby Bhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

Any offer for wanyama has to be £10.000.000 plus. he is class as could be seen after the game today
