was just wondering if anyone that regularly watches the u20s and development games reckons any of the squad will mature into starting members of the 1st team over the next couple of years?

Believable6 Unbelievable5

Marcus fraser, Filip Twardzik, Paul George, Bahrudin Atajic, Jackson Irvine could all make it, but it all depends if they get some game time to show what they can do. Sometimes a few injuries for the first team mean an opportunity arrises but they're form isn't great or they are injured and miss they're opportunity. Luck plays a part.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ataijc seems to be on fire this season, has scored a lot of goals including a cracker volley against Hearts last week.

haven't seen much of him myself. Anyone know what type of player he is and whether he might get some 1st team games this year

Agree0 Disagree0

The boy atajic is a footballer, a clever thoughtful player who seems to have a good passing range, good quick feet and certainly an eye for goal. I have seen the lad play on a few occasions and though he mostly played in the same position each time the demands made of him varied largely. I feel that he is at home middle to front but it would appear that our coaches are unsure of which role suits his talents most accordingly.

This is a positive btw, its not like they're thinking "there's a player there somewhere, how do we get performances out of him", I would say its more a case of the boy being technically good meaning he has the ability to play various positions/roles in the team.

Playmaker or goalscorer? Not sure which suits his attributes either, time will be the judge.

Jamie Mac(thinks we'll see the boys career really take off in the sacred hooped jersey)

Agree0 Disagree0

Happy days, hopefully he's the playmaker supply Tony Watt for years to come then.

any of the young centre halfs up to much?

Agree0 Disagree0

I have a keen interest in the youth squad and in particular D Johnstone who is a big tall centre forward, he is starting to bulk up a bit now so all positive signs and he is scoring regularly in the next gen series and had a full page write in the benfica match programme so i would hope he can make a break through at some point. So much talent in our youth set up it just shows the commitment and quality of staff we have to nurture these players. Carry on the good work guys

I think we should rethink our contracts with ALL players. For example if we qualify for the champions league then we match Premiership wages for that season. Obv wont be a simple procedure but that way we can retain our best players, improve our euro chances etc. Just a thought but surely this would mean we could attract better players?

Believable2 Unbelievable16

Simply no business sense in that. I wish it was that simple but NL has got it right, buy cheap unknown quality players and sell for a profit. Until our league gets better and attracts better quality players or some sort of Euro league is created with some other countries with big fish clubs in little ponds i.e. Ajax. and then we can attract players of top quality and pay them top cash.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry mate but uve obviously got no business skills or failed to think this one through.
Quite simply, u want us to increase our salary ten fold because we MAY qualify for CL last 16? Big business risk.
All ure saying is to incentivise players by increased salary based on performance. I admire that and it goes back to the old days of McLean at Utd, rewarding winning performances where as nowadays wages paid for turning out. Unfortunately, EPL salaries and domestic situation will always see us as second rate. There's the arguement of last wednesday, atmosphere , result etc etc but afriad that until we ever reach EPL (cant see it myself) then we'll always struggle to get the very best established pros. We're doing the right thing, great scouting system. Stevo Dundee

Agree0 Disagree0

What an absurd idea! Define a premiership wage....is it 65k? 8ok? 160k per week? Not a chance in hell would that happen or even be sustainable. When a business model works, why change it? Especially when the change would drag our club to the graveyard?

Mikey

Agree0 Disagree0

Just a wee thought, something has to change if we are to remain in a strong position, as England will snatch all assets at cheap prices. luka modric came from zagreb to spurs at 17 million without being a finished article, how can the Croatian league justify higher prices?Agree with scouting system , John parks is an essential part of the future of our club.Hail Hail

Agree0 Disagree0

It is interesting you want us to throw money away that we don't have - chasing what exactly?
English Premier League Chairmen and Chief Execs have had a meeting yesterday, to ultimately bring in a 'break-even' policy for their League - based on UEFA Fair-play rules (which have still to be implemented for European competition).
The EPL - despite its HUGE cash flow - is absolutely hemorrhaging money - total club debt 2.4 BILLION - yes BILLION (Report by Deliotte My 2012). Man City lost 195M last year.
My point is, (and it's the same as over the summer) money/wages/transfer fees do not guarantee success. The books must be balanced at all times and proper short, medium and long-term plans must be in place - for both on, and off the field. I have long suspected the EPL bubble could burst, and Platini was obviously concerned enough for Euro football as a whole to try and control spending.
Therefore, I would say congratulations to Dermot Desmond, Peter Lawwell, Neil Lennon and John Park - whose plans are actually working.
One final point - we have long debated about changes in football (perhaps Leagues) being driven by money. It may not be money but DEBT that actually drives the changes. There could yet be a Tsunami on its way..............kbt1978

Agree0 Disagree0

Sounds like the way oldco used to do thing and look what happened to them! NL and the board wouldn't risk any of celtics money just to keep a player or 2...if they want to go, let them go....our scouting is almost the best in the world as regards to getting value for money and also the option to sell on for profit. Its the way forward for celtic until the spl gets better...and that's an if it get better! I don't want to have a 'save the hoops' day because of bad business sense, been there before untill wee fergie came and saved us from extinction. I want the best players in the hoops, but not at the expense of the whole club maybe going under in the future. We'll be rolling in it if we make last 16...and what people seem to forget about is Financial fair play rules for european football, we don't break even each year..bye bye champ league...is it worth the gamble just for the last 16?

Shugthetim82

Agree0 Disagree0

If it ain't broke then don't fix it ! Look where this sort of idea took the lot from Govan !

Agree0 Disagree0

Your having a laugh the champions league money wouldn't cover premiership wages take those thick green goggles off 8D

Agree0 Disagree0

I actually thought of this aswell. We might get alot of money out of this champions league campaign, we won't use that money to buy a 10 mil player so why not use the money to offer our good players deals of a similar nature to the premiership in order to keep them and continue to make a mark in europe over the years. If we don't we will lose them and we can't always exect little gems to be found every year to take us to european success.

Agree0 Disagree0

And consideration should be given to reducing ticket prices substantially for fans. If indeed we do get to the last 16 or who knows do well in Europa why can the fans be rewarded just like the players are? The whole football world knows we are the most passionate fans in the world where's our bonus? I said in another thread CFC suits must be aware that killing the goose that lays the golden egg is a real danger. It is high time charity began at home with hard working guys who are making huge sacrifices to get to CP and support the team. Lets see if the business model actually includes the fans. Good to see at last after many years of discussion some kind of fan representation being considered at board level. Way way overdue! Sopot Celt

Does anyone think that Hooper might go on a "Webster" at the end of the season.
I think it is increasingly likely and he may have been tapped up.

Believable10 Unbelievable14

A 'Webster'?....forgive my ignorance but who, or what in the blue hell is a 'Webster'?

p.s if it is the guy that used to play for what do you call them....them that used to play at ibrox? then dont bother replying coz his name should never be in the same sentence as Hooper...unless of course a goal against the mini people is being described

Mikey

Agree0 Disagree0

I think he'll be away in january the way things are going with him, he's not wanted to be here since the summer, wanted prem move...didn't happen and I think it didn't happen cause celtic didn't get any of the targets they were after during the summer. If he's not away in january, he will most defo be away come the summer, tapped up? Wouldn't be surprised, we don't know what the agents get upto behind the scenes.

Shugthetim82

Agree0 Disagree0

He'll not go anywhere until the summer !

Agree0 Disagree0

Webster loop hole relies on going to play in a foreign country ( england being classed as foreign in football ) dont know how that would stand with hooper going back to play in his own i might be wrong but think you need to be out the first team squad and needs to be a 5 year contract or more that lets you leave in the 3rd .... so in short .... no

Looking forward to saturday but the daft kick off time may undo potential to get a decent crowd strange as it sounds a few thousand dons coming out the woodwork could help to rejuvinate a once anticipated fixture as they are going well so far it is also a big game for us to lay down a marker in our current patchy run of spl form

my son kicked the ball back on the pitch and now neil lennon wants to offer him a contract

why is the need to to tie all players down after half a good season {Ed007's Note - Perhaps Watt has triggered a clause in his previous contract that, for example, once he made X amount of first team appearances, he was entitled to a better contract. It is quite common in young player's contracts to contain such stipulations.}

Believable2 Unbelievable12

Well done Celtic! Tony has shown a talent that is quite rare to see. I've mentioned before, he plays a similar game to the Wayne Rooney who started out at Everton. Tony deserves his new contract just on his handful of performances. Not sure what the terms of the deal are, but I bet the club tied up a cracking talent for a decent amount of money. We could end up lacking in good young strikers in the near future.

BigRab

Agree0 Disagree0

The reason to me why NL is tying players down is not because they have half a good season . The reason is their potential . Tony Watt looks like a superstar in the making so giving him an improved contract seems common sense to me . Maybe after what happend with Feruz ( I'm not sure the ins and outs with contracts Ed will put me right ) Celtic wont want burnt again , same with Liam Miller ...........DH {Ed007's Note - You are on the right track DH, all the club would get is training compensation.}

Agree1 Disagree0

He's an outstanding prospect and next year would be going into the last year of his deal. This makes total sense and i am personally delighted. He is being scouted by 3 or 4 premiership teams most likely waiting like vultures to alert his agent next year and try and convince him not to sign and that he will get a much better deal with them. HAVE YOU NOT HEARD THIS STORY BEFORE? It happens all the time now. This is good business again by Celtic. Open your eyes man!

Agree0 Disagree0

Islam ferouz?

Agree0 Disagree0

Did your son score the winner against the greatest team thats ever been? NO didnt think so, So belt up mate,.,.kbarry

Agree0 Disagree0

At times I really wonder what goes through people's head. We signed watt on an improved deal due to the fact that hes an outstanding prospect and after the barca performance we can make 15 x the profit regardless of what happens in the next 18 months. That's why we try and get all our players tied up on lounger contracts... It increases value and represents good business! Should any club be desperate to sign one of our players we can name OUR price and not having them tell us take that or you will get nothing in the summer. Good work Celtic!

Agree0 Disagree0

Above poster i agree with you mate. Although Tony Watt cost Celtic only 70 grand. 10-15 times profit on that would be 700k-1.1 million

If he develops the way it looks like he will, your talking 70 TIMES THE PROFIT.
5 MILLION. Maybe more.

But lets not get ahead of ourselves and put to much pressure on the lad. He still has a long way to go. Delighted he's signed up though.

Agree1 Disagree0

OP what a ridiculous post , anyone with any idea about the modern game can see Tony Watt has all the credentials to be extremely successful. He has pace, power and very good technical ability bearing in mind the lads only 18 . The only person that can stop Tony Watt reaching the top of his profession is Tony Watt, but what i've seen of the lad so far he looks very level headed. Great piece of business Celtic........Stevie

Agree1 Disagree0

Tony watt will play for scotland at some point next year

Agree0 Disagree0

I went to school with Tony in coatbridge, played in the school team and in p,e and watched him with airdrie am over the moon that he,s acheived this but from my real point of view overall, guys a know he,s been incredible so far but I know betrr strikers my age that are around trust me, people over here say that Tony wasn't really that good in school n that n that n he,s went on n done well but guys the only reason im mentioning this is to point out that no increased pressure should be put on the guy, sorry mate but there is better boys about its just a case of finding them {Ed007's Note - Well phone up Liverpool and Man Utd with their names, that should keep their attention away from Watt.}

Agree1 Disagree1

U talk rubbish watt has done well and deserves his chance of a longer contract

The senior people in this game have got it all wrong.
The spl should not dribble money down to lower leagues at all.
The reckless SFL model would bust Scottish football.
Fans of spl clubs; hearts, Motherwell, Dundee, st johnstone, kilmarnoch,.... Cannot afford to lose a single penny in these harsh times to sfl1, sfl2 and sfl3 clubs. Those clubs need to survive on their own fans money and their own business plans.
It's tough love but the top tier needs to maintain the highest quality possible to save our game not support sfl3 survival, that would be madness. A wealthy high quality spl of a ten team elite which everyone aspires to, delivers hunger and honest competition. The top 8 survive and bottom two drop down. Better viewing for fans nowhere to hide in mid table. Exciting marketable football. Watch the fans return.
Spl is in no financial state to be charitable.
Diverting fans gate money paid to support their own club to other clubs is theft, it's illegal within UK and Europe laws and is morally reprehensible.
Artificial attempts at propping up poorly managed, poorly supported teams by diverting money from top tier will certainly end Scottish football. Survival of the fittest in these harsh lean times.
Spl fans money to pay salaries of beer belly SFL chairmen? Let your own fans buy you beers if they want to.

Believable10 Unbelievable4

Around 90% of fans like myself don't want a 10 team spl been there seen it done it. This is what gets me about our game forget what the paying punters who support our game want then they try to tell u what u would like ? I purchase 3 season tickets each year i would not do so in future if we returned 2 a 10 team spl, my faith in those who run the game went out the windae like the rules did in the summer cutting deals breaking rules making exceptions here & there. The biggest circus & clowns in world football but hey we ain't laughing ! AbS 1888

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said mate. .H.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree mate, a 10 team league wouldn't be that good, I wouldn't be attending either nor would most of my friends. I might be talking tosh here, but I think a simple change like play-offs for both relegation and promotion, have a relegation play-off in spl with 1 going down automatically and another going down through play-offs between league positions 11...10...9....8? Not sure if that would work, but could poss make spl a bit more attractive for tv etc...SFL 1,2,3 should do the same, with a promotion play-off...out right champs go up a tier, and positions 2,3,4,5 play it out for the 2nd promotion spot? Similar to english leagues, but a lot smaller scale...again not sure if it would or could work..just a thought I had.

Shugthetime82

Agree0 Disagree0

The whole scottish football thing/set up is a complete joke, always chopping&changing the english would never stand for all this bullsh*t,.,.kbarry

Agree0 Disagree0

England has 10 times the population. Multiply the scottish Gates by 10 and you will see a higher percentage of scots watch football than english. The whole league idea is outdated. The nfl has it right.

Agree0 Disagree0

How can the op say the sfl model would wreck our game? U think the spl's model to split the league into 2 at some point is any better?

As for money dribbling down, the spl prob still owe the sfl for the money they withheld tryin to blackmail them for rangers to go into div 1. Complete farce, we should have one ruling body, no more!

Agree0 Disagree0

Would never be top 10 elite without rangers.

Agree0 Disagree1

With respect fella, the last thing scottish footy needs right now is a smaller 'elite'. Its dull now because the same clubs have played each other for years....reducing the number doesnt increase the quality!
It will take years for scottish football to recover from its current position, but you might get more fans involved if your teams relied increasingly on home grown young talent, not buying overpriced junk on high wages. That and reducing ticket prices to entice folks back. The old firm havent helped the wider game by hoovering up other clubs talent and then often not playing them! Time to stop being greedy and self serving and look after the wider game...... A strong scottish game will make celtic stronger....a strong celtic not necessarily the other way round!

Doesn't matter how you arrange, divide or re-arrange a pun a mince, it's still a pun a mince.
So I have little confidence in this proposed SFL/SPL re-organisation having any profound effect on our game.
Cynics may say it's only a conjuring trick to levitate Sevco, others may think it's beneficial or essential?
Simply put, we have far too many teams for such a small Nation and as long as stubborn fans would prefer administration etc to amalgamation; no tampering or re-vamping will transform football significantly forward.
We saw how attendance fluctuated between the CL game and the St Johnstone game inside a week for the biggest club in the land, so what if it had been (no disrespect) Cowdenbeith or Morton on Sunday?
OK that's just one example, but the full cost of a day out to watch a game means supporters have to pick and choose more; and by diluting the product, I think would result in reducing paying customers.
I do agree with Ed 007 that we need to scrap the ridiculous 'split' asap, but we need to be cautious about what end product we are creating and how attractive it is to TV and listen to supporters views.
Otherwise we will see another League re-shuffle agenda drawn up in 2016/17!
I do think our smaller clubs have to seriously consider merging/selling stadia sites where appropriate to save costs and achieve economical stability.
Ticket pricing (for Cup-Ties initially) could also be reduced to guage cost effectiveness and make multiple games a week more affordable?

JJ I have said for years there is no plan no leadership and no desire to change. These guys the SFA and many chairmen would rather we were a Luxemburg on the international stage and even domestically. They are the worst type of businessman. Filled with self importance and their own fragile pathetic egos. They forget the fans make the game not the bloody suits! What we need is a good dose of Gladsnost to sort the tossers out. Thank God we have good people at CFC but we are pissing against the wind most of the time. We do need to reduce ticket prices or take some other initiative for example if we get to last 16 make it a free entrance but something has to be done on this and many other fronts.

Agree0 Disagree0

Free entrance, if celtic reach the last sixteen?, the champions league is were clubs make there money!

Agree0 Disagree0

We are in real danger of killing the goose that lays the golden eggs! Attendances are dropping like a stone at CP. I won't be surprised to see averages of 30-35000 soon. People are rooked and the club has to do something to reward fans for their allegiance and support. The financial crisis is getting worse not better according to most reports. It's all very well being a success in the CL but if the ordinary fan can't afford to support the team what is the point in having a football club to support! Sopot Celt
