That’s another 4/ 5 players brought up by Celtic in the youth, taught how to be professional and sent on there way to decent Scottish clubs. Sadly not all make it at our club.

Good player. Quite surprised by this maybe the boy wanted to play first team. Good luck to him.

We produce players mostly for the wee diddy teams. It’s been a feature for years. Very, very few of our own young players establish themselves. I have the feeling this situation will continue as I haven’t seen anybody who is equipped to be in the team we want to be next year.

We can kid ourselves on, as many do year on year about this young guy or that one, the facts remain that apart from KT, it’s none since McGreggor and Forrest. I would wager at the end of this season, the only young guy who has a chance of that was bought from St Mirren.

Mikey Johnston will be a wonderful player for Celtic.

Agree0 Disagree1

15 Jun 2018 15:45:05
I will believe it when I see it Stan. Too many false dawns. mickey looks too fragile to me. He has technical ability but his stature isn’t strong enough.

Jury is out for me.

How much do we spend on our youth set-up? £2m per annum maybe?
Since Tommy Burns set it up properly - 18 years ago - we’ve had 12 player in the first team squad:
Marshall
Kennedy
McGeady
Maloney
McManus
O’Dea
Forrest
MacGregor
McGeough
Henderson
Tierney
Ralston

So that equates to an average of 1 player every 1.5 years - at an estimated average cost of £3m per player - not a bad return, especially when you think we got the guts of £10mil for McGeady and would get £20mil+ for Tierney, so we’d make our money back if we needed to.

Of course, we do produce a lot of players for other SPL sides, but that’s part of the selling point isn’t it? When trying to persuade a parent that Celtic is the best place for their talented kid, the club sell the “good grounding” leading to either breaking into the squad (like those above) or finding a good level club to take them on., and the potential of being a Jackson Irvine - didn’t quite make it with us, went to Ross County then the English Championship (for a decent wedge) and today is playing in the World Cup.

Seems we are keen on Swiss International Fabian Schar from Deportivo La Coruna.

Also talks been held with a young winger from sheff Wed Sean clare.

Schar would be a cracking signing if it could happen.
Just what we need at the back.

This popped up a while back (regarding Schar) what a signing that would be. Where are you hearing this now?

Agree0 Disagree1

14 Jun 2018 22:50:08
I reckon if we did want Schar we’d have it well on the way to completion already because he’s going for free and a couple of decent games at the WC would put him in the sights of some clubs with big money to offer in wages.

Agree0 Disagree1

15 Jun 2018 08:46:41
Sorry I’m talking nonsense, he’s not on a free he’s just available for a cut price.

Agree0 Disagree1

15 Jun 2018 11:13:45
I think the nonsense resides firmly in the, he could earn treble what we could offer, realm. Any player who command big wages isn’t a contender.

Word on the street ìs Armstrong has knocked back 25k a week.

Believable4 Unbelievable1

14 Jun 2018 15:35:34
Hunt him.

Agree4 Disagree1

14 Jun 2018 15:41:23
Well he must be very hopeful of a move to epl, english championship clubs, with the execption of the recently relegated clubs are now playing an average of 11k a week, less than half of what he has knocked back. Good Luck to him, the Celtic jersey is obviously to small for his ego, so out him asap.

Agree1 Disagree2

14 Jun 2018 16:00:46
@Malika20 He’s not a supporter and wants to test himself at a higher level. That in no way suggests the jersey is too big for him.

14 Jun 2018 16:44:20
Which street? Why does feck all ever happen on mine?

14 Jun 2018 16:50:09
That higher level is a myth
The EPL is boring and pi$h.

Agree1 Disagree3

14 Jun 2018 18:11:35
EPL is a far higher level than the SP without a shadow of a doubt Island Celt.

Agree2 Disagree2

14 Jun 2018 18:34:50
He will be abused out of Town for turning down 25k a week to go get 30k a week elsewhere, yet every one of us on here would be doing the same if we were at our work and a company offered us an extra 5k a week to do the same job. He owes us nothing just like we owe him nothing. Football fans are very hypocritical. Let him go and good luck to him on his day he was a joy to watch. He will be replaced like the many thousands before him.

Agree2 Disagree1

14 Jun 2018 18:31:47
Fair point, but I still maintain it’s overhyped and the games I watch (and to be fair I don’t watch many) never really amaze me.
I think the Scottish game is drastically under valued and poorly marketed and the EPL is overrated and brilliantly marketed.
Separate pony How far do you reckon England will go in the World Cup Kev?

Agree3 Disagree1

14 Jun 2018 19:26:00
For a start i seriously doubt we offered him 25k a week.

Agree0 Disagree1

14 Jun 2018 19:28:57
Totally agree IC. When you compare what we get in TV revenue to the likes of even Poland, Romania and Denmark its disgusting. I hope the new deal is soley with BT and they give Scottish Football a good cash injection.

14 Jun 2018 19:46:00
Never worth £25 grand a week has never made s postition his own through either injury, form or tatics so it’s no great loss wish him all the best in the next stage of his career.

He also admitted that he only wanted to stay until he finished his Uni degree, which he completed this summer. Move him on along with a few others and we will bring in quality replacements.

14 Jun 2018 20:26:59
To be fair none of us are earning thousands a week and most would play for Celtic for nothing.

14 Jun 2018 20:35:00
He's a top player and I hope he stays. I amazes me how so many people are privy to a deal that's supposed to be private.

Agree0 Disagree1

15 Jun 2018 10:48:02
I wouldn’t play for nothing. My ability and poise costs.

Agree2 Disagree2

{Ed007's Note - And the wife and the bank manager would likely have something to say about it. If guys like Tommy Burns, Paul McStay and KT etc etc wouldn't play for nothing I wonder how many people who say it actually would, you're running about giving everything you've got in training and games and Marvin Compper's getting about £15k a week and you'd be happy getting nothing?}

17 Jun 2018 11:12:36
Don't think for a minute that SA was offered 25k per week thought that negotiations had ended a while back anyway the boy done Celtic a good turn really got us back into the cup final v Aberdeen and his name is etched in history as a double treble invincible. Good luck to the lad.

No way in hell is the figure £9m in my opinion.

Sly would have caught wind of the deal going through taking the initial fee and writing a story. I reckon it will be 4-5m with add ons.

I have to say all is very quiet on the transfer front. although we don't need a total overhaul but a few whispers would be nice.
The last 2 windows BR has said there will be movement and while it's still really early I still can't help thinking it could be a quiet window until later on in.
I know it's hard to criticise after a double treble but we can't rest and be content.
We lost a lot of points in the league and with other teams strengthening it's a must we do also.
As I say it's still early and I know we will be working hard in the back ground.
What are people's thoughts on the dembele situation. could our transfer policy hinge on him staying or going.

Believable0 Unbelievable3

14 Jun 2018 11:23:09
If he wants to stay, he will sign an extension. If he wants to go we will let him. But i doubt we depend on it, if he wants to stay i don't think he would be forced out unless its really stupid money, like EPL prices, which won't happen. I wouldn't be suprised if he stays another year, last season his profile dropped a bit. He needs another good season to get the big clubs sniffing around again.

Agree0 Disagree1

14 Jun 2018 14:28:35
With the English transfer window closing a lot earlier than ours, there could be a few deals done. The teams down south will be looking to get rid of anyone not making there squad.

We will not and can not spend 9 million for OE to play second fiddle to MD.
Does this mean it's a change of shape next season maybe 2 up front. or is DM maybe away.
Hopefully things starting to ramp up.
