BBC QUOTE "Former Scotland centre-half Stephen McManus is hoping to save Celtic "millions of pounds" in his new role as the club's under-18s coach. " That'll maybe help to replace the Millions of Pounds he and Defensive Partner Gary Caldwell (only ever played well in a Scotland shirt) cost Celtic, including us going out of The Champions League 2-1 against Aalborg in November 2008 because of an own goal by EACH of them . . . Do we really need our Young Players being influenced by this man . . .

He was also the guy that won 7 major honours with the club.
3 titles
2 SC
2 LC
On too of that helped the team qualify for last 16 of champions league TWICE.

Very poor comment. McManus was a good player and captain for Celtic. Strachan who was a captain himself, seen great qualities to make young Stephen at the time, the man to lead his team.
He comes across as a gentleman and leader and the youngsters will look up to him.
I wish them all the best for the future.

Bloody Nora, he was a solid captain and young players would learn plenty. Not the most gifted centre back we’ve ever had but that doesn’t mean he’s not a decent coach. European and international experience and you want to hang him out to dry for an own goal?
There are some fickle fans on here right enough.

Why would we subject our youth players to the advice of a title winning captain who knows exactly what it takes to come through the youth ranks and into the first team? I'll see your Aalborg OG and raise you scoring in our only ever win against AC Milan, one of the all-time great clubs and great Celtic Park European nights.

McManus wore his heart on his sleeve and always put his head in where it hurt. He'd probably be the first to admit to having his limits, but he always gave his all for the cause. The youngsters will learn plenty from this good Celtic man.

I can't believe what I just read. Very harsh on a man who gave his all for our club. A decent, solid defender with great leadership qualities. I couldn't understand why Mowbray was so quick to get him out the door. I wasn't bothered about Gary "50p Heed" Caldwell going, but I liked Mick and I'm glad he's back in this capacity. Good luck to him.

I think you are falling into the trap of thinking a brilliant player makes a brilliant coach, a not so brilliant player understands the hard work and dedication that is needed to play at the highest level, he can probably empathise and spot something in a player that maybe a bit of application and encourage ment will bring out, only time will tell, don't think Jock Stein was that brilliant as a player.

Can't believe anyone is even having to comment on this post to defend McMannus the guy was rock solid and he's a good acquisition to the coaching staff. I'm sure plenty of players will look up to him as he had a good career with us.

Think you'll find Caldwell and McManus were a pretty solid partnership until we introduced that bomb scare Loovens in between them.

Jaw1988. I will never forget that game. Run ragged the first half. Jambos were knackered after 60 mins and we just kept going. definitely the day the title swung our way and ruined the jambos bid.
