It has long been my opinion, along with many others on here, that we needed a quality CB even before the injuries to Erik and Boyata. I'm excited about Rivaldo but I'm hoping he's Erik's replacement if he moves and BR is still on the lookout for one more who can walk straight in and develop a formidable partnership with Jozo.

I have a feeling that this is the case Kev. Rodgers knows Jozo needs a solid partner. Sviatchenko must be on his way out, plus Brendan pretty much said Coetzee is a project player, I'm hoping for duverne. There was mention of a 10 million + striker coming in wonder whi.

That chat was about Azmoun from Rostov/ Rubin Kazan. There's surely no way we'd go for that for a potentially 3rd choice striker. £5 or 6 million on a real quality partner for Jozo, Paddy Roberts and whatever striker the club has been scouting.

Rodgers has already said that when Boyata is fit he plays. He sees him as his number 1 centre back. The only way we'll sign a centre back in addition to Rivaldo is if Jozo goes to Burnley.

If a player becomes available and the transfer is possible Brendan will not hesitate to replace someone in this squad LM67. We've already seen Ntcham take Armstrongs position so who says someone won't come in to take Boyatas. He did say that Mally but if you listen at the end of the clip he mentions "for the future aswell". Maybe he will be good enough to come straight in but hearing from South African league fans he's the best in the league, he just needs to bulk up a bit and I can see Brendan implementing that into his training.

Jozo is a great player but what would happen if were drawn against 2 clubs with artificial grass. Highly unlikely and not even sure if that is a possibility with the clubs in the group stages but that would be a major concern if it was to ever happen. We simply can't go into massive games like this with our best players unavailable due to surfaces.

{Ed007's Note - Artificial pitches in the CL groups (Spartak and possibly Young Boys) are scheduled to be discussed at this week's conferences in Monaco.}

Then we're going into the groups with the same defence that lost 16 group goals last season - plus a 20 year old CB who's only played in South Africa. I'm all for bringing in young guys with great potential and I hope he comes in and runs riot but there has to be a balance and I won't be happy if there isn't another CB brought in. We've got more than enough money to go out and bring in a really good, experienced, quality CB to lead the rest of the defenders in big games.

I agree Ed best chance of qualifying and the extra cash that can generate. Was hoping to be in pot 3 so that we could get Feyenoord but can't see anything other than a convincing win for Liverpool tonight.

{Ed007's Note - I don't think Liverpool qualifying is as much a formality as some people reckon, they're very suspect at the back especially at set pieces. Hoffenheim will score at Anfield and if they score first it could get interesting. I'll be cheering on the Germans anyway and that's nothing to do with our CL pot.}

Jozo played the second half against Albion rovers on plastic last season so he can play if needed. BR obviously didn't want to risk him last night due to the first leg score. I'm sure if its a CL group game he'll play.

As for Boyata, last season him and Jozo played 21 games together and we won every single one. You can see why BR doesn't want to split them up. He's obviously a very attacking manager too and without Boyata we pose almost zero threat from set pieces. Another reason to play him. Set pieces can be crucial for us in the CL as we've seen in the past with Sammy and obviously Wanyama getting big goals for us.

{Ed007's Note - Rodgers himself has said on numerous occasions that he doesn't want Simunovic playing on plastic pitches because of the effect it could have on his knee.}
