Hi Ed

Long time viewer but 1st time poster. My question to fellow fans is what would you have last 16 of champions league or europa league final

My answer is europa league final but my mate wants last 16

I would rather have a seville than a juve. what's your thoughts ed

Thanks for posting {Ed007's Note - Welcome to the site mate. I have put your question onto our polls page:

http://celticrumours.co.uk/poll6.html

Personally I would rather CL last 16. The money, prestige and profile of the CL last 16 far outweighs anything the EL has to offer.}

Believable6 Unbelievable3

The Champions League all day long-that's why we should have had another midfielder and striker signed already for these qualifiers. Just by qualifying we would make at least double what you would make by reaching the final of the Europa, also all the prestige lies with the champions league these days. The gulf between the two is only getting bigger every year. Paul

Agree1 Disagree0

EL if you win it would have far more prestige than being a CL also ran, you don't get your name in the history books by getting to the last 16 of any competition and I think the lack of respect for the EL is a British thing it's held in far greater esteem on the European mainland. {Ed007's Note - Most players (at the higher levels of the game) look upon the CL as the only show in town and THE tournament to be playing in. Look how many players are looking for moves this summer to CL clubs, Suarez and Bale for example. The Europa League will eventually go the way of the CWC and the UEFA Cup while the Champions League will go from strength to strength whilst expanding all the time, either under UEFA or as a breakaway European Super League.}

Its a dam good question mate as much as loved the then uefa cup run and I actually went to every away game home and away except suduva I've got to be honest and say champs league the reason for that is 1 if u keep getting to last 16 ul eventually crack it and fm there who know how far you can go especially with alleged fair play rules due to kick altho i'm sure the big guns will find a way round it 2 if you want to be classed as a worldwide big club outwith fanbase history etc then champs league is the place to be look at clubs like a.madrid sevilla for example very succesful europa teams but are they classed as one of the big boys the elite of europe just my personal opinion but that's what the sites about and that's why I love it

Agree0 Disagree0

Europa league final is winning the poll canny believe that! what do u make 2m? playing the best teams in the world in the cl and the money to help us go from strength to strength we are Scottish football so when we grow Scottish football grows

SOS BHOY

Agree0 Disagree0

Champions League, you make money, cup finals you make history!

AC75

Agree1 Disagree0

As far as a day out the EL final would be the better option but last 16 of the CL is what would be best for the club no question about it!
Brian DerryCelt

Agree0 Disagree0

Champions league last 16 for me as if we keep getting there we will eventually not need to qualify

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with Ed. CL.
The money is huge getting into last 16.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would rather we showed a bit of ambition. Signed two or three players of the six million mark. I know this won't happen. Look at the years we were miles ahead of rangers and didn't show ambition to keep it that way. We have two billionaires on board. Surely if they were any fans at all they would say I would like to go to the next step. I know I would as would all celtic fans. Splash the cash so it's a champions league final not a Europa. Hail hail

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd like the Europa league to go away and put a purely knock out competition in it's place. Play up the fact it's high risk for the teams, make it something totally different from the Champions League instead of a bad impersonation. Super Hardcore Knockout Cup, something like that.

Agree0 Disagree0

@AC75) On the money mate.

I couldn't have put it better myself.

The other way of looking at it is Qualifying for the Champions League group stages, earning the big bucks and finishing 3rd in the group and dropping into Europa League before going on to the final and winning it. I believe that scenario would sway most of the folk chosing CL last 16 over winning a major European trophy.

Stevensee88

Agree0 Disagree0

As samaras once said.

I'd rather count my medals than my money!

Realistically we will not win the CL in the near future, and the EL is a winnable tournament. I agree that CL is the place to be, but in years time i'd love to tell my grandchildren I saw celtic lift a European cup!

Agree0 Disagree0

Not sure I like this choice. I am a realist & recognise that what I am about to suggest is unlikely but once into the last 16 I see no reason for Celtic not to progress.
Over 2 legs we can (probably won't) but can beat most Teams in Europe. 1-0 at home. 2-1 away still sees us through & is this really that impossible against Malaga, Galatasaray, Man U or AC Milan (granted wouldn't fancy German opposition at present).
In Seville we came close against FC Porto who the following year won the Champions League. Yeah it's unlikely but let's aim higher than the last 16. Last years squad were pretty decent & got beat well by Juventus but a different draw & who knows?

Agree0 Disagree0

2003 still hurts. Sitting with my brother watching us get beat was and still is gut wrenching. I loved the feeling before the game that we could win this. If you gave me last eight I'd take it but I'd take seeing Brownie and Lennie lifting that trophy over anything less.

Melb Bhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

Worth pointing out that we didn't win anything in seville, in fact that season we allowed the worst treble winning team in scottish football history to do a clean sweep.

Anyway i'd rather WIN the euorpa league than not win the champions league (regardless of how far we get - 1/16, 1/8, 1/4)

Winning trophies is what celtic is all about, I couldn't care less about money or profits, I want to see us win cups.

Agree0 Disagree0

Good question buddy, I'd have to Say I think I'd take the trophy. Have another go at the cl league next year. If we won it, it wouldn't be a lot of money but we would have a European trophy. Fair enough I think, what a night it would be.

Darrenbhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

CL last 16, ., .kbarry

Agree0 Disagree0

CL every time, EL is a major anti climax after being in with the big boys

Agree0 Disagree0

If they make the C/L group stages, and then drop into the Europa League, its not just prestige, its also Co Efficient points, a good run in the Europa League would enhance our co efficient so the C/L group stages would be easier, as we could end up in pot 3 maybe even pot 2 if we had a good run over a few seasons, so yehh though the C/L is where we want to be, the Europa League should be considered a winnable trophy, and at least 1/4 finals

Agree0 Disagree0

I would rather Celtic won another euroean trohy, like someone said earlier, that's making history. The money doesn't matter to comete in the Scottish league

Is it true that we do not have a striker coach at cp? If so why is larsson not on our books?

SOS BHOY

Believable4 Unbelievable11

Larsson is head coach of a Swedish league 2 side so I would imagine he is concentrating on building a career as a no 1

Agree0 Disagree0

I can't think of any big clubs that specifically have a striker coach, you hear of the odd defensive coach but most clubs have a first team coach who obviously should know about every aspect of coaching. with regards Larsson - just because he was a great striker doesn't mean he could teach someone else to be a great striker! In fact usually the opposite applies and the great players are poor coaches/managers! We've had two perfect examples Liam Brady and John Barnes. Paul

Agree0 Disagree0

A striking coach wont make sammi into messi wont make stokes in to van persie, ffs stop reading the piss on zombie pro papers. al geri,, . ,

Agree0 Disagree0

If by that you mean we don't have a former striker as a coach then, yes. As for Henrik, good players don't necessarily become good coaches, good coaches weren't necessarily good players. That said, I've often thought to myself that we could perhaps do with one, given that in terms of where our coaches played we have all other areas covered. Thommo was the closest coach in a while we had to a creative player. My memory serves me that the few days Larsson spent with the first team seemed to have an impact too.

Just as a side note, related to coaching, no other Celtic fan I know seems to have an exact idea of Jim McGuiness' role. Can Ed or anyone else share any details as I read the other day he's going to be helping Paul McGinley playing golf too. Nothing critical against McGuiness here, he's clearly qualified enough at what he does, just wondering how exactly he benefits out football team. {Ed007's Note - It's kind of hard to explain what McGuiness does, I would 'label' him a sports psychologist. He is trying to instil in all the younger players the exact same values so that in the long run it will be running throughout the club.
Have a read at these, it will probably explain it better than I can Jim:

Not reading anything pal apart from a post on here so get off yer high horse! My thought was that with balde being rough around the edges we could do with him being coached by some one with specific qualitys to that position even a coach for each as we are developing youth which with extra attention could be nurtured more efficiently

SOS BHOY

Agree0 Disagree0

Have often wondered why this model isn't used by football clubs american clubs have defensive coaches and offensive coaches. and special teams coaches for the more inventive can't help but think if you added a top sprint coach from athletics in thier it would make a diffrence they could work at all levels and fit in nicely with psychology and nutrition.
allan wells sprint coach
danny mc grain defensive unit
larsson forwards coach
lubo special teams
the kids and thier coaches could benifit immensly from these people or others of this ilk

Agree0 Disagree0

Can't agree more rangobango if we add more specific coaches then our youth will only benefit! We put a lot of resources into the scouting so if we do the same with our players they will surely learn more even being in the presence of such players would lift our youth

Agree0 Disagree0

Edd, get somone at cfc to check out aron johannsson of az alma ar age 22 he has scored 25goals in 38 games him and finnbogason both scored yesterday def worth a look. {Ed007's Note - He only signed for them in January.}

Look ill never forget the day we beat aberdeen 9-1. Henrik larsson trained with celtic the day before that match and according to lenno he took hooper and stoke aside for some one on one training the game against aberdeen Hooper and stokes both hit hat tricks fact!

Agree0 Disagree0

That's American Football, not soccer.

They reason being that it is literally a completely different team for offence, defence and special. So you have a coach training basically each team.

In American football, the tactics and plays are a tad more complicated than a 4-4-2!

MgC

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks for those articles Ed. I had been thinking that McGuiness was perhaps involved with the development of sabermetrics etc., which I know NL is interested in. If he can install the same kind of fitness and winning mentality into our clubs blood then that'll do for me.

SOSBHOY, not quite sure who you're telling to get off their high horse, or what your problem is with reading other pages, but Ed posted those links for mine, and others benefit. If you start a conversation and fellow tims have the decency to take time to contribute, have a bit more respect. Pal.

Agree0 Disagree0

I often wonder why Alan Thomson was never replaced as Larsson would have been ideal.
I know he is back home learning to be a manager in his own right, so the upheaval of coming back to Celtic may not be feasible.

JJ

Agree0 Disagree0

I was replying to al geri saying stop reading zombie pro papers mate, not u I replied before your post was shown. To mgc yes they are two different sports but that does not mean that specific coaching can't help us become better! Just like another poster said we bet Aberdeen 9-1 after the king of kings visited

We never beat Aberdeen 9-1.

See tbh Ed I think celtic shoulda signed mcfadden or boyd just to use in the SPL and would also wind the people up if we got boyd! What do you think? Stevo 1888

Believable6 Unbelievable23

Boyd your having a laugh, keep taking the pills you will get better meagle tim

Agree1 Disagree2

Davie proven is a FUD, never says anything good about us. Boyd and mcfadden are both SPL rubbish they are at their level we are at ours. Neither is good enough to wear the hoops. And you should stop reading the guff they wright in the sun. Another anti-celtic bunch of piece of s@#t.

Darrenbhoy

Agree2 Disagree2

Darrenbhoy, your mate al geri here, 100% in agreement for the 1st time lol, if Andy thinks these two are in our class he needs a new career, like sweeping the streets.A shocking article, think his editor has serious issues,,,,,,,,,, .

Agree0 Disagree1

We don't need players to help us win the SPL. If they're not good enough for the champions league or don't have the potential to become a player capable of playing at level, which McFadden and Boyd don't, then don't sign them!

Agree0 Disagree1

What a lot of nonsense! Why would you even contemplate signing either of these two fuds? Think we will sign finbogasson or another striker from holland, seems to be where we are looking from the last two signings. Balde I think could be a dud signing already, why wouldn't we have played his yesterday?

Agree0 Disagree1

Stevo 1888. Put the gas an air away its making you delirious. JK

Agree0 Disagree0

How can balde be a dud? He's only played 10 mins of competitive footie. Give the big lad a chance as Lennon certainly hasn't yet he's sticking with his tried and trusted as usual to a detrimental affect on the team boerrigter looked fresh but need some game time, pity about injury. Fresh faces need as competition for places is needed to inject some much needed impetus :) HH

Willie Collum is a massive Celtic fan. The reason I know this is because he worked (maybe still does) as a Religious Education teacher at Cardinal Newman high school. My cousin was taught by him and was actually surprised that Collum is allowed to referee Celtic games because he is such a big fan of the club. So he may have had a few bad games involving Celtic, but please stop saying he is "anti-Celtic" because that's not the case at all.

Believable14 Unbelievable24

Hugh Keevins, Gerry Mcnee were both Celtic supporters but it doesn't stop them being total bellends just like Collum definitely is . DH

Agree0 Disagree0

I think conflict of interest works both ways. He is a Celtic fan, so he doesn't want to be seen to be biased, so he is a bit harder on the bhoys. I don't think he should be allowed to referee Celtic or rangers games, and I think referees should have to declare their allegiance, and be disallowed from refereeing games involving them or their rivals.
Just an opinion
No Name Poster.

Agree0 Disagree0

He's self conflicted then and to keep himself from criticism is harsher on the club than a neutral unconflicted official.

He gets it wrong. He did so AGAIN yesterday.

The problem is other officials are pro SEVCO through and through.

Agree1 Disagree0

Is that u king William gollum of sevconia .your on the wrong page
Cha67

Agree0 Disagree0

Did he ever referee SEVCO in the fourth tier?

Agree0 Disagree0

NAW he's JUST A CRAP REF. END OF .no bigotry no conspiracy, just Willie is crap at HIS PART TIME JOB, . ,, .fact.al geri.

Agree0 Disagree0

The problem is that Collum has to be seen to be harder on Celtic than any other referee otherwise he will be accused of pro-Celtic bias. That's probably why it took him so long to be given an OF game - he actually refereed an international match first! IMO he is so afraid of losing his Grade-A status that he will happily muck us over time and again. Yesterday was mild in comparison - remember the penalty he gave for Clubfoot's swan-dive when he (Collum) had his back to play? Then there's the three penalties he awarded Oldco while sending off three Hearts players. I'm not in favour of referee's declaring their allegiances - you'd get the laughable situation of 20 Partick Thistle or Pollock Juniors supporting top-flight whistlers. My solution would be to have foreign referees in the SPFL like we had a couple of years ago.

TomTheTim

Agree0 Disagree0

So if he's such a massive Celtic fan then why did he give a penalty in an Old Firm derby to Rangers a few years ago when Broadfoot clearly dived and Collum didn't see it? Get real.

Agree0 Disagree0

He is not a Celtic fan. I know him personally and he is a self-proclaimed Motherwell fan. Always has been.

Agree0 Disagree0

This is ridiculous. He's been guilty of some dreadful decisions against us but that's just part and parcel of football. I doubt that he consciously treats us worse to avoid criticism from other teams. The fact is that we as Celtic fans like to believe that everybody is against us in order to create a siege mentality. I think it can be a good thing at times but other times it can be a bit tedious and embarrassing

He's just utter keech!

Iain

Agree0 Disagree0

OP away back to your own page and read about forfar, its FACT collum is NOT a celtic man, ., .kbarry

Agree0 Disagree0

Welcome to the site Willy. Please do not try and excuse your continuing biased and utter incompetence by pretending you are a Celtic fan. I have seen many, many 'honest mistake merchants' since the 60's and you are another 'SFA agent' who's job it is to give every 50/50 decision the other way, disallow goals and ignore as many legit penalty claims by Celtic players as you can manage in a season.

JJ

Agree0 Disagree1

Don't see what difference it makes? Guy is paid to do a job even if he needs a bit of help with it lol

Agree0 Disagree0

He is consistent when refereeing Celtic games.

He gets so many big decisions wrong.

It was def a penalty and he was in perfect sight.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would just like to say you do not have to be a RC to be a Celtic fan, me and many others are not so let's be a bit bigger than that or we will start sounding like that new club The Rangers. {Ed007's Note - Nobody has even said anything about that.
It seems all the small-minded, anonymous little trolls took what they wanted to out of the OP. The point is he backed up his claim by stating he knew what his job and that he had taught his cousin who would obviously know him. Feeling a bit insecure tonight are we. Or are you just trying to stir up an argument over religion..... Coincidentally you do need to be an RC to teach Religious Studies at an RC school, who'd have thought it eh?}

Agree0 Disagree0

Again I know him and his family personally
dont want to go into it too deeply for that reason
but even as a wee boy - he was always into the rules of the game rather than just supporting the team.
he is a good guy - just as all refs sometimes he makes mistakes - but if he sees a genuine penalty/ no penalty, he will call it, regardless what teams are playing. and he can get them wrong, just like you would if you did that job.

Agree0 Disagree0

His refereeing skills are abysmal. If he is as bad in his teaching job he must be on borrowed time. JK
