Anyone else think we should retire the no. 7 in honour of henrik?
Sick of us dishing it out to players who are unworthy of wearing it, ie (Miku, ljunberg

bit late noo like.

Agree0 Disagree0

No let's find someone who is good enough to wear it larsson was a great player but he choose to leave and join barca as much as I appreciated his decision why should we retire numbers in honer of players who turn down new contracts

Agree0 Disagree1

I'm not really a fan of the whole retiring numbers thing.
Why not make it something for younger players to aspire to, rather than saying this is a level you will never attain?

Agree1 Disagree0

I see what your saying giving it to players not fit for the jersey, e.g Ljungberg, Zurawski, McDonald. wouldn't say Miku is a dud just yet, lad hasn't had much of a chance.

Agree0 Disagree0

He chose to leave, get a grip man
Tambhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

Retire the No7! This has to be the craziest thing i've ever heard in my life time. Did we retire the term "Manager" after Stein left, did we retire the shirt no's 1-11 after the Lisbon Lions! NO.
This is Celtic F. C the biggest and best footballing institution in the world. No individual ever will be bigger or better than the club. It's the individual's priviledge to put their name to Celtic not the opposite. No jersey like the badge should ever be in vain. Don't ever let anything ever like that happen.

Agree0 Disagree1

Larsson was never offered a contract extension to the reply of the 2nd post.
Larsson told Celtic that he wanted to run down and do as well as possible then try another playing path hence barca which Celtic fully understood so they had a mutual agreement, it wasn't as if it was money or anything else, obv Celtic wanted him to stay but they respected the mans ambition and loyalty so they greatly accepted it.
For me I think they should, in my lifetime as a supporter it just doesn't look the same on any player but Larsson in the hoops and i'm sure it was the same when jinky was around.
A number 9 and a number 10 can be replaced, Sutton and hartson were both fantastic servants but henrik was special.
its not just another number or something to inspire for the younger boys, its like an assest to the club which I think should be honoured as part of the clubs greatest achievments to the greatest foreign player we have had {Ed007's Note - Just to get the facts right, CFC promised Larrson a £1 million loyalty bonus if he stayed and seen out his contract. Larrson had told the club he wanted to return to Sweden after his contract expired which the club accepted. Instead of paying it from the clubs money they raised it through a fake 'testimonial' against Seville. The whole testimonial idea was a farce and embarrassing that CFC even agreed to it.
Larrson collected his £1 million and surprise surprise, he didn't go back to Sweden at the end of the season.}

Agree0 Disagree0

If it wasn't retired when Celtic's greatest player - Jinky - passed away, then why do it now? The number of a jersey (or shorts) does have some significance to certain players, but ultimately it is only a number.

Jungle Jim

Agree0 Disagree0

What about the Henrik Larson foundation?

John

Agree1 Disagree0

I agree with Jungle Jim. If we never retired it for Jinky then why would we retire it for Larsson? We'll have another no. 7 icon, hopefully sometime in the near future
Kevbhoy

Agree1 Disagree0

Agree with jungle Jim, if it wasn't retired for jimmy Johnstone then the number should NEVER be retired.

Jamie mac

Agree1 Disagree0

Larrson was never offered a contract? don't talk rubbish

Agree0 Disagree0

Make players earn it. i'd give it to hooper or ledley if the sign a new deal

Agree0 Disagree0

Pretty sure henke said he wanted a season or two in the sun.

sweden wer he said he would end his career tho

Agree0 Disagree0

If anyone was to be honoured by the retiral of the number 7 shirt it could only be Jimmy Johnstone. Henrik is one of the all time greats without a doubt but the number 7 shirt simply means the wee man. And on a broader point, retiring the number 7 for anyone would be in the same category as retiring the Hooped shirt altogether. They are both in the DNA

Agree0 Disagree0

Retire the number 7?

Anyone who thinks this, must have a very low estimation of our club.

One day there will be another Celtic forward who will score more goals for us than Larsson did. And be considered (by many) to be a better player than he was. You have my *personal guarantee* that this will happen.

And if you don't believe this is possible, you may as well pack in being a Celtic fan.

Seriously.

Celtic fan working in England and am telling u now we should sign Colin sammon of derby. seen him plenty he has improved plenty a perfect target man that we have been missing get him back up rd in e summer fast, strong chips in with his share of goals.

Believable6 Unbelievable9

U mean connor sammon? if so, no thanks, i'd prefer rhodes or austin!

celticthomas

Agree2 Disagree0

Not as the main striker, as a target man for as u say Rhodes, austin. am telling u he is a battering ram with skill he will be a great foil for our main striker, doubt he cost to much ie wages, transfer.

Agree0 Disagree1

Something fishy about this post. Sign Sammon. He chips in with the goals. Cods sake. DH

he is a guy I have often thought about as well. He has the ability to rag doll defenders, or at least 'occupy' centre halves physically. I think he has a limit on his technical ability - and that limit might be a wee bit below what Celtic are looking for. He stood out for me in the spl - a good test would be: does he get picked for the Republic team. if he gets a cap, he might be worth looking at closely. Jean-Pierre

Probably get slated for this, but just seen Lenny say he intends to speak to Paddy about a new contract. For me we need to move him on and free up the wages. The boy has talent but has no stamina and will never be a first team regular.

CeltStu

Believable28 Unbelievable5

No thanks time to move on never fit and will be just another wage hanging about for poss another 2-3 years c'mon lennon get a younger fitter man in

Agree1 Disagree0

I nearly wet masel when I seen this last night on sly teletext. I can't believe it, why would lenny want to keep dead wood on the books? He has played only a few games under lenny but lenny thinks he deserves a new contract we have youth that could do better than paddy.

Agree1 Disagree1

Personally, I would love to see McCourt stay at the club, he's a player that actually loves this club, maybe not the best player, if he Improves his fitness I think he can be Important in SPL, Not Europe though sorry Paddy you just can't cut it in the big games but still Love you man!

Agree0 Disagree0

Aye, a new contract for the canteen lady?

MgC

Agree0 Disagree0

The only reason I see for it is so some fans stay happy, the people who sing don't sell McCourt is to blame and just because he is Irish. I had a feeling this would happen because some fans would just give them big headaches if we sold him and yelling at the club, I hate if we do sign him for he would have been gone years ago as he is not onceltics level even at youth level. So when people start complaining about how we don't sign anyone you can say thank you to all the don't sell McCourt people who just made us waste money on a guy

Agree0 Disagree2

I would rather see McGeough play than McCourt.

Agree1 Disagree2

His times up, time to move him on,

Ska bhoy

Agree1 Disagree1

Lenny said nothing of the sort. what he did say was that he would be talking to paddy and his representatives. doesn't mean to say he'll be offered a contract. I think lenny will thank paddy for all his efforts but explain that he does not see his future with celtic, and tell him he'll do everything he can to find him a new club. lenny's greatest attribute is his man-management and this is why he'll do the gentlemanly thing and give paddy his due when his contract ends.

Agree0 Disagree0

As an Irish man I would of loved paddy to do well at celtic and was all on for giving him a further chance, and again a further chance the following year in the hope he would come good, but time to move on paddy, good luck at your next club and all the very best big man, HH Goreybhoy
P. S should of kept niall mcginn

Agree0 Disagree0

If Lennon hand Paddy a new contract then God only knows what is going on in his head. He turns as fast as a submarine, loses the ball completely and no longer has that element of surpirse about him. SPL defenders have got wise to his dipping of the shoulder. We need to move on. Release and don't look back!

Fergiebhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

Would love to see him given a run till the end of season, think he could play cent mid he has a good eye for a pass. Cb

Agree0 Disagree0

He is more than likely on a low wage anyway. u have any info ed?- if we do sign him then we need to loan him somewhere for 6 months and make sure he plays. when we get him back we will know if he is ever going to make it but its only worth it if he's on a low wage!

Mk bhoy {Ed007's Note - McCourt's wages will be in the £6-8k a week bracket. I'm not sure off the top of my head how many contract's he has had with us (I'm using my phone just now) as that will affect his wages.}

With all the talk of attendances this season is it just me who thinks the club should be doing more for the fans to bring them back. I would say things like kids under 12 go free when with an adult or big half time shows. does anyone else have any ideas on how we get back to the days gone by when we had pretty much a full house week in week out?

MurphyBhoy

Believable14 Unbelievable1

Pricing the major issue- man with two kids needs to spend near on half a weeks take home if he wants to go.

It's inaccessible to many, we have thousands upon thousands of fans but empty seats, why?

The cost is too great, and out of reach of too many. Clearly no longer the "working mans game", not saying this is celtic, specifically, to blame. We all know where the blame lies.

I saw something interesting last night which sums up how fans in Britain, generally, are treated. The cheapest seat at the emirates is £94, the cheapest season ticket at bayern Munich is €96.

Jamie mac

Agree1 Disagree0

Jamie Mac I wonder if you are right, if you look at the league cup game's at home and they were only £15 the stadium was half empty. Don't think a half time show would help, maybe wrong. If we are being honest team's coming and parking the bus doe's not help but then again some of the performance's from the team leave a lot to be desired but I will still be there. I remember when we were winning nothing.
Tambhoy

Agree2 Disagree0

Jamie mac hit the nail. the pricing structure is way out of line with the product. In cold hard terms Say £25 for 90 minutes entertainment, movies are around £8 for the same time. In the movies you are warm and get a comfortable seat, food, that is usually pricey to be fair, that is warm and edible and you pretty much know what you are going to get for your money. Wages in football in Scotland are ridiculously high, small basic with big bonus for targets met is the way forward up here. As for half time, how about this? Sell tickets for say £2. 00, five are picked at random to have a penalty shoot out at half time against a Celtic keeper. The winner of this then gets to meet Lenny and the Bhoys post match to get a top signed? I would pay it, no doubt a few people would enter their kids as well. One thousand fans paying this, with no outlay from Celtic would bring in £2k per home game. Not a lot of money but used wisely in a PR scheme would be good business. green jhedi

Agree1 Disagree1

Both spot on, the working mans game is no longer for the working man! I remember reading something about the prices for arsenal a few weeks back, even a ref said to the players to go say thanks to the fans for coming, after all they had paid 65 pounds to get into the stadium ( shocking and ridiculous ) all footie teams abuse their fans and continue to get away with it as so many are so loyal to their football team. I didn't know that a season ticket was so cheap for Bayern Munich, that's just shows the class of the team as a whole, from tea lady to board members. to acknowledge the fans in this way and to take into consideration finances for a family tryin to live a life as well as support a football team is just amazing. un-heard of on the british isles! Would only ever hear of this with lower division teams and at that we don't hear it enough! Surely now celtic have a hefty bank balance, we can do something to help the fans for next season to insure we have a full house for most games, all I want is for the working man to be able to go to the footie again withou having to worry about where Weds or Thursdays dinner is coming from if they were to attend a game at the weekend.

Agree2 Disagree0

Although I agree with getting more people in the gates but both your idea would cost more money than make.

the best we can hope for is the ticket prices are slightly reduced and the fans come out in a few more numbers to cover the cost.

unfortunately there is no straight forward answer or million pound idea to fix it

Agree0 Disagree0

Prices are the problem because of the current climate. Most fans have spent hundreds more because of the european campaign this year. No one ever bothers for the league cup, its a bad example. Maybe in the past we have had a few thousand more but the difference isn't major. We have played Raith Rovers and St. Johnstone at home this year in the league cup, and Arbroath in the Scottish Cup. Hardly exciting ties are they. Its the SPL attendances that are about 10-15 thousand down and the reason is between 5 and 10 thousand didn't renew they're season ticket and now won't pay for match day tickets at the prices. Mainly because they have forked out nearly £200 for Helsinki, Helsingborg's, the 3 game Champions League package and Juventus.

Its not rocket science.

Lower season ticket prices by £75-£100 next season, more will purchase them and they will make up a fair bit of the shortfall on matchday profits. Also give a guarantee that season ticket holders will get the first qualifier @ Celtic Park for free and will get first option on all Champions League games.

Personally I would be letting kids under 15 in for a few pounds from now until the end of the season. 10-12 for adults.

Agree3 Disagree0

Cheap or free tickets for schools
and maybe a section in the oldco section for a kids zone with comps and entertainment for the youngsters after all thier the paying customers of the future
thommyj

Agree4 Disagree0

The nature of our game changed when games became ticket only fans no longer attend games on impulse. I have had a season ticket since mid eighties, I now have 3 kids but can't just take them with me without arranging to swap my seat for another part of the ground with available seats I go to all weekend games but sometimes struggle with mid week as juggling work and child care can be difficult I imagine its the same for a lot of women fans. Even if the club wanted to don't suppose they would be allowed to open a section of the ground as pay at the gate.

Agree1 Disagree0

I think everyone would agree that ticket prices must come down a bit to try to attract back the working man who needs half his wages just for a day out at the football. GJ your half time penalty's idea sounds very plausible and wouldn't cost the club apart from a few ticket books. Although the 2k a game you stated wouldn't be anywhere near enough to buy players or even their wages it could however be put towards the development of youth players. I also like the idea of giving free tickets to schools maybe every week a different school from within 5 miles of celtic park.

MurphyBhoy

Agree1 Disagree0

Drop the prices. My season ticket costs £609. This works out at just over £30 per match, which I think is ridiculous to watch a game of football, especially for the League we play in. My son is 10 and his season ticket cost £129. We have cup games and European games to pay for on top of this. I'm not sure if I can afford this next season.

Agree0 Disagree0

I unfortunattely had to give up my season book last year due to 3 kids & work slowing down, and tried to buy tickets for me & my sons over festive period, but could only buy tickets for 3 games packages.
I don't know if this happens all season but I think that doesn't help, also at the spartak game, a fella I know bought a ticket on the night of game and got charged £45 for restricted view which pi55ed him off from going back.

Agree0 Disagree0

Heres an idea, how about the whole playing squad giving up one weeks wages to say thanks to the fans! I know its laughable isn't it. I wonder how much income that would generate? Half a million notes maybe, who knows, but it would be a very nice gesture. Seriously when men from humble backgrounds can earn 20K GBP a week after tax why can't they see their way clear to helping out fans many who come from the same social group where they themselves started from; or maybe its all rich kids who make the grade these days. for sure smethoing has to be done because once the fan base gets out of the habit of watching live football it is very difficult to entice them back. barry the janny

been reported that dundee only sold 56 tickets for game at parkhead the morra, i'm sorry give them all their money back and give that section to school children and children groups, make a wee day out for themselves I would say that's better use than 56 away fans "

Believable13 Unbelievable2

Barry why should the 56 not attend, they have paid their money, they are certaintie's to go down unless the league's are changed, their manager has just been sacked, I say good on them. As for attendance's do you forget the empty upper tier at the home league cup game's. We should not be disparaging any club's supporter's for non attendance. Who do we think we are THEM.
Tambhoy

Agree3 Disagree0

Totally agree Barry, but I wouldn't want to stop away support from coming to Celtic park. the best way would be just cordon off lower section (of away section) for 100 Dundee supporters, then give away the remaining seats.

Agree0 Disagree0

The 56 Dundee lads making the effort in SPL football, in difficult times for their team, should be applauded, encouraged and made welcome. Good on them.

Agree1 Disagree0

In 1980's I counted the Dundee support one day. 35 of them!

Agree0 Disagree0

Don't be daft Barry, you know yourself your being daft. Well done to the 56 who are coming we need these teams and we need these types of support for wee teams otherwise we would have no one to beat. Fran

Agree0 Disagree0

Hope the 56 have a good day out atleast they want to go

paul cfc

Agree0 Disagree0

There are enough empty seats in other parts of the stadium these days for tickets to be handed out to kids without encroaching on the away support!
