I had a feeling we would of had a tough night, didn't expect for us to be beat 2-0 I thought we would win 1-0, now its an uphill task with the same squad, I don't think we will go through now, we have been average at best since cliftonville ties, our lack of movement in the market is going to come back and haunt us.

I believe they will overcome them but to be honest it should never have been a doubt. Few signings would have sorted that out. Crying out for a striker obviously but when did we last have a playmaker to sort these teams out that sit back like that. I think Lubo was the last one. I think if we got that we wouldn't b far away from bein a really gud team. Get us pirlo. Lol. Martybhoy

At a packed paradise under the floodlights as we all know bigger and far better teams have crumbled.today was a bad day at the office.on another day we'd have won that match(commons smacks bar, wee forrest should've scored.)Early goal next Wednesday and they'll rubbish themselves.100% confident we'll qualify.keep the faith.Hail Hail.PHILBHOY.

Agree1 Disagree2

Celtic board and there pampered star got what they deserved tonight. a total disgrace.

geb

Agree5 Disagree0

Well should not be in this position, we couldn't have had three easier qualifying rounds if we hand picked them and apart from the mighty Cliftonville in 270 mins of football we have scored I goal and conceded 2 against European minnows, let's face it we have been sold down the river by PL and our club is run like a corner shop.

Agree1 Disagree0

First time posting, have been looking intently at the forum. have to say this was an accident waiting to happen big time. us fans have been crying out for a playmaker and a decent striker and maybe the powers that be will dig that deeper and connect the team back up again. shocking result against a mediocre team. tezben {Ed007's Note - Welcome to the site.}

Agree1 Disagree0

Just who is going to score the goals, can't believe Lennon started biggest game of the season with an untried central defensive pair big Virgil been out injured then thrown into a game like that, as for forest what does he bring to the team poor poor shown need a new striker, play maker and no nonsense defender

Agree3 Disagree0

Hi Guys, not really happy with the result but a few things to consider.
as stated a packed house but here`s a thought the game kicks off at 7.45, that`s actually 12:45am to them given the time diff so 2 hrs from then its nearly 3am.
Get the pitch heavily watered, play fast slick footy on GRASS.
We only have to score 2 and then get to xtra time.

Can we get through? Yes of course we can.
Will we go through? It depends on attitude of the team at Celtic Park. I thought tonight some of our team coasted it, thinking they would win, wrong attitude.
I am hoping the return 7 hour flight will tire them out in Glasgow. Let us hope for a cold rainy night and hope the team are up for a battle.
We must unsettle them with our passing and movement as they are a slow team, but they are well organised and will be a danger at set pieces again. I can see them scoring at CP so we will need to win 4-1 to go through.
I predict a nervy night, especially if they score first. Timalloy

Agree0 Disagree1

I think although the players should take most of the blame for today's defeat neil lennon also has to hold his hand's up he should have got another striker in surely they would have been doing their homework on strikers for month's now. I don't think it will be so easy in the second leg for celtic to turn it around because I can see shaktar scoring which means celtic will need 4. this team although not a good outfit are extremely dangerous at set peices and throw ins and this is something you will have to be wary of if you are to stand any chance of going through

Agree1 Disagree0

That was like watching a Wimbledon v Luton game from the 80's. Primitive isn't the word, good luck to that team, if that's the way they play then fair do's, but with regards us-I said last week that this team has went from being potentially very good to average in the space of a few months and that's what happens when you try and cut corners on quality. It's a bad day when you even have the players(commons) saying we need new signings-players who could obviously take his place in the team. If we had bought the 3/4 quality players we needed/and had the money for we would have blown that team away, the players would be settled come the group stage time, and the resultant 20 million would have covered the player costs anyway, plus of course you have assets sitting in the squad! We should still scrape by this team because they are so bad, but we're not that much better so I'm far from certain. Truly unbelievable! Paul

Agree1 Disagree0

We should still be able to get through but this is a reality check in terms of where we are right now, without hooper, wanyama, and wilson we looked very ordinary. The centre backs looked disjointed and lennons decision top leave out ambrose and start with the 2 new boys really didn't work out.

Agree4 Disagree0

Think I'll have to answer this one after I've had a good nights sleep.

At the moment we need 3 goals, if they score (and there's every chance of it) that goes up to 4!

That team tonight did not have 1 goal in them never mind 3 or 4.

I might feel better tomorrow lol ~ Mrs E

Agree3 Disagree0

The fact that we wouldn't spend 5 million on a proven goal scorer could have now cost us 20 million cl money, I really hope not tho. Mick

Agree2 Disagree1

If the board put more energy and effort into making funds available for transfers than they do trying to get rid if the green brigade, we might have a team worthy to wear the hoops. Nick the tic 82

Agree2 Disagree0

Well said to all brave enough to post there real thought s after tonights shambles, we could all sit here and make excuses however the one real truth is that we have saved a fortune in wages, transferred 3 players (the spine of the team)pocketed £40million and spent a minimal amount so far.Replacements should have been in place for the 3 that left long before now.We will get the usual party line no doubt but me and many others have said money has to be spent on quality .I don't think anyone should blame Lennon for this we simply will not pay a fair price, if we had spent £5mllion on a striker so what that's only the money for Hooper gone, We should not have to pull out all the stops at the 2nd leg this tie should have been over, the board have a hell of a lot to answer for, they should remember interest in the bank does not maintain interest on the terracing and please don't try to use Sevco as an example of what might happen, the money was there and should have been spent long before now NO EXCUSES.

Agree3 Disagree0

Looks like the gamble of not shelling out for a striker until we reached the CL group stage may just have cost the club £20 million CL money when will we learn you need to invest in quality to get anywhere. Alanp

Agree3 Disagree0

To be honest if we can't beat this lot at home to progress then we don't deserve to be in the champions league or even the Europa league. Hail Hail.

Agree1 Disagree0

Hello there my fellow Celtic fans, first time on the site and I'd like to extend a massive Hail Hail to each and everyone one of yous.

Well, what can I say but that as a fan I'm absolutely embarrassed and ashamed to be a Celtic fan at this present moment in time. Why is it when Celtic are handed a golden opportunity to progress (in anything) they always seem to (in one form or another) F$%K it up?

Personally I feel that once again the Celtic Faithful have been taken for granted and as mugs by the penny pinching hierarchy of our great club (who will undoubtedly use the "look what happened to the Huns" excuse ) as an excuse not to spend any real money of any sort, even after tonight's performance, which clearly demonstrated that Celtic need an out and out Striker, creative Midfielder and an experienced center half AND THAT TAKES REAL MONEY LAWELL YOU PRAT.

As I watched today's match the first thought that sprung to mind was Basel, we took them c$%ts for granted and look what happened to us back then and as I watched today's game that same eerie feeling came over me and looked what happened.

The spine of our Championship winning team has been stripped away and replaced with? well that's a good question, with what exactly. We have a manager that literally dose not have a clue about real match winning tactics and his substitutions leave me with a "screen saver mode" expression on most occasions. The Green Bridge have been booted out of Celtic Park, so there's goes the atmosphere that has teams like Barcelona, Juventus and co raving with excitement about playing at Celtic Park.

Agree2 Disagree0

Sack the board, ., .kbarry

Agree1 Disagree0

126 years of history and still effin it up!you all think this is bad, IF WE GO OUT MR.LAWELL, THE STADIUM WILL BE A GHOST TOWN THIS SEASON!WHEN WILL WE EVER LEARN. al geri. depressed, seething and totally pissed offffffffffffffffffff.

Agree2 Disagree0

Ok Heres my take on it. Sammy is not a striker or even a half decent target man! HE IS A WINGER! Mulgrew is NOT a winger HE IS A FANTASTIC LEFT BACK! so in my humble opinion Lenny made the mistakes tonight! sorry but it true! why even start with two untried central pairing? me personally and yes I ain't no football manager would have went with tried and tested! Forster, Mathews, Lustig, Ambrose or mulgrew, Izzy, Forest, Brown, Leddley, Sammy and upfront Commons and either stockes of Balde! Also look at the Board here we should have had a new striker in long before now! Hail Hail

Agree1 Disagree0

The league we play in has a hell of a lot to do with the calibre of player we can attract.we had an offer accepted for the boy from werder Bremen but he refused to come to Scotland and can anyone really blame him.it would fit ter to find us a way out of the sub standard league we play in than changing kick off times to 5.15.on a Saturday.Talking about the game against basle, do you not remember were that defeat led us.seville.As I said in a previous post we will beat this mob and we will progress. In lennon we trust.Hail Hail.PHILBHOY.

Agree0 Disagree0

Another absolute farce of a display from the manager all the way through to nearly all the team, lennys team selection was pathetic again, why play vdick after only 16minutes of game time, and how on earth Forrest get ANY game time is a mystery, the most overated Celtic player ina decade, at best he's average, izzy was v poor, his lack of defensive ability exposed again, at best he's average at worst a nitemare, lenny had no idea how to change things tacticaly until it was to late. i'm definitely not confident we will progress after recent displays and lack of character in Europe, at the moment Celtic definitely have more money than sense. rant over COYBIG+

Agree1 Disagree0

We've been sold short this window. Simple as that. Players are being played out of position to cater for the lack of replacements, and the whole side, and club, and fans, are suffering for it. However a side worthy of CL (which I still think we can be) would put that lot to bed at home in the return leg (which i'm still very hopeful we can do.).

We bottled it last night, not just the lack of effort, missed opportunities and overall inability to muster a way to break down a team sitting back. But, for the first time in a while, I thought NL got it totally wrong.

The Elfsborg tie showed that playing Sammy up top instead of Stokes seriously limited our attacking threat - no one is making a run off the shoulders of their defenders, no one is trying to beat a man around the box to create an opening, and most of all, no one is in the box to actually get a touch and score a goal. The side just looks disjointed. Not just Sammy up top instead of playing as a winger, but Mulgrew isn't a winger either, he should be in central defence instead of Mouyokolo, who, without being too disrespectful, is not our answer to anything. NL talked up not being too 'expansive' and playing 'ugly' before the game, well he certainly delivered there.

I'll be at the game next week and that is where we have to prove ourselves. let's get Sammy, Commons and Boerrigter behind Stokes, show them what a real atmosphere is like and show them who the better team are.

As optimistically p*ssed off as ever.

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh, one more thing, UEFA should probably look into Andrei Finonchenko. No one else think that guy totally looked like he was on speed or crystal meth or something?!? With his eyes like p*ss holes in snow and his twitchy face and stretchy mouth and jaw? No wonder he was still dancing after full time. {Ed007's Note - As soon as I seen him I thought it was a coked up Phil Collins that was playing!}

Agree0 Disagree0

Look i'm as disappointed as every fan and feel let down but don't be stupid with your sack the board sh*te they have steered the club in the right direction for years now and just because they have made mistakes this time doesn't mean they can't fix it so just be a real fan a stick behind the team. Instead of acting like the other mob turning on the club as soon as things don't look good
Mark1888

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with all the above, our manager is clueless when our game is not going to plan. We pay the guts of 2m for a Striker and he wait's until we are 2-0 down with 9 min to go before sending him on! He play's a central defence pairing who have never played together and deploy's Mulgrew in midfield! Sammy, as anyone with half a brain will tell you is NOT a CF, most effective out wide when he can turn and run at them. Yet again Stokes is left clicking his heel's on the bench, the only goal threat we have due to the lack of transfer activity. Yet again I am starting to get the fear with the carry on at Parkhead, yet again the fan's are the losers, yet again we refuse to strengthen when ahead of the game!
Broken record comes to mind!

Agree1 Disagree0

Last weekends win against Aberdeen was a real display of our problems.
2 nil. A penalty and a crazy fluke.
We have a major goal scoring situation.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing but should have done a Man City and got striker in early instead of too late.
I think misgamble by the moneymen.

Agree0 Disagree0

Disappointed at the way we lost the goals can't even contemplate not going through think we should play a 3-5-2 stretch and get behind them and try to put away the chances we will defo create

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think that we actually played bad football. We just couldn't defend. There is a panic across our back four that is affecting our midfield and forster. It gives other teams a lift when they sense that fear.
As for the return leg I see it this way. A few players need to have a hard look at themselves and give us a performance. If they can bet us 2-0 in Kazakhstan then we can do the same and then some in Glasgow.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with the panic situation. The game was ours early on until Forster gave the ball away. It rattled us. From then on we were terrible and conceded a sloppy goal. Took time to get back into it, kept most the ball but still didn't look confident at all when being closed down by Collins!

Mark1888, forgive our frustration but who should we turn on? We should have built on last seasons squad not weaken it. This whole philosophy of buying young and selling on is absolutely pointless unless it's reinvested into the team (as PROMISED). We'll all be Celtic supporters regardless, but I for one want to support a good football team on the park, not the pockets of major shareholders.

Agree with most of the points about our abysmal performance last night. However I agree with the many who are laying the blame at Lenny's door, bad tactics, bad team selection, inability to change things till too late. So with that in mind why would we demand the spending of huge sums, risky in these times, for players for him to mismanage?

Any one have any team news for tonight?
Samcfc {Ed007's Note - The starting XI is:

Forster; Lustig, Mouyokolo, Van Dijk, Izaguirre; Forrest, Brown, Ledley, Mulgrew; Commons, Samaras

Believable7 Unbelievable5

Forrest, Commons and Sammi? Looks like lenny is trying to finish this tonight. Mulgrew and Forrest are worries for me, but they could win it as well oddly enough! Do we have enough strength in midfield against a team of bruisers? With this line up we need to keep things tight and be focused. green jhedi

Agree0 Disagree0

I really didn't see Van Dijk starting due to lack of games, I've been looking forward to seeing him play. Hope him and Mouyokolo go on to be a great partnership at the back. Still going for 4 nil to the tic.mark

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks Ed, don't suppose you'd know if the Finnbogason deal has any life left in it? Do you think a good result tonight could spark a bid?
Samcfc {Ed007's Note - I've always felt any deal for Finnbogason hinged on CL qualification Sam. If and when we qualify I would expect more money to be available to bring in 1 or 2 new strikers and possibly another attacking MF player.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks Ed
Samcfc

Agree0 Disagree0

Well that was a disgrace. Well beaten, no excuses. Shown up for the avarage team we are. The board can give themselves a pat on the back for not signing a striker and putting us on the verge of missing out on the group stage.
On a brighter note, we're still looking good for winning the balance sheet trophy!

Delbhoy

Agree4 Disagree0

The current midfield could not split a meal between
Them never split a defence. James Forrest is a mon-event on the Big stage. As for the rest CL does not seam to be high on their priority list going by the display tonight.

Mick R

Agree3 Disagree0

Never seen such a shambles. Samaras disinterested and totally isolated, not sure he moved once. Forrest is lightweight with a poor touch, the two new centre halves were about as commanding as Julian Clarey.

Overall - utter disgrace. Hope the club repays the hardcore fans who went out there for that.

That would be cheaper than another player so they may go for that.

Agree4 Disagree0

Green jhedi called it spot in.

More strength in a bowl of soup.

Utter disgrace. Tactics all wrong, with absolutely no goal threat.

Playing a better side would have been cringe worthy.

Agree4 Disagree0

Well then even more evidence for the board we need to spend some money for someone who can unlock teams commons to be fair tried but he needs a hand as for Forrest thought he was a winger spent more time inside than on the wing why does NL like him so much.

Agree1 Disagree0

Maybe P L loves his balance sheet trophy. Maybe he's happy to go into Europa league. With no additions. Make 6-7 million. No outgoings on players +salaries. So he'll say that as breaking even

Agree0 Disagree0

defence that can't defend, midfield that can't create and attack that are non existent. well done on the team building, usual celtic from a position of strength the have become a shambles. at least 5 in that team that shouldn't be near a celtic top. sc

Agree2 Disagree0

Forster 2m; Lustig FREE, Mouyokolo FREE, Van Dijk 2.6m, Izaguirre 600k; Forrest FREE, Brown 4.4m in 2007, Ledley FREE, Mulgrew FREE; Commons 300k, Samaras 2m

Im no accountant but if this is what we put on the park we shouldn't be expecting just to show up and win. Izaguirre has been clearly found out 1 good season and now a liability. Sammy "Cult Hero" imposter is what he should be called.
SC

Agree0 Disagree0

Mouyokolo and Van Dijk who haven't really played together and Van Dijk just back from injury playing only 14mins is a big No from me. Reminds me of Ambrose coming back to play against Juve. Samaras is not a striker he is a better winger. These are mistakes Lennon should not be making at this level and he should be experienced enough now to know that

Forster

Lustig
Van Dijk
Mulgrew
Izaguirre

Matthews
Brown

Commons
Samaras

Can play as 4-4-2. or shift lustig into the centre and Matthews back into wing back position and playe 5-3-2

Not a terrible player, but not as exciting as I would have hoped for. Never quite lived up to his 'promise' but has been one of the championships better defenders. Obviously had a tough time trying to keep Reading up and now has seemingly found himself out of favour. Used to play cb but got moved to rb, I think he'd look decent in a back 5 which we do go for
