Does anyone agree that getting Deadly Joe Ledley on a new contract would be one of our best potential "signings" in this window?

Like Hooper/Sami etc players shouldn't be allowed to go into the final year of their contract, unless of course the club and player are going to call it quits. As I say until I'm blue in the face, - everything we do gives people room to talk. When they get to 2 years on their contract it's time to call a spade a spade and get a definitive answer with regards where they see their future long term, if it's not with us then sell them. I was really expecting big things this window (after the outgoings) but the silence has been truly deafening -to the point I can hardly believe it(even by our standards) we have got rid of 10 players since Jan, inc our 4 best, and brought in pretty much players for the future and a lefty that we needed anyway. Contempt is the word that springs to mind, but it works 2 ways, just a pity it's taken me 30 years to finally realize. Everybody I know is off the same mind, we would be as well throwing our money out the window, for all the thanks you get. Paul

This post takes me back to dark days when Celtic would hail the return from injury of any player as 'being like a new signing', because they didn't actually have any new signings.
I agree Ledley is a top player though and must be signed up.

Probably the best kept secret in British football. Realise a lot of fans do rate him but there's a lot who don't realise how lucky we are to have him. Said it a good few times but I think him and Brown are going to form an amazing partnership this year. Daviebhoy77

Agree1 Disagree0

Dunno what Iain is smoking but Joe Ledley is a class player and we will do well to keep him away from EPL.

Spot on Paul. Too often do we let good players contracts run down. Far too often.

Agree1 Disagree0

Iain " NO " why?

I hate it when clubs say getting one of their current players to sign a new contract has been a great signing. Yes I agree it's extremely important especially in Joe's case but saying he's a great signing is just trying to distract supporters from the lack of a signing. This is more of a general comment rather than aimed at celtic.

YeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeS. jK

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with Iain, as much as i'm glad to see Joe signed up the timing of this being discussed seems to be to cover up the fact we have dithered over bringing in a striker and CH despite losing the spine of the team.

Sorry Chris, to answer your question I would either get him on a new contract or sell him. I like Ledley-he's a good player, but he seems like a great guy(totally selfless) which is a bit of a rarity these days, my only problem is our midfield are all too similar. Since the maestro(McStay for our younger readers) we've really only had Lubo and Ki who have played with their head up, Ki was a little inconsistent I know, but we couldn't get him out the door quick enough(another one with only a year on his contract) I would offer 3-5 million for Mark Noble at West Ham, I've always liked him and think he's wasted in that team, he doesn't get enough freedom, and isn't an Allardyce signing/type off signing-he's obviously far more direct! Cheers, Paul

Agree0 Disagree0

We must tie up guys like Ledley, while they are happy at the club and keen to stay.
I include Brown, Mathews, Commons, Stokes (if he screws the nut) and Samaras.
This should not divert from the fact that we need to replace the quality we lose.
Contract negotiations should be ongoing p with all our good players and if a player stalls or has a change of heart - like Hooper and others - then we make sure we do not sell until we have a similar, or better replacement signed up.

Agree1 Disagree1

Yeah Iain with the 2 I's at it again. Although ledley resigning shouldn't be used as a smokescreen for not getting the players we need, ., .kbarry

Agree0 Disagree0

Without a doubt! Give the man a new contract to keep him sweet. Big season for him. As previous posters have said, this shouldn't be regarded as a "new signing". This should be a standard procedure! We all knew Hooper and Wanyama would be gone so why were replacements not already in line for the start of the window to give them time to gel with the team? Everyone knew we needed to replace our stars AND strengthen, apart from the board obviously. It's all gone far too quiet. Although in saying that, if we manage to sign Finnbogason it will lift the team and supporters. Hopefully add a pacey CB to replace wilson and keep Forster and all should be good!

Agree0 Disagree0

JJ Stokes?
i'll hand my season ticket back next year if they give in to his demands.

Iain

I think we should all calm down. Who can deny this, if a player decides to leave; he will leave! If not by club consent he will engineer a move with the help of his agent. Sammy/Broony are examples of guys who DON'T want I leave, I believe Ledley is the same. Let the manager and his team run the club and keep the faith. Anyone ho wants to leave will leave, they won't finish the club. Believe in the hoops. SB

I heard celtic ate looking at Byron Moore from Crewe Alexandria not sure how true it is as my mate is pretty unreliable. Glad your op went well ed mate. By the way have you heard of any one in the pipeline cheers mate.

That is likely the limit of ambition our board would show.

Celtic's chances of signing Finnbogason have increased as rivals Augsburg have instead signed Bobadilla from Basel.

Believable18 Unbelievable18

More likely we'll not increase bid as only team in for him. If we get into CL expect increased bid otherwise This saga will end with Celtic signing 2 journeymen on loan to fill a gap for the Europa league and finnbogason will go on to score goals and sell for 10mill. steven Fletcher all over again. 20 mill in sales, 20 mill in CL revenue we've reduced the squad and we still struggle to strengthen team. current squad WILL struggle against borat united or spartak moustache whatever they are called. Wake up Celtic!

Here's what Ally told his friends at the Daily Record at the time.

"I have personally invested in the club, " said McCoist. "I think the best way to put it is that I have bought shares in the club as a fan, I haven't bought them specifically as the manager. "

Charles Green would be proud of the bratveck Ally had to come out with that one as he got the shares for free

Believable16 Unbelievable4

Not free! That is slanderous against the sneaky pie scoffer. 1p each while the real 'fans' paid 70p. Ally's snout is in the same money trough as Whyte, Green, Smith etc etc etc. So many snouts, not much money left to go round. How long before they turn and canabalise each other? Enjoy the show!

Read that Crltic are interested in Teemu Pukki who plays for Schalke. 23 year old Finnish striker with a really good scoring record

Believable21 Unbelievable16

I hope we're not interested in him. Apart from one average season for Helsinki during the 2010/11 season his goalscoring stats are atrocious for a centre forward!
It's not often I'd ever be silly enough to say it but in this case I'll make an exception: I could do better myself!

Hail Hail
ChrisBhoy

Agree1 Disagree1

Think you might have over celebrated when we went up 2-1 earlier bud :-). The guys scoring record is utterly abysmal- great however at Finnish u21s. Unfortunately he's never cut it moving up from that level. From what I’ve seen he looks suspiciously moulded into the gaffer pet cast. It seems from his videos that he is fast, direct.can score some good goals. At best if this guy is to sign we'll have a punt at competition for Forrest, doing all the ‘game changing’ things the wee man does week in week out, club and country.
I hope this is nonsense and that rattle in my ear is just the tinnitus and not the noise of the biscuit tin lid

Agree1 Disagree2

Been saying for wks boys check out johannsson of az Alkmar this buoy can score about 25 goals in 38games and still only 22.

Agree0 Disagree0

How is his goal scoring crop he played 1091 mins which is abou 11/12 games and scored 8 goals and three assists

Agree0 Disagree0

Still say we got the goal scorers here and no need to waste good money just now, next window is plenty time.

Agree0 Disagree3

Who is the scorer we have? please don't say stokes!

geb

Agree0 Disagree0

Who is this nameless clown with the 'next window' patter.

If we get in groups whos scoring the goals? breaking down opppnents in the middle of the park and making strong defensive tackles and blocks? what I've just described to you is the backbone of the team, that has been ripped out and needs replaced. We don't have a champs league standard side.

How is it plenty til next window?

King Erse

Ps
Are you lawell in disguise

Agree0 Disagree0

According to few German websites celtic have made an offer for this guy!

Agree0 Disagree0

Well I said it last week or at beginnig of the week that our interest in alfred had gone because of the fee, this is just proof that we have moved onto a cheaper option! Shocking celtic get the finger out and get the boy ALL the celtic fans want! And as for the post who said about we got the strikers already, again who are u referring to? Please don't say sammy or stokes! Cause if u did, would prove u don't know that much about the game. Balde looks decent but he's not going to be our main striker, we need more bodies in we look very average at the minute and I'm not happy about it, we should be miles ahead of the rest in scotland, but yet we seem to be getting weaker than the rest!

S

Agree0 Disagree0

To S what teams in scotland are stronger than celtic, please name them.jimbhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

Had a wee look online at this guy. May not be as free-scoring as the OP suggests but could turn out to be someone we can turn into a player. Been at Seville and Schalke - don't think he will be a total joker. If we get him cheap enough could be a steal. Still want Capueno and Finnbogason as well tho.

Understand why everyone is getting jumpy just think we are waiting till we qualify to get real quality in, instead of average squad players.

Also we have to tie up Ledley - if he left I would join in with the questioning of why we are sitting on the cash. HH

Agree0 Disagree0

A Scandinavian Kevin Doyle, not good enough!!

Iain

Agree0 Disagree0

Pukki bid rejected, i'm glad because he's mince. That's pukki, finbogasson, Doyle we've now missed out on. We've lost lassad, Miki and hoops and replaced with balde (jury still out there). Sammi is a winger, short memories of his time as a striker for us. went 9 months without scoring and then scored 2 the next year. Stokes needs a Hooper to be effective otherwise he's too quiet. We need finbog, another creative mid and a possibly sitting mid. Happy to go with van djik, moyloko, efe and Charlie at CB.whod U have.
My list.
Finbogasson
Catermolle (card a plenty, protects defence)
James Morrison (wba)

Agree0 Disagree0

Ridiculous comment Iain. I like the sound of this guy. dopeydavey

Agree0 Disagree0

We haven't lost out on Finbogasson yet, we do right play hard ball with what we'll pay, this isn't a computer game. Asfor the suggestions above, Morrison would be good competition on the right, but Cattermole would be a disaster, the lad was banned out of every pub in Teesside before he left for Wigan, if he can't handle the attention in a town like the Boro he'd never last at either OF team.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Aug 2013 12:57:25
He's actually a decent striker his stats show total appearances but most have been as a sub as huntelaar is the main striker at Schalke.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sound remark Iain we have to stop shopping at bottom end of the market just because a club asks for a fair price for a player. The spine of the team needs replaced and a new deal for Ledley asap.We could fall at the next C/L hurdle then it is all to late we should be pushing the boat out for what is required we have the money, I don't want to see this all go belly up although I fear it could. We scraped by Elfsborg remember.
