I tuned in to talkshit this afternoon while driving and they (Hawksby and Jacob) were bumping their gums as to how wrong it was for teams to parachute out of the Champions League and into the Europa League. No mention of how obscene it was that countries can have 4-5 teams in the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE even although they are not champions of their association. Completely avoided THAT and the fact that it is all about MONEY.

just to add to these type iff comment from the media , liverpool got a great result tonight 7-0 and the englush media are saying amazing performance, superb, all the other accolades that go along with a result like this and imo they deserve the praise but not one person saying how bad spartak where and all the other crap they said about celtic after psg and munich games! no wonder i love to see english teams get pumped in europe.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed0333's Note - Or maybe Liverpool were just too good for Spartak and made them look ordinary? And I think it’s fairly evident outside the SPL Celtic aren’t really that good. Correct me if I’m wrong didn’t you lose to PSG and Munich and didn’t set the world on fire with your performances?

06 Dec 2017 22:31:31
truth is tho, Liverpool could go out on Sat/ Sun and get beat by West Brom, Watford, CP etc although they are clearly a "bigger team" than all of those.

06 Dec 2017 22:46:13
I’ll support anyone who’s playing an English team! Love nothing better than seeing those arrogant ***** getting pumped! None of them will win the CL this year and that’s with 5 of them in the last 16! And your first mistake tiny tim was listening to that garbage at all! Let’s face it anybody who employs Barton to talk about football can’t be taken seriously!

Here Ed 033333333 did you fall out with the three button on your computer 😂😂 or get your finger stuck?

{Ed0333's Note - once I started tapping the three button I couldn’t stop myself

07 Dec 2017 06:18:17
Yeh, thanks Ed 033333 for reminding us we have of the lowest budgets for any Champions league team where as English Prem teams have squillions to squander. It's not a level playing field and the gap gets wider every year. If you lot down in Engerlund hadn't got your phoney TV deals you would be playing second fiddle to the other big leagues. We get slated up here for having a huge advantage due to our budget but that's fine, we accept we are too good for Scottish football but the arrogance of your typical Prem supporter is staggering though. Do you believe Crystal Palace or Everton are a bigger club than Celtic with regards to fan base? I don't. I'm not particularly bothered about your over inflated cash rich league but if we were invited in, we would be one of the biggest clubs in the prem, that's a fact and I also think that's what terrifies the PL chairmen. Add to that your cash, the appeal of playing to full houses at a bouncing CP every second week and our veciforous away support, we could attract massive players to play for us. I think we would do quite well thank you very much.
All this is academic though, we are where we are and that's that. We did enough over two legs to get third spot in a group with two of the best teams currently playing in Europe with our wee 'diddy' team. That's fine by me. We are Celtic and we are the greatest club in the world! (in my humble opinion)

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - there are a number of teams with lower budgets than you, Maribor for instance. If you can't even get simple stuff like that right, how can anyone take the rest of your nonsense seriously? You aren't in the English Prem, so you are not as big worldwide to a TV audience, sadly that is what matters more than a proper fanbase in the modern era. No point even discussing 'what if you get in the English Prem' as you simply are not going to be allowed to get in there. Not only would you need the agreement of the Premier League, Football League, SFA and the English FA, you would then need UEFA to agree to be eligible to compete in Europe, if you then qualified.}

07 Dec 2017 09:19:24
I’ve always thought that was a pipe dream anyway getting to epl, tbh, it’s only the last ten years the money has really started to ruin football in Europe, before that Porto and Monaco competed in a final, sadly this will prob never happen again, I’d like to see teams from the top 5 countries compete against themselves and leave them to it, then teams like PSV Celtic Anderlecht Ajax Benfica Porto Steau Dynamo Kiev etc could all have a chance of winning tournament, a much more even playing field, and the top euro comp. can just let real Barcelona Munich Paris and whatever English team has the most money at the time play one another until their hearts content.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Dec 2017 10:14:30
totally totally agree we will never get into the English and Welsh Premier League, never.

If you had £100 in your pocket and someone you dislike walked up and just asked nicely for you to share that - would you. Not a charity case, or for any service.

Yeovil think one day they will get into the E&WPL, so why would they vote to give a bigger team a chance at that spot.

It just simply will not happen.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Dec 2017 10:18:35
Cjb a don't think that'll be out the question, uefa would certainly love that. A European league is our only way out of Scotland if that's the route the board would consider.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Dec 2017 10:23:02
also a funny observation.

When the Chinese league suddenly started offering ridiculous money for average PL players, the bum squeaking in the E&WPL was audible up here.

Went from best league in the world to "most competitive" and other buzzy words like that.

Did Everton not get pumped 5 - 1 at home by the mighty Atalanta you know the giants of Italian football. didn't hear all the drama attached with the heaviest defeat at home by a European lightweight, talk about Embarrassing for the English League. Rather lose to a Fantastic side. Maybe if Celtic draw them in the Europa if possible this can be settled.

I thought Rodgers got it spot on yankin Sinclair and Posh Boy at half time. One thing I thought he got wrong was young French lad should have started after his hat trick at weekend. I would also have played Ajer and still think Boyata is Effes twin.

Believable2 Unbelievable2

06 Dec 2017 20:59:08
Last game against Anderlecht, Boyata was arguably our best player and I am sure that coupled with the fact how poor Ajer was in hist last European appearance.

It is easy to say Ntcham should have played instead of Armstrong, after the match but Rodgers played the team who thought would get the result. Unfortunately, too many under performed and Anderlect played well.

We seem to have a lot of players who are not playing as well as they were last season.
Dembele and Roberts have been very injury prone this year, whilst the likes of Armstrong, and Sinclair have been well below the levels we saw previously.
I'm hoping that this break in January might be what is needed to give the players a rest, and also to help some of the injuries to get cleared up.

Ed, in the Europa League is it possible to draw a team in last 32 that has also fallen out the Champions League? Or are the teams in different pots? Would love a game VS Dortmund! HH. Thanks in advance 👍.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - It's an open draw where the seeded teams play the unseeded and the only stipulations are that teams from the EL same group or the same FA cannot be drawn against each other.
Dortmund are also unseeded so we can't get them, so far we can get AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, CSKA Moscow, Lazio, RB Leipzig, RB Salzburg, Sporting Lisbon or Villareal.
Celtic, Dortmund, Napoli, Nice and Spartak Moscow are all the unseeded teams so far with Atalanta, Braga, Dynamo Kyiv, Lazio, Lyon, Ostersund, Partizan Belgrade, Real Sociedad, Steaua București, Viktoria Plzen and Zenit Saint Petersburg still to have their seeding decided.}

06 Dec 2017 20:20:45
Rough calculation Er there is about one in three of the seeds I would not want and about three in the still to be decided so we have a one in two chance of getting a tough draw a lot of quality in their and teams taking it far more serious now that it has CL entry to the winner IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - There's some tough draws in there but what about tackling Gattuso's AC Milan?}

06 Dec 2017 20:57:10
Why not he couldn't tackle a fish 🐟 supper in his playing days and he would get it tight at Parkhead 😁👍.

Agree0 Disagree1

06 Dec 2017 20:42:08
I’d take that draw ED! Few tough teams in there but we can take comfort in none of them are as good as PSG or Bayern 🙈🤣🤣.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I'd rather see us go out to a team like Milan even 4-2 on aggregate than go out to someone like Ostersund on the away goals rule with an o.g. which is our usual luck.}

06 Dec 2017 23:45:52
Milan haven't won the serie A since 2011 and haven't been in the top three in the last 4-5 years. They're a team in decline. It must have been embarrassing for Gattuso to lose his first game in charge of them to Benevento but who knows if he can improve them between now and february after all BR lost his first competitive game in charge of Celtic and look what he has done since. That said I don't think there is any easy draw and I would certainly take Milan also because living in Italy I have friends who support Milan and the banter would be good and i still keep them going about Dida's antics. Mind you Donnarumma, if he will still be at Milan is a top class goalkeeper. Disagree with the comment above however that Gattuso couldn't tackle a fish supper as I actually liked him (when he played for Milan)

Agree1 Disagree3

{Ed0333's Note - Gattuso is the type of guy you want to be in your group on a night out. I liked him as a player also he was a warrior.

07 Dec 2017 10:20:33
Donjim they never lost to that team it was 2-2. Still embarrassing tho considering that was their first point in 16 games.

Hi boys. So on the Liverpool page we've started a thread about a charity football match in the summer of 2018, held in the midlands.
Eds 1 and 2 will be the arm chair managers of the two teams in which we will aim to live stream the match on the sites.
There will be a cut off after the first 50 entries, at which point the usernames will be passed onto the eds for them to pick their teams (15 each)
It will be £35 per player, so we raise over a thousand pounds for the eds charities.
If interested, please email benjaminallen1991@hotmail.co.uk and include

06 Dec 2017 20:15:04
Hi Eds did u see BRs interview post match last night it's the first time I seen him not answer a question before when was asked about the gulf in financies between us and other so called lesser Europian clubs his response was that's not for tonight. First time I've seen BR fluster could this be a sign for us in regards to the way we will be shopping in Jan and not spending as much as he wants too?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Rodgers knew the financial constraints he would need to work with. I think people are trying to read something else from the obvious disappointment at the result and performance. It isn't even a year since Rodgers signed a four-year contract and every target that was set is on course to be met, European football after Christmas, defend the League Cup and have a healthy lead in the league AND we've kept the unbeaten run going to 67 domestic matches.}

06 Dec 2017 23:05:09
It was good to see that wae BR and from what I read from CG that the players got the message. My question to you ED is what if any new players do u think may come in this Jan?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - The only one I'd say is a certainty is a CB probably to replace Sviatchenko. Would we need another midfielder if Armstrong left in January?}

07 Dec 2017 09:17:07
I don't think we need anyother midfielders we definitely need CB but the rest just need to wake up and if needing a rest use the squad players we have surely give them a run will help the team. Reports coming out today say no big spending for us in Jan but do we need to?

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Dec 2017 11:20:51
For all those who say they don't want us in the champions league I would like to ask this.
Where would we be without it?
Would we have a manager of the calibre we have at the moment?
Would we be miles ahead of the rest of the league?
Would we be able to attracted the sponsorship we do?

Believable2 Unbelievable2

06 Dec 2017 12:19:58
I dread to think where we would be without CL cash. Look at our budget with it. Imagine our budget without it. No one likes being thumped in the CL, we need to make 2 or 3 quality additions so that we are able to atleast compete against clubs of similar stature, and by that i mean the likes of Anderlecht, Benfica, Ajax etc. We will never compete against the likes of PSG unless and Arab comes along and throws endless amounts of cash at the club.

Agree1 Disagree0

06 Dec 2017 12:38:57
What I find a bit strange (admittedly from ignorance) is that no matter how much money we generate our transfer budget does not seem to change and our profits don't change by as much as our increased revenue.

This makes me wonder what happens to the extra cash generated from CL qualification?

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Dec 2017 12:37:23
Valid points bud, im just getting sick of watching us getting tonked, i've always said europa was our level and hope the fans still pack it out on these matches. I think we would be miles ahead even without champs league dosh tbh.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Dec 2017 13:22:42
Stan petrov good post as usual. See some of the bhoys think europa is our level. I don't think we sre good enough even at that level. Better teams than Anderlech await. For as much as i love Brendan, he is being found out tactically at European level just as much as the players. Even if we added 4 quality players who are capeable of going straight into the first team, if we set up to play these European teams toe to toe we are going to get beaten. Tactics need to change but BR only wants to play one way however its keeping us unbeaten in SPL so what do i know. For the first time i saw a bit of "i don't know what else i can do " in the BR interview after the game. Maybe Brendan is thinking about a move himself if not end of this season then certainly at the end of the next. He looked hurt last night.

Agree3 Disagree1

06 Dec 2017 13:27:56
Rodgers the reason the things don't change is because we spend more when we have it.
Bhoy wonder how would we be miles ahead exactly?
Sponsor money would drop so it wouldn't just be champions league money we loose.
With all that money gone we would be making cuts at every level of the club.
Playing staff coaches the lot would all be down graded to the point that the other Scottish clubs would be right behind us again.
Never mind even Europa league because we'd never compete in that either.

Agree0 Disagree1

06 Dec 2017 14:54:27
It's down to the players as soon as they cross 'the white line' as they say because no matter how much motivation or instruction is given pre-match it's the same players that freeze and panic every time in these CL games and most of them were here before BR.
There is no doubt he has added quality and improved the attitude, form and work-rate of certain players since his arrival; however, we are still making the same mistakes (unable to make a simple pass and giving the ball away) as well as showing nerves and fear from KO. I do think, however that BR might have made changes sooner when he saw how poor we were playing and who were rank?
The frustration of the support, manager and players is obvious, but the attitude and confidence needs adjustment, alternating between domestic and European matches or we will never find consistency or any success. The good news, is we are able to build on this after the New Year in the Europa and we shall see?
One thing that crossed my mind is that, maybe the defeats in the CL are helping the unbeaten run domestically - law of averages and all that - although the standard is night and day.

Agree2 Disagree0

06 Dec 2017 17:22:28
the ideal scenario is to keep improving the team, keep winning the league, keep qualifying for CL and then occasionally - with a very kind draw - making it out of the group or el at least.

at present, with the squad we have, a tough draw in qualifying my be beyond us. Remember this year we had giff and md both out for qualifying, some may say we were lucky to get thru,

Last night the ex celtic pundits were saying "have we improved". Yes we are still in Europe after Christmas which is a result - but have we improved from last seasons outings.

2 draws against Man City versus 7-1, 5-1, 0-1 last night.

I was basing it on football after Christmas so I guess so - but it is debateable and I can see and agree with points in the argument that we haven't improved.

Next 2 transfer windows will seriously answer that question. If we invest in a team that's more competitive in Europe or if we make like for like changes and don't show ambition there.

In the market we are in its not easy I know - but we need to become more competitive with teams at "our level" and perhaps one level up. never going to compete with the top teams unless Sheik MaHandi comes in.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Dec 2017 20:31:38
Just read some stats regarding BR in Europe. Brendan has managed 18 games in Europe, between Liverpool and Celtic. Has only won twice, one being Anderlec and one with Liverpool and has had 3 draws and 13 defeats. So his record with Liverpool is only slightly better than with us and he had Suarez then. A few posters have been commenting that we need to play differently in Europe and I agree we are too open and can't stay in the game long enough to try and get anything from it. Now we are in europa, we are not playing against the PSG but there are still some very good teams in there. If we go out and play as we do in SPL, we will be out in next round. Surly we need to just agree it's not working. Definition of insanity is doing the same thing every time and expecting a different result.

Suarez had been sold by the time Liverpool got to Europe.

A poor performance last night and for once i will say BR got it wrong. Sinclair looked like he was playing CM and Armstrong out wide it did not work. Why did we not reward the players who did so well on Saturday? Yes Anderlecht are a different level to Motherwell but if these players are not expected to play at CL or EL level then why are they at the Club. Ntcham has been playing magnificent yet dropped, he made a massive difference when on excellent passing and as always not afraid to go for goal from distance. Edouard scores a hat-trick yet dropped, he look energetic when he came on. Ajer was composed and confident yet dropped, Boyata could not play a 10 yard pass to feet last night and every clearence went to an Anderlecht player, Ajer must be confused as to why he can't be relied upon to step in at this level. It pains me to see us perform this way in Europe but there also has to be a sense of realism we are possibly the Club with the lowest budget in the entire competition. Unless BR is given a budget similar to what Martin Oneill was given then we are going to find it hard to compete even at EL level. The fact is most other Clubs have Billionaires willing to dip into their own pockets to achieve success, we are trying to do it by living within our means, it will work in Scotland but not in Europe. The break can't come quick enough because there is an abundance of players who look tired and in urgent need of a break, now is the time to freshen things up in the SPL and we should not be afraid to drop players. We now have Hibs at the weekend and i really hope we give starts to Edouard, Ntcham, Rogic, Kouassi, Ajer, and even young Johnston, we need to freshen things up and if that means dropping last seasons star players then so be it we have a Title to win.

All fair points Stan.

Firstly, I'm delighted with us getting into the Europa but last night, and for a wee while actually, we haven't looked anything like our best.

Ntcham and Rogic, for me, have to be in the starting XI. I would really like to see game time for Kouassi, Edouard and Ajer also. There's a few players in the side right now who seem to be getting picked regardless of performances and the three I've mentioned there are knocking on the door now.

As for the injections of real quality, we can keep saying it buddy but it won't happen.

06 Dec 2017 11:54:56
Some good points Jim Tim. agree totally that Kouassi and Ajer need to be given a chance! Far to many players getting picked on last years form, Sinclair and Armstrong being the main 2! I think both need rested for a few weeks! And I’ve said before I like big Ajer and the boys got a big future! The team needs freshened up because there’s more than a few who look like theyr running on empty! Would have took Europa League all day long after the group We got and after a nite calming down a bit (apologies again to welsbhoy lol) I can see that achieving Europe after Xmas is good! Just thought we went out with a whimper last nite! A real good chance to get a win under our belts and give us some confidence going into the EL, not to mention the money u get for a win! But it was so flat and uninspiring last nite! Winter break can’t come Kwik enough lol!

06 Dec 2017 11:58:15
We will never be able to attract already established real quality. We don't have the cash for that, but we certainly have the resources to get decent/ better than we have.

Our defence is a shambles at CL level. Boyata and Lustigs passing is woeful at times and always dangerous. Gordon was excellent last night but he too gives you heart attacks

Rogers needs to sort out the midfield and give players a run in place of those clearly out of form. Rogic and Ntcham on current form need to play.

We have qualified from the hardest group and that is great we all know if it had been that team who turned up in Anderlecht we would have been out on our arses over there too.

We have made another £3m for qualifying and gate and TV money will boost that by possibly another £3m. This on top of the circa £33m from being in it, now needs to be invested.

Dugs in the street know where we are weak. We fecked up with not sorting out defence in the summer. That coupled to still a gap in a driving no 10 and a better keeper needs looked at.

At the start of this campaign I would have tore your arm out of it socket for this outcome. To me we need to accept tankings and use the money to reduce their severity.

We have indeed taken the tankings, but up until now using the money to reduce them hasn't happened. Rogers, his back room staff, the board and the fans know this team are probably at the limit of their ability. That could change with three or four players giving us stability at the back and a threat from midfield.

Over to you Brendan and your brilliant scout guy. This is your test. Can you find what we need within the budget you have?

Remember though, we are £40 million to the good. We qualified. And everyone who hates us will be fecking spewing at that. £40m to improve at Euro level means the rest will never catch us unless we self destruct.

January window will tell us if the board just like to talk of ambitions to be a CL level team, or actually do something about it.

Sore one, but not unexpected, by me anyway.

I agree with you regarding Sinclair Lh86. I said before the last PSG game (not that it would have made much difference) that I would drop Sinclair. He's been an absolute passenger for us in Europe, and after all, is that not what we shelled out on him for, to take us to the next level. Question is with Roberts out who do we really ha e for the wide berths? Lustig also looks like he's heading over the hill at RB. Hopefully Ralston gets back soon and gets a few games I haven't quite made my mind up on him yet.

I’d agree with a lot of posters that last nights performance was poor. As a team we definitely look jaded. As a team at the minute I’m not really seeing the fast pressing and the fluent passing like we did last season even in the spl. It would seem we are desperate for the break to come but I’d agree we definitely need to bring at least 2-3 quality players in at January. A lot of the players seem to be getting knocks, strains and again this seems to be affecting form.
But we also need a bit of realism here, we go into the European stage as fourth seeds for a reason, we probably have one of the smallest budgets in there. We had very little down time from when the season ended until the qualifiers began and I’d be fairly confident we have played more games than most of the teams who have played champions league. We have won a cup already and have the league probably bagged already . Hindsight is a wonderful thing where we can say “ start ntcham and Rogic ahead of mcgregor and Armstrong where in previous games where we have struggled people have said the exact opposite. Especially regarding ntcham who was getting loads of stick on this site early on in the season. At the end of the day, a lot of these players aren't at champions league level so they aren’t capable of consistently playing well in the games. We have to remember, gladbach had a budget of over 100 million and anderlecht had two Romanian players injured last night who cost 15 million for the pair.
In saying all that like most others I’d like to see us bringing in a new right back, centre back and a midfielder that can pick out a pass.

Good post mate and fair assessment Armstrong has been poor for a while but it’s also good we have players like Ntcham and Rogic who can come on and make the difference im a big Cal Mac fan and would always try and play him.

Was that just a bad day at the office or do we need to go shopping in Jan for more than we wanted too. Cause I thought we only needed a CH in this window. But apart from what we need after no getting on the night where does that leave Griff?

Soooooooooooooo reminded me of the game at Parkhead after we had beaten Ajax 3-1 away. The team didn't know what to play for tonight. Ultimately, job done! Team definitely needs invigorating and a bit of a refresh. We should partly fund this by punting Simunovic. we are not that good that we can carry players. If no fit. get rid.

OK where do we need to make changes

A RB is a priority someone with pace and strength

A pacey left sided CB with Joso and Deryck as the other defender Toulouse defender Issy Diop

John Mcginn to replace Armstrong with Brown and Ntcham as the other two

Another winger to provide cover given that Hayes may get a chance on the left if Sinclair's form does not improve

The team needs the winter break

Any suggestions for the other positions.

{Ed007's Note - Sondre Rossbach for GK. I'd leave McGinn where he is just now and playing every week until summer 2019 when he's out of contract - and so is Armstrong and Brown will older too and probably playing less. Would McGinn improve us in the CL now or in the future? No, not imo but he would keep us ahead of the rest of Scotland if he keeps progressing under Lennon at Hibs. He showed at Celtic Park what he could do when Brown wasn't on the park and ran the show that day. I've said for a year or so McGinn should have been the only player in Scotland Celtic should be looking to sign.}

I'm glad people are starting to see Armstrong's failures. He's not got the mental strength or composure to play at the highest level. Ntcham all day for me.

Jonace I'd like to see Ralston getting a run before buying another rb. as for the winger I'd like to see young Johnstone or miller giving a run out (they can play both) before buying there. imo mginn at this moment is only spl level and mid field is top heavy just now with Brown ntcham kouassi Armstrong mgregor and rogic. if we buy for mid I'd like someone who is better than what we have . ideally a playmaker. imo cb is the priority an experienced seasoned pro who can organise and read the game . also distribute the ball better than our cbs . this should / could help develop simo and ajer.

Rossbach is a really good shout Ed, he was supposed to be signing for one of the Manchester clubs recently but I think he got a bad injury and it fell through. I'd rather that type of signing than a 34 or 35 year old as we've seen how difficult Craig Gordon has found it at times adapting to being more of a ball player as he's a bit longer in the tooth. McGinn would be a good signing and the Lewis Morgan link doesn't seem to be going away either.

Keeper, centre back and a creative attacker.

I think griff will be annoyed not playing last night but Rodgers has always went dembele in Euro and if the young lad can’t get a run out after scoring a hattrick at weekend then when can he? Dembele didn’t hold the ball up at all last night which would of helped easy some pressure but that ain’t Griffs game so would of been pointless playing him.
