What a performance! No last ditch defending with 10 men behind the ball but actually holding our own against a cash rich team away from home. So proud of the whole team tonight and what a difference Rodgers has made. What about Armstrong and Rogic though? World class performances from these 2.

Why is Craig Thomson allowed to referee in the Champions League? Why is this man even allowed to referee in the SPFL. Another disastrous performance!

What game did he do tonight?

06 Dec 2016 22:51:53
Great game and no little skill shown. griff can't show the excellent of msckay-Steven, considering first game this season? We need all the players, hsil Ti step up.

Was surprised with Rodgers after match tonight when he said that our penalty shout was not a penalty as the holding occurred outside the box or on the line.

However, the laws of the game state that for holding offences, if the holding continuous into the penalty box (which it did) , then it is a penalty. Even if it was just on the line, then it is still a penalty as the line is considered the start of the penalty area.

Anyway, great performance tonight. Was especially pleased that we tried to play on the front foot and take the game to City. ON a different night we may have sneaked a win but draw was probably fair result.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed007's Note - This came up on here last week as well and I said the line is considered part of the area - I noted the commentator said the same tonight - so that's a strange one. Why I remember the rule and what makes it easy to remember is if the 'keeper handles or catches the ball on the line it's not a considered outside the area.}

06 Dec 2016 23:09:55
I think BR was just being diplomatic IMO.

Agree1 Disagree0

07 Dec 2016 23:13:10
Yes BR was been diplomatic and probably hadn't seen TV replays .

The best thing about our Champions League campaign was that we were able to play at worse a reasonably attacking game . Our striker was never starved of getting involved in the game . This should mean we can attract good players into the club as they can expect decent games in Europe.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Dec 2016 22:47:14
Solid performance tonight disapointed never won against city in the one of the two games but held our own. On a side note jesus christ did anyone see the howler craig thomson made? Gave a pen and a sending off which where neither. In a cery important game as well.

06 Dec 2016 21:56:38
Please with how we played but disappointed we never won it to be honest.
We had the chances.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed007's Note - To be fair though so did they, Kev.}

06 Dec 2016 22:17:16
Ye but it felt like their keeper was the busier. Might be the tinted glasses though.

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I thought a draw was a fair result, it was never a penalty they claimed for. Guardiola showing himself up to be a knobhead again :-D

06 Dec 2016 22:19:39
Don't think I've seen us have so many chances away from home in the CL. Pretty pleased with our play and even GMS coming on and playing a good cameo.

Agree2 Disagree0

07 Dec 2016 00:53:36
That miss cost us a deserved win tho. And it cost me £82 into the bargain, getting fed up fast with gambling. Far too many near wins recently.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I've never tried fast betting but I've tried some fast women in my time :-o And they cost less than £82. I've still got some phone numbers, Steph for a small commission of course ;-)

07 Dec 2016 17:08:22
Pass them on ed. Al just set up a standing order. U can stick your wee commission up your arse. Haha.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - :-D

06 Dec 2016 21:55:37
After the result tonight it means Rangers managed to hold onto their record of being the worst performing Scottish team in Champions League history.

In 2009/ 10 Rangers finished bottom of their group with 2 points. Their group contained Unirea Urziceni, Stuttgart and Sevilla, which was hardly the group of death.

Believable3 Unbelievable1

06 Dec 2016 22:21:09
Well the club did die not long after Rab so maybe it was.

Agree2 Disagree0

06 Dec 2016 22:42:04
Wee bit of a desperate post mate. Who gives a rubbish about those figures? How many games in CL did that old club let seven passed them?
We finished bottom of the group regardless. Am I disappointed? Of course. But, what a difference in how we are playing. Let's just hope we can keep this group of players for a couple of years (highly unlikely with the money down south but I can hope)

Agree0 Disagree1

06 Dec 2016 23:38:06
You obviously don't recognise a wind up when you see one.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Dec 2016 21:44:51
Pleased with that. There were spells particularly in the second half there where we looked the better side.

Armstrong MoM for me. Yet another European tie where he covered more grass than anybody. He played a great passing game tonight.

We might be rock bottom of that group but there are positives and promising signs to be taken from this season's CL campaign.

Believable5 Unbelievable2

06 Dec 2016 22:01:47
Definitely jimtim, biggest disappointment for me over the 6 games was the performance against the Germans at parkhead. Taking Barcelona aside, I feel there's plenty of positives to take from the two city games and the game in Germany. Was always going to be a massive ask to come out of that group and stay in Europe. Roll on the champions league next season.

Agree3 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Nobody really expected to take anything from Barca - and we played well against them at Celtic Park - but nobody expected us to take anything from City and to get 2 draws, regardless of who they played tonight as it was still a £200 million team I seen someone say, is nothing short of fantastic.
And the fact is we're actually taking the game to these teams rather than sitting back and try and spring a counter-attack and snatch scraps.}

06 Dec 2016 22:21:26
Well said Ed. Our play in the away two away games we got draws was very refreshing.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Dec 2016 22:28:48
The BMG at home was always going to be a big game for us Garry. Take into account now we've managed to get points off City twice and away in Germany, that result really was a sore one.

That's the main thing for me Ed. The confidence in our own ability, and knowing that if you make the ball do the work, any side will not just be forced to allow us to play, but also give us the respect to do so. The way we move as a unit now though is a big part of that.

Just a few key signings away from a right good side I think.

Agree2 Disagree0

06 Dec 2016 22:42:25
Couldn't agree more ed, definitely more positives than negatives to be taken from this years European games.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Dec 2016 22:44:11
Agreed. No doubt we'll hear about their b team etc, but lest we forget, one of our best players, and a starter tonight, can't even get into said b team. It was a good performance and a terrific result.

Agree1 Disagree0

06 Dec 2016 22:44:28
Good point Ed, since BR took over we've seen that same attitude in pretty much every game. HH.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Dec 2016 22:44:34
Sums it up Ed. £200 million on the park and the players used will be considered second rate and the excuse for that result.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - The only City player that caught the eye was Paddy Roberts! I was hoping after he scored he had ripped his shirt off to reveal a KIERAN TIERNEY'S FENIAN ARMY tattoo before throwing his shirt in Guardiola's face. :-D

07 Dec 2016 16:42:58
hahaha that's the most i laughed in a while.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - It would have been awesome but we'd have had Nora on moaning about his tattoo and how he was booked for taking his shirt off.}

06 Dec 2016 21:43:16
4/ 5 £10m plus players on performances tonight.

. I think he's been complimentary about us all game.

Agree2 Disagree1

06 Dec 2016 21:58:11
Ave to agree drb, be has slated city all night n complimented us rightly, a lot of praise for roberts n fair in his assessment of our penalty call n correct on the non penalty for city, never a penalty.
Thought we were excellent all night, good possession, great going forward n I think we deserved to win the game. Roberts was great, n the goal was sublime, folk keep saying he always cuts in on his left, well when he has that wand of a left foot why not. He also went outside as well as cutting in n playing lovely 1 2's. That's why he starts every game for me. Rogic again just superb, the guy oozes class n another 90 plus minutes, not bad for an unfit guy eh rayman haha.
Broony excellent again, n to a man including the subs I thought everyone played their part. Mackay Steven may now get a run out n he can on n was very lively n unlucky not to score.
Wee james I thought was having a good game n it's a shame about the injury, looked like an innocuous one n those can be the worst, hope not.
And the city goal was avoidable, should have closed the ball down quicker in the city half striker gets a run on erik n even then we r still ok just felt it wasn't that great n shot n gordon probably should have saved it.
Other than that we were excellent n the sim now is to look to do a treble n get ready for qualifiers next year, and improve with quality from a strong position, couple of 1st teamers added for 1 or 2 key positions n we will be very strong.
Hail hail brendan n the bhoys.

Abbeyman67, what game were you watching and obviously not listening to tonight . Robbie Savage was very complimentary towards Celtiic the whole game . Poor poor post Abbeyman 67.

07 Dec 2016 22:38:13
Got to agree, I thought him and the commentator were very complimentary at times and spent more time talking about us than man city.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Dec 2016 20:46:31
You can see where we are weak; pace in defence is the problem CG not up to CL standard but we have 4 goalkeepers already have to clear three out then buy well. Perhaps Jerry St Juste can give pace in defence but he is young and will need time. We also need quality back up for Tierney and Luznig may be coming to the end of his time at fullback done nothing wrong tonight but is getting older and it must be hard to race up and down the wing on nights like this.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

06 Dec 2016 22:03:15
Some of those man city players have lightning pace and we were caught high but that's how we had to play to stay in it and press. Your not going to get cb that can defend and match a winger for pace unless you can pay for it. Fair enough they could of reacted quicker/ better but come on mate. Players did well tonight and if we had finished better we could of won.

Got Agathe for 50k ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Aye, and we were bumped!}

06 Dec 2016 23:10:10
Unfair on lustig I think. He might not be the quickest but he gives us a level of robustness IMVHO and is deserving of a new deal

Thought brown positional play this evening was great. Armstrong mobility was evident ; he is developing fast in to a potential petrov type

Great comment earlier about " the unit ", we certainly play as a team and with our financial limitations we need to work as a team, develop as a team, attack as a team, defend as a team and be all about team where the sum is greater than the individual parts

That type of team requires stamina and fitness and decent game intelligence. We will never ever ever have eleven technically gifted and fast players. We can't afford that but this team is certainly punching above its weight already and 2 to 3 additions will only help

Hail hail.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Dec 2016 09:28:04
I actually rated Agathe as a defender because his pace and determination saved us on numerous occasions.

I know his end product for crossing and shooting was a bit erratic but when he was on form he was unstoppable because no one could catch him.

On a very slight negative, I do think MD needs a rest. Glad to see LG introduced earlier. I saw that coming weeks ago.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I wouldn't say that's negative at all mate. He looks sluggish and I said on the live chat I feel he needs a goal from open play to give him a lift but I won't be surprised to see LG start on Friday night.}

06 Dec 2016 20:34:46
Enjoyed the first half but CG should have done a lot better at their goal.

{Ed007's Note - ;-(

06 Dec 2016 20:40:55
I've been happy with Gordon for the most part this season but that was poor again. Anything more concrete on a new keeper in the summer other than a hunch Ed? I think you might well be right either way.

Agree4 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - It's obvious Rodgers never fancied Gordon or he wouldn't have panicked and brought De Vries in and Gordon hasn't (and won't) improve any great deal to change the manager's mind. I would be amazed if we aren't scouting 'keepers.}

06 Dec 2016 21:35:50
Rodgers bringing in De Vries, doesn't engender any confidence in his ability to judge a goalkeeper.

Agree0 Disagree1

06 Dec 2016 21:09:18
Sorry Ed I was more meaning do you think we'll be looking for a new number 1? Or will he try De Vries again come the summer?

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I think he'll bring in a new No.1 and De Vries will be the No.2. I can't see Gordon staying if he loses his place in the team and he's too good to be a No.2. He's good enough to be a No.1, not just at Celtic.}

06 Dec 2016 22:12:24
Nothing against gordon but I've just never rated him, even when he was at hearts. N despite some decent performances n great saves at times, as some have said he is a good shot stopper he just never fills me with confidence n we need a strong goalkeeper, that's part of the spine of any great team. Too many mistakes costing us dear n de Vries isn't the answer either but we need to get looking as there r good keepers out there.

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Dec 2016 22:19:33
Agree with all of that and tbh I'd be excited by the prospect of a new man between the sticks.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - For me it's the one obvious weakness in the team. That City 'keeper was honking btw, even I wouldn't have him over Gordon.}

06 Dec 2016 22:56:13
The rumour was we were after Vorm in the summer but the GK injuries at Spurs meant they had to hold onto him until some of their keepers were back from injury.

If we are still after a GK then I would like to see Mouez Hassen (Nice) brought in as I think he has amazing potential.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I'm sure Hassen is out of contract this summer, Rab. Maybe get big Moussa to sweet talk him for us.}

07 Dec 2016 09:31:21
That makes him an even better transfer target and Stevie Woods has done a great job at coaching our keepers in recent years, so I could see him becomming the next Forster.

Pretty sure Fasan is out of contract in the summer, which would suggest we will have a GK spot available. Would like to see either de Vries or Baily moved on as well.

Would be happy with Gordon/ Hassen/ Baily or de Vries.

He celebrated just as much as the rest when we won the cup even though he only got a couple of minutes. It definitely seems out of character from the way he's been the past season or two.

Kev. He went up the tunnel at full time leaving the other players to celebrate. He looked miserable but reappeared a few minutes later.

Just watched the under nine teens throw away a HT 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 at Man City. Definitely a game of two halfs where we were much the better team in the first 45 but whatever was in the HT Bovril affected both teams in extremely opposite ways!
This 'away hoodoo' in Europe seems to run right through the club and the sooner it's broken the better- probably next season though lol.
