What a night always on tenterhooks but we got through that's what football is all about . what a difference a manager makes rodgers can see how to change things
Hail hail .

We were always in total control of that game. Even there tricky winger was kept out of the game. Stupid goal to concede hope Rodgers is looking for another goalie or use big fasan.

Agree2 Disagree0

04 Aug 2016 01:44:33
The only 2 real chance's they had and Gordon mad a howler at both. thank god the first one was offside or we would be looking at the Europa play offs. at least now if we do get put out in the next round we are in the Europa group stages.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 23:31:54
Good news got back from game and got a headache, been a while since the noise and atmosphere has done that so happy.
Point 1 we would definitely have folded last year so cudos for BR.
Point 2 CG no longer fills me with confidence, ed smiles.
Point 3 Subs made at good times tho we lost goal after Toure came on.
Point 4 Tho forrest was decent there is no point to it as there no end product.
Point 5 Lacked creativity with no PR that's worrying.
Point 6 who cares we won lol.

Believable1 Unbelievable3

04 Aug 2016 06:12:52
A thought we looked far more confident when toure came on. Give him the arm band now for me. That's what a captain should do for a team in ma book.

We definitely need another wide player to take the Weight off wee paddy, what an atmosphere ladt night GB never stopped singing time to get the cheque book out Pedro.

Will this be another 10 million at least for Celtic with at least 8 more top rated games .
We will have to ask the Rangers fans what is happening on the soaps, as we will lose all track of them .

I was gutted tonight Old Bhoy i missed Home and Away. lol.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 23:23:12
Thought all the young guys did really well tonight (teirney, janko, o'connell) also, big dembele turned the game, great running and determination to win that penalty, he was great, hopefully turned the corner after his first goal. Really optimistic for the season and hope we get a nice draw on Friday. Hail hail troops.

Believable3 Unbelievable1

His pressing getting ball back was class, not the biggest broony fan but last 3 games he's impress me, especially against Leicester he was good.

Agree1 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 23:03:52
Caught the second half tonight teams starting to click defence looking solid thought janko showed great attitude in trying to create attacks big dembelle hope this is the start for him more settled and a big smile on his face said it all? Toure will be a player for us. Place looked buzzimg tonight. Had a chuckle at the press purring about the zombies 2-0 win against annan and our under 20's pump them 5-1 going on 10-1 can't wait for the weekend get the show on the road. Hope wee paddy roberts is ok too πŸ€.

Relieved to be through tonight. Astana were organised tonight, but rarely troubled us. Despite what people are saying, Gordon made the right decision and cleared the line with a decent header, it was just a fine finish. a belter actually! Janko and Tierney were tremendous on either flank, up and down the line all evening and positive going forward. Rodgers obviously noted the keeper was terrible with crosses. Brown was really disciplined and composed this evening, from back to front. He sat in to form a back 3 when wing backs got forward, the balance of the side was about right tonight. The bold Brendan praised the supporters, but gave us a little dink on the chin to remain patient in these games and trust in the players. He said the negativity from the stands transmitted to the players and had them on edge. he's right and at least he had the balls to say it. Bring on the CL!

Believable2 Unbelievable3

04 Aug 2016 00:29:19
A decent header? That head was as straight as an assist if a keepers go a do that get height on it or find a team mate.

Agree1 Disagree0

04 Aug 2016 03:10:49
Agree bud, I find it hard to sit and listen to our fans at times, we are not playing Patrick thistle or Dundee, we are playing a European team that have won there domestic league, spent a bit of money and are very organized, we can't just go gun ho and attack, they played 3 home games in cl last year and never got beat, they are no mugs, we done well to get through the tie,

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 23:00:25
Craig Gordon is getting worse every game like Efe it's the individual errors that have been costing us his distribution is very poor to. i was always a fan of his but can honestly say we need a better keeper in or give fazan a chance. on a brighter note thought janko played his best game as did forrest on the left kolo played well when he came on Tierney class as ever but special praise from me goes out to O'connell thought he was superb.

I missed the second guy get sent aff. What he do?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Aug 2016 22:59:17
Think it was just yapping at the ref. Probably saying that if he had sent the big boy off for one of the previous 14 fouls then he wouldn't have given away the penalty!

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 23:02:36
From what I saw it looked like he was mouthing off to the ref. Probably said something he shouldn't have.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 23:05:33
He said the rangers are still the same team and the ref obviously couldn't take being spoken to that way? Lol.

03 Aug 2016 22:49:14
My god what a rush, this time last year we would have folded thought we were very good tonight. Now mr lawell get your hand on the cheque book and back our manager well done to that fantastic support green brigade marvellous backing. Talk about pressure dembelle showed none he will bang them in now. Ed do you think we will now get players in and have you any news on new signings hail hail COYBIG.

Gordon- nightmare poor both times they had ball in the net and kicking was shocking.

Janko- big and strong. Had a few flashes but I am still far from convinced by him.

Lustig- good solid game. His balls through to Griffiths were great tae.

Oconnell- another good solid game. Starting to change my mind about him.

Tierney- what more can you say about this Bhoy. Great game

Brown- good game kept it simple most part and broke up their play. Great ball through for Griffiths

Mcgregor- good game. Worked very hard to nullify them and created a few chances going forward. Always available and looking to get on the ball.

Armstrong- looked steady in the middle but when shifted left fell out the game

Forrest- first half was best I have seen from him in long time. When switched found it bit more difficult. Keep him out left.

Robert- looked in the mood. Hopefully nothing to serious

Griffiths- hard to be critical after scoring goal but probably should have had at least one more.

Johansen- worked hard and played some good balls into the box. Great pass through for Griffiths but need more from him.

Toure- mopped up and looked good.

Dembele- great piece of play to win and convert the goal. Then another right after.
Brave taking the penalty.

Rogers- overall think he picked the right starting 11 and made good subs.

Kev 83 A very good post in my opinion, I would near enough agree with u on all your ratings . I think it was Brown and Forrest best games in 2016 . B R singing Brown's praises this week, although sneered by some on here, definitely switched Brown on I was happy to see the way we closed them down in their own half and didn't let Astana put our new look centre back combination under pressure . i wasn't sure about Toure but in his half hour he demonstrated speed strength and defensive skills .

The only negative point to me was, we can't just hand the opposition goals when they are not threatening . I am afraid Gordon nearly through it away in a game we were completely under control.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 23:17:37
Guys not on to defend CG, but what more could he have done with the goal?
Header in a different direction? Yea maybe but could also fell to an opponent.
Offside goal? is it possible he seen the flag go up and just didn't move, I don't know but its possible.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Aug 2016 08:44:29
Rayman he could easily just controlled it on his chest or stayed in his box and gathered it up.
As for offside goal he wouldn't have came out flapping if he knew it was offside.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 21:52:33
OK i think I have this right we can now play Dinamo Zagreb, Ludogorets Razgrad, Kopehaben, Hapoel Beer Sheva or Dundalk. OK just my opinion but we should be comfortable against anyone but Zagreb and even they should be very beatable
Very confident we can do this Bhoys.
Praise to most of the team tonight except Gordon. Starting to feel he`s going to be the weak link.

Hail Hail.

Believable2 Unbelievable2

03 Aug 2016 22:10:57
Definitely agree. Gordon is not installing any confidence in the team and I now see what ed007 and other posters have said previously. Thought Janko did well and Kolo looked calm and composed always trying to pick a probing and meaningful pass.

03 Aug 2016 22:11:26
I would take the Irish mob Copenhagen area decent team mate! As are the Bulgarian mob.

Agree0 Disagree1

03 Aug 2016 22:17:21
MMI and everyone else blaming Gordon, that was a great clearing header from a defence splitting pass and he was beaten by a wonder strike from the Astana player.
Gordon will be our keeper this season so let's all get behind him. Bring on the Dundalk. Hail Hail.

Agree2 Disagree2

03 Aug 2016 22:21:52
didnt say i blamed him i said he thought he was going to be the weak link.

Agree1 Disagree1

03 Aug 2016 22:23:54
Wonder strike?
Gordon was shocking at the goal.
There was no need for it.
Even after he came out all he had to do was control it on his chest.

Agree0 Disagree1

03 Aug 2016 23:04:32
Great clearing header? Did you actually see what happened from that great clearing header? Wow! Are you on the wind up?

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 23:09:10
Yes we have to back our goalie, we have to not back Efe, there seems to be a different set of quidelines for Gordon than Efe . Why not give Fasan the jersey .

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Aug 2016 06:42:24
Gordon's horrific he's as guilty as efe for mistakes. He palms the ball into danger area has weak wrists won't come for cross balls with any conviction and is a coward.

Welldone bhoys think this time last season we would have folded a kind of feared the worst at 1.1 but got through now it's time to get some quality players in new goalie for starters what is this fud Gordon all about what is it with him in Europe wonder what the ed thinks about him lol anyhow on to the next round hopefully get a good draw.

03 Aug 2016 22:07:50
Good point man this time last season we would have bricked it.
Is that progress I see, I think it might just be.

03 Aug 2016 21:49:37
I would prioritise a new keeper over any other position.
Delighted for the team and MD, what a bit of confidence to take the final penalty. Let's hope this gets the ball rolling for him.
For me SJ was poor.
Great game game by young o'connel.
Toure is going to be great for the club.
Forrest tried his best tonight but what use is a winger with no final ball.
I would have given anything for Scott Browns scissor kick attempt to have gone in!

Bring on the draw - when is it?

03 Aug 2016 23:15:00
Stefan Johansen , sent in a couple of great balls and worked well. He may not have been as dominant as in his first year but he wasn't bad .
O'Connell had a massive game, B R tactics of pressurising them all over the pitch left our centre back's job relatively simple as they stopped Astana running at them with the ball, but I still thought young O'Connell was massive.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 21:47:01
Now the BR has got Ambrose out of the team do you think he will do the same with Gordon. We were crusing defence looked solid until Gordon started flapping. He and bailly were the cheap options and they look it. Spend money on Marshall or Ward.

Deserved over two legs. Delighted for Dembele. I know the pen isn't enough to convince people but his footwork in the build up would hopefully be. Thought Brown was fantastic. Gordon needs to go. We still need a winger.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

03 Aug 2016 21:46:46
Pretty sure they have signed Sinclair. Brown was absolutely brilliant tonight. As were a few others. Johansson looked a little rusty but generally they all played with heart and desire and never stopped the whole game. I was entertained so no complaints. Even got some drama. Some strike to beat a goalie from 40 yards.

Agree1 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 21:56:08
jimtim that's the brown we know cg has been my biggest fear for 2 years more than ambrose. a gk and decent left winger i think we be no a bad team.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 22:02:06
Gordon has been poor for a while now but who else would we buy who is significantly better? Bit of a problem! Thought Dembele was good when he came on. Very quick, good feet. I know it's a goal via a penalty but it took some bottle to put that away. If he misses it he is toast no matter what he does in the future. Also good to see that BR is prepared to drop Ambrose despite what he has said in the press. Acting like a manager. He won't wash dirty linen in public but looks like he will sort it out and to be fair he has a lot of sorting out to do. Players won't come in until he has unloaded some of his current squad and that might be difficult as who wants to buy them. So he might end up with the same squad RD left him with, but he will get a better tune out of them. Can see that already.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 22:06:19
Agree JimTim I think we will c dembele coming on to a game now n the goals will come easier. Some great touches n took his goal well. Gordon was woeful at the goal and does need replaced.
However we are through and that's what matters most, brown again is getting back to the form we know and will be a big player this season. Hail hail.
Usual quality from Tierney as always, real Celtic man. COYBIG.

Hi ed

Hopefully sum is better than the individual parts ( a poor looking team) and I fear the worst

Mr Forrest ain't no big game player with a big heart. He's a huge gamble. I hope it pays off

I love Celtic but that is one of the weakest line ups I think I've ever seen on the park at the same time for such a big occasion

Obviously some of it is forced but big decisions were there to be made and BR had made them

I hope we do it but that starting line up won't do it which means that the bench will need to prove crucial

If we win I envisage 2 goals coming from the bench via rogic or johansen and dembele

Hail hail.

I'm no fan of Forrest but when he plays well he can run at players. Trying to give their fullbacks a shock I think with paddy and James. Rogic should start ahead of mcgregor imo.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 19:11:25
I had my doubts about Ambrose starting as there would have been even more pressure on him after the fans reaction in the Barcelona game and it would have been panic stations in the stadium when the ball was near him. However I am really surprised (and disappointed) that Forrest is starting.
He brings nothing to the team and although he has experience, he should have been offloaded before now. Saying that, he might do a Karagandy and score a belter?!
Gordon is another concern (as usual) and I hope he doesn't let us down in another big game once again? Anyway; now that my concerns are out of the way COYBIG.

Agree0 Disagree1

I think brendan is more shrewd about the formations and will go with a 4.4.2
He's been saying all week about patience and if there is no score we are through to next round.

Agree0 Disagree1

03 Aug 2016 18:47:34
We'll see a back 5 tonight I think, their main threat is from the wing. Either Roberts or Janko as RWB and Ambrose Lustig O'Connell as a central 3. Toure should come on

I'd go:

Gordon

Ambrose
Lustig
O'Connell

Janko
Brown
Johansen
Tierney

Roberts
Griffiths
Dembele.

Was looking at people's predictions for tonight, more than a few people, on here and at work, have said 3-0. To be honest I think that's really optimistic and I expect a tough game they're not that bad a team. I'd say 2-1 Celtic and bring on dundalk next HAIL HAIL.

I reckon draw-celtic ht/ ft would be a good bet, as the game goes on this team will tire due to the time difference. Start of 2nd half is the equivalent of 1.45 am their time.

03 Aug 2016 16:31:19
Utter garbage about tiring because of time difference were talking about professional footballers who arrived in plenty of time and they haven't played in a week so will be well prepared. Hopefully they do tire because we're giving them a run around though.

Ed, doing some job mate keeping up with all these posts. Great to be back.
Just a quick post on the TV rights and wondered if u can shed some of your opinions on this.
Firstly for some of us who are unwell too travel through to paradise to see the game, we rely on TV to watch such an important match. Now I understand this doesn't apply to all or maybe some of the good folks on here feel the same.
But I pay for sky TV full package plus BT subscription plus premier sports subscription. It just goes on, now were being asked to subscribe to Celtic TV now to watch the match? I know it's possible to watch it online through streaming but quality is just not the same. Sorry if Iam sounding like an old git but feel frustrated at the lack of proper use of TV rights and where the hell it ends for the fans. Would love to know your thoughts ED and anyone else's.
HH fellow tims.

{Ed007's Note - Thanks, Stew and nice to hear from you. Cancel all those rip off subscriptions and jump aboard the KODI bus, I bought an android box and have never looked back but you can also run it through your laptop/tablet and connect the device to your TV, but that's you stumped if you want to use them while watching the game.
If you need any advice or help visit our ANDROID PAGE and we also have our very own expert Tim on the stuff in Welsbhoy who must think I'm a pain in the arse for being so thick about it all.}

03 Aug 2016 15:35:48
Cheers ED for the swift reply, I've been told before about getting rid of it all for something equivalent.
I've a friend who can do some magic with a certain (nameless) fire stick and save on all subscriptions as it's just daylight robbery. Something Iam now going to change so thanks very much my friend for the advice I WILL be jumping onboard kodi, and have a look through the posts u suggest cause it's getting beyond a joke this.
The confusion from my mates is the same feel let down and ripped off. Does beg the question tho ED is this a ploy to get more subscribed viewers for our own TV channel or another crazy mishap by the people above? As I found it crazy too going onto 365 to do my bets for tonight every champ league game is covered on TV by them bar Celtic?
It's a mad world ED.

{Ed007's Note - It's to get more money out of you mate.}

Hi all, 1st time posting comment.
Was looking at people's predictions for tonight, more than a few people, on here and at work, have said 3-0. To be honest I think that's really optimistic and I expect a tough game they're not that bad a team. I'd say 2-1 Celtic and bring on dundalk next HAIL HAIL.

There is an interview with Barton at this game on youtube where he says it was an ambition of his to play at Celtic Park and now that he had finally done it he was delighted that he had got the chance to sample the fantastic atmosphere in the flesh after many years of watching on tv as a FAN.

I like the difference between Rodgers and Deila on approaching these games, Deila was bricking it and it showed itself in the team last year who were afraid of making mistakes. Rodgers simply has told the team, rise above the hysteria, play your normal game, and the crowd will help you. Rodgers knows a packed Celtic Park is a massive help to the team, feed off that buzz and go out and win the game.
Even though I am not having a bet I looked at the goalscorer odds, I really fancy Dembele tonight and he is 5/ 1 first goal or 15/ 8 anytime, Roberts is 5/ 1 and 9/ 4, Griffiths is only 3/ 1 and 11/ 10.
If as I hope Dembele scores it will be a massive boost to his confidence.
I think it will be a nervous night if we do not score in first half, but I will take a 1-0 or god forbid, nerve rattling 0-0.

Timalloy, I'd have to disagree, under Rd we were fine in these qualifiers, it was the playoff round where the players let Rd n let of all the fans down, specially big Virgil who cost us a couple of goals n the buggered off.
Rd wasn't the 1 who has a loss to a Gibraltar team of amateurs, that would be br.
As for how well br does, we will see in the playoff rounds, fortunately 4 br he's been allowed 2 break up the trouble makers which 4 me has made a big difference already.
3 0 I reckon 2night 4 the hoops, this mob r there 4 the taking, and like all Celtic fans I want br to do great at Celtic but still early doors. Hail hail.

I wonder when R D will have left and when B R will have settled into normality as our Manager . I would imagine when he does it won't be one broad stroke of the brush that will cover all the players . Some, probably many will react best to words of encouragement spreading confidence and maybe one or two will play better if they feel their position on the team is under pressure and they have to up their game to keep their positions
We just need B R to get his selections right tonight and players perform at their best.

I've been having debates with many of you this week about transfers et al but now it's all about the game. I heard a soundbite of BR on the radio in which he said "We'll be looking to win the game but we're not going to be stupid about it". For me that's the perfect approach to tonight. Astana are a decent and capable team but we're better overall and while it would be nice to score a couple and put the tie to bed, it's not a necessity and we'd be foolish to go gung-ho. Tonight has to be about cool, calm heads concentrating on just getting the job done but if we can do it with style, even better! HH COYBIG.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

03 Aug 2016 10:42:06
Defo kev, Astana have to come at us so keeping it tight at the back is key. Hopefully catch em on the break.
Have to say I'm confident tho I think we have enough on the park and in the stands to progress.

Agree2 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 11:26:15
only problem I see is that the longer the game goes without us scoring the more the crowd will get on the players backs. I'm hoping for a quick goal to settle everyone down and really get the atmosphere going.

Agree1 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 11:49:25
An early goal to settle the nerves is the ideal scenario but I think the fact they need to score will hopefully leave them exposed at the back. Their main threat comes from their lightning quick winger (who we could probably do worse than looking at btw) and set pieces which are always troublesome for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 12:34:15
As long as we are through I don't care the score or how we perform really.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 12:52:37
An early goal will do me fine also keeping it tight at the back is a must.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 16:22:15
For me we need 2 start quick, high tempo and pressing them back, and attack them as they are very suspect at the back and full back areas. Get the ball 2 Roberts as often as possible n go 4 a couple of goals in quick succession and put the tie 2 bed, they score 1 goal then there's trouble n the fans may start 2 to get on the players backs etc. For me we have to win this game, forget the 1st leg score and just win the game.
Again we have it in us to give them a right drubbing, 3 nil I reckon, if we start right from the off. Hail hail.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 18:15:27
Brendan Rodgers is not going to declare his hand on the radio or any other media before the match . Our defence is weakened and I expect Celtic to try to own procession of the ball as far away from our goals as possible . Without over reaching ourselves we must not get involved with a back to the wall situation. If we do we are likely to concede a goal or two.

Agree2 Disagree1

03 Aug 2016 09:54:16
Aye the scottish media would have got plenty mileage out that wee headline, av never heard a manager say a result was embarrassing it's not good management, sevcos managers would have been using it every second week.

Agree1 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 10:33:07
Beav of course he ain't going to come out and say its embarrasing, efe is a bombscare and broonys way off the pace, BR was brought in to improve the players and team. Everyone i would hope can see that the morale of our players is very low, fans continually turning on them ain't helping, an absolute disgrace what happened to efe in the Barcelona game. the way i see it if BR was to go out and say that it would just be 10 times worse, seems to me the gaffers the only one defending us.

Agree1 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 10:47:14
BR is doing what he's best at and that's man management. Brown has been poor in recent months but to me it seems a confidence thing. You don't just stop being a good player and although plenty of us are on browns back i personally still rate him and I'd love to see him back to his best.
HH.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 11:36:19
That's the problem but bhoywonder! BR has been in the job less than 3 months and he's had to defend ambrose how many times! He shouldn't be anywhere near celtic park in the first place for BR to have to defend! And Browns been woeful for the past couple of years now! I realise the manager can't come out and slaughter them but after that red imps game maybe that's what they needed! I know what he says in public and in the dressing room will be different. but it pisses me off that the manager has to defend these players in the first place! And ambrose is the perfect example! There is no exuse or reason for that clown to still be at our club! anyway that's my rant over for now! Haha! going tonite and hope we do the business! πŸ€πŸ€πŸ€πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ».

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 12:36:13
beav81 totally agree about ambrose but give our defence time we do actually have some quality there when all fit as for brown not the player he used to be but he does have one thing which is his leadership espescially when the young lads heads go down which was a regular thing under deila.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Aug 2016 13:25:26
Agree Alan there is quality in there and with hopefully a few additions will be even stronger. and I also know when everyone's fit that ambrose won't get a sniff. just really frustrating seeing our last 2 managers having to start there reigns with this guy anywhere near the squad never mind the starting 11! I would throw big toure in there next to o'connell tonite! Naturally fit guy so I would have no doubts about him coming in.

Brown has and continues to give us great service to Celtic . It is fitting and right for our Manager to talk up our captain in the week of an important European match . Brown may be a bit sluggish recovering from last season injuries but surely Gerard had no excuse for giving the goal away to Chelsea and costing his team their first ever EPL title . To some Gerard is still a God and Brown is rubbish Why?
