Hooper hasn't even scored a goal in the epl, I am sure he is thinking why the **** did I leave Glasgow celtic for this?
Anyone think a wee £3.5m would see him back at celtic park in jan?
Stephen

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No returns please, he's made his bed.

Agree0 Disagree0

I actually agree with you Bobo. People are talking about McGeady coming back. F RIGHT OFF! We need a goalscorer. Jan window might suit everyone.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hooper was given every opportunity to stay and made his choice. I'm annoyed that this has backfired on both parties.
Hooper is not our problem any more but the gap that was left when he bolted should have been filled more efficiently.

JJ

Agree0 Disagree0

Hooper was an amazing fluke. Three goalfest seasons from a cheap striker that should never have happened. The problem now is the board think they can replicate that fluke which isn't possible. £2m strikers just don't give £6m performances and it'll prove impossible to find the same again. The only solution is to spend.

Agree0 Disagree0

@ No 4 sssssssssssssshhh.
its about choosing the correct guy not just about spending cash

We have found ourselves in a position that when Chris is out there is no imagination. I love Lenny but I think he views midfielders like the player he was and we need some lubo magic.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Commons and Forster are our two best consistent players. Sammy isn't as consistent.
There's other good players.

Agree0 Disagree0

We have been short of creativity for a while and miss Commons badly.
The midfield is packed with work-horses and we lack spontaneity and flair as well as the obvious 25/30 goal striker.

Whats happened to Gary Hooper. He is just not cutting it at Norwich. Still feel he made the wrong decision to leave. Julieghirl.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He's earning loads more and obviously got a big signing on fee/ or % of the transfer fee.
Ed, what's the % players get of their transfer fees as a sweetener to move? {Ed007's Note - It doesn't work like that any more. Everything is already laid out in the player's contract with the selling club and agreed as a signing fee in the new contract with the buying club. There is no set percentage and with so many financial factors involved in a transfer these days where everything is individually negotiated, there isn't even anything to use as a guideline. Football transfers are far more financially complicated than 99% of supporters think they are.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Thats what I've been saying, don't believe for one minute that pukki cost 3M and balde 2M probs the whole layout of the transfer,, its to keep the fans happy to say it cost this and that. {Ed007's Note - There are taxes, agents fees, taxes on agents fees, residual insurances, relocation expenses, arrangement fees all to be considered in addition to the transfer fee and then the wages.}

On today's display we will have to play much better to take something from the game in Amsterdam. However, Ajax lost 1-0 to Vitesse and they were playing the strongest side they could. Positives are that Samaras, Commons and Kayal were rested today so will be very fresh for Wednesday. It is also great that we don't have to go over there and attack them. We can let Ajax come on to us and then play against them on the counter attack. The team I would play against them is in a 'False 9' sort of formation with Commons furthest advanced: Forster; Lustig, Ambrose, van Dijk, Izaguirre; Boerrigter, Kayal, Mulgrew, Ledley, Samaras; Commons

Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'm not really up to these 'false 9' etc formations but do you not need a striker? We would be playing without a recognised Centre Forward with this line-up (don't get me wrong, i'm not saying this is a bad thing).

We were not great today either so I don't want to focus too much on Ajax's result.

We need to improve on set pieces, last season this was one of our strengths in the CL. {Ed007's Note - The best example of a False 9 is the system Messi was used in Guardiola's Barcelona team. It was invented back in the 1930's by Austria and as Tata is showing with his use of Fabregas it hopefully will be consigned to the history books again very soon.
Without patronising you Mrs if you think of where Rooney plays for Man Utd (No.10 role) just behind their main striker (No.9 role) RVP but without RVP in the team, there is nobody in front of the No.10 position so it is up to Rooney to get the ball and get himself and the ball forward.
If it works it is a joy to watch but if it doesn't it is just the dire tappy-tappy passing with no penetration in the team that a lot of Barca games ended up as.
To play as a False 9 you need certain abilities and physical attributes, people like Messi and Rooney are naturally built for it with their low centre of gravity and physical strength (preferably natural strength like Rooney and not doctor-administered like Messi's).You need to be tactically aware and have a high level of concentration during matches accompanied by speed. Passing ability, dribbling and quality finishing from both short and long range are also prerequisites of playing the position.
Wasn't there a national outcry when Craig Levein played with no strikers? It will be a sad day if a CFC team EVER takes to the field without a striker in the team, a very sad day indeed.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes when Levein played 4-6-0 against the Czech Republic, I still stand by my opinion that he should have been sacked for gross misconduct!

I know Spain have played this way but Fabregas, Silva, Iniesta, Xavi etc are on a different planet to a Scotland 4-6-0 but Spain also received criticism for it. Is this a 'false 9' formation?

I don't think Neil Lennon will play without a Centre Forward. agreed, it would be a very bad day! {Ed007's Note - Yes Spain played it as well with Fabregas in the False 9 role. As you say, you need a few very special players for it to have any chance of working.}

Just had a look at the tv planner for the week and was looking forward to watching the Ajax game. Now I find that its on Sly 4. What the hell are STV playing at? Are they not meant to be the broadcaster for Scotland? I don't want to watch Man Utd. Now I've got to find a pub to watch it in which means more money. Absolute sh*te second rate tv from that crap channel. Its the only time I ever switch the sh*te on my telly when the hoops are on.
Dire!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Stv don't have 2 pound to run together these days and can't afford it, at one point they were threatened with having programmes withdrew by itv set when they didn't pay.

Agree0 Disagree0

Itv/stv are only contracted to show tue night CL games.

Simply not good enough. Another game with plenty of attempts at goal but with a severe lack of shots on target and of course a severe lack of goals.

Lennon needs to sort this out ASAP, sure were top of the league, a poor league at that and reality is we should be winning every game.

Totally fed up with these inept performances and we need to sign a GOALSCORING striker in January.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Who in reality do you think we could afford transfer fee and wages the only goal scorer I can think of is Jordan Rhodes
Gordybhoy44

Agree0 Disagree0

If anybody suggests georg cadet as a striker coach I'll go nuts. Its major surgery we need not a sticking plaster.
Stokes on three years contract so should get decent money for him before his price drops. Sell stokes, Watt, Puki and balde and buy two new £5m guys.
Radical repositioning needed. £20m+ from CL this year, striking needs radical qualitative overhaul.

Agree0 Disagree0

The board thinking economics from two decades ago, let's buy two £2m guys and hope one of them comes good is just amateurish. It can never be left to hoping or taking risk. It must be investing in certainty.

Agree0 Disagree0

Surely Johnny Russell and the Hibs guy last season (SPL top goal scorer) would have been miles better and cheaper than Puki and balde. They've really had long enough its November now almost half way stage. The foregone knowledge hooper was leaving and Lennon's planned response to that has been poor from the manager. Don't blame the board this time they spent millions.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree striking is a problem but the centre midfield is dire brown and Ledley are so lacking in creativity, that is making our play predictable so first buy for me is creative player

More squandered chances and now we are behind!
We always have to score at least 2 to win a game this season and we rarely seem a team that has goals to spare so it will take a superb effort in the 2nd half.
Plenty of possession/pressure but gie's a goal Bhoys!
At least the bench has a bit more experience today.
COYBIG!

Afternoon Ed007, looking forward to a really good game, expecting a five goal thriller ( either way ) . The team selection again and formation will be key, nl for me has'nt had his strongest team together for more than 5 or 6 games if that, for one reason or another this is why I think we sometimes look disjointed at times ( a bit like my posts ) looking forward to the comments on the game. ps I think we'll need to score 3 for the win cheers.

Not posted in a while but really looking forward to the game today. Once again the main interest for me will be the team.I think Commons will get an hour, Lenny will see him as a key player in Amsterdam I would imagine, but who else will play? Forrest or/and, Sammi? Brown is a cert but there's decisions to be made for sure.So far Lenny seems to be using the same core before and after Champions League games and it is working, but will the chance of a draw, or dare I say it a win, in Holland alter his thinking?

I think the fact we are playing Dundee Utd will help both Lenny in selecting his team, and the team themselves. This should be a game of football. Jackie seems to have them playing nice stuff and their hardly full of hammer throwers, they will come and play I am sure. This will allow us to up our own game.We seem to be playing a more concentrated style at the moment, more ball retention, but our front players movement has not really clicked yet.Today against a good footballing side might just be the catalyst we need.Thats got to be on Lenny's mind.

On the front players I see Pukki has had some clog.I honestly think he has looked better every game.I think he is a a clever player who, when fully bedded in, might do a great job for us.Maybe Commons in will be a bonus for him as he is capable of slipping players in and that seems to be his game. The problem with the buys has been simple. They are competing with big Virgil! This guy has started so well I would think lots of us are wondering how long he will be here, it's crossed my mind watching him.

A quick mention for Rickson. Dreadfully sad news of his illness.I am sure everyone wishes him the very best in this terrible battle he faces.

@GJ good to hear from you again, today's game was just as I expected, especially with the weather. Some of our players looked to be thinking of Ajax game and protecting themselves with minimal effort at times.
Did you read Mrs E's post along same lines of yours?
My feeling is that Balde, Boerighter, Pukki and Biton will all benefit from extra game time and hopefully be bedded in as strong squad members for NEXT season. All 4 show promise but must start doing it on a more regular basis.
Mrs E on Samaras, he frustrates us all, we all know what he is capable of but can be a lazy sod also. If he goes to Seville, I hope we sell him in January and make a couple of million rather than lose him for nothing in the summer.
I want Ledley tied up with a new contract as I feel to replace him would cost us an arm and a leg.
GJ we must trust Lennon and PL that good replacements are lined up for next 2 windows.
As for Wednesday I would take a draw now, but if worse comes to worse and Ajax win we must hope it is only 1-0 which would still keep us ahead in our head to head with Ajax (2-2 but we scored more goals) yes we will be a point behind them but hopefully can make that up in remaining games. Timalloy

Last season the Centre Half situation bothered me, now its the Centre Forward!

We are crying out for a penalty box striker. Nae herm to Stokes, I like him but we just need someone that bit better than him. A right poacher.

£15m at least this season from CL football, the purse strings better be loosened in January. C'mon Celtic
