Celtic win the league playing against 3 of the guy that they were playing upfront tonight .Please tell me how tonight's team is better than the teams that were fielded last season.
Am I missing something?

Imagine someone telling socrates he's not getting a game because he smokes 40 cigs a day, imagine a manager who says to best, no more football for you boy you were drunk last night and didn't eat your weetibix this morning, imagine a manager saying to Maradona, hi boy your carrying to much weight so I've no place for you. Imagine no more, we have that guy with his side kicks Collins and Mc Guinness.
Life is hard enough with governments and corporations creating clones without bringing into our entertainment also.
Summary is ,fudge your talent and individuality play to my system.
Nice 1 celtic football club!.

maybe we could get a cigar room and have a card school instead of daily training ,go for a piss up the night before a game , followed by a full fry up breakfast the morning of the game and that will make the players into clones of Socrates best and maradonna

I have nothing to ad regarding the game tonight, but I get your point. In Scotland you always had to be tall to play football. Why? the goals were massive and the boys were tiny. Now you have to be an athlete. What happened to being a footballer. Look at sir Walter giving gazza a half before a game. A great footballer doesn't have to be An athlete. And I also agree with your point with 3 Utd players. Look at the rumours site we are being linked with Souter and Allan imagine for a second we sign those 2. We could start a league game with 4 guys who this time last year were playing for Utd and 1 for hibs. So not a comment from tonight just a long time disillusionment with the way we are all being treated by CFC.s lack of ambition.

TTTS. Are you actually suggesting Socrates wouldn't be better without smoking? Or Best without drinking? C'mon man. We were well behind the times with fitness and nutrition. Again last night we showed that we looked stronger than our opponents in the latter stages of the game.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I think TTTS is missing the point. Socrates and Best would not be signing for Celtic, which is why the players need to be fitter and stronger than their opponents to have a chance. The truly world class talents, who can get away with being out of shape, just aren't clamouring to play in Scotland. As the technique is of a lower level, they will make more mistakes when they get tired, making them fitter lessens those mistakes and so helps to lower the gap in technique between top teams and lesser talented teams.}

30 Jul 2015 08:51:50
This is 2015. There's no coach I can think of that would let their player smoke 5 cigs a day never mind 40. Think of how the youth would think of that. If he can smoke and play I can too. Also how much better would these guys have been if they had a decent diet and healthier living. It's a fact that a healthier life will improve fitness put that with already having the football skills and you'll have an all round better footballer

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Jul 2015 08:59:15
Did you go a bit 'funny' last night after some dancing juice. Do you think Celtic would be better if more players were fat and smoked? I understand players like commons are never going to be super fit, but obviously it makes sense to have them in peak condition. If best was an athlete he'd have played for United past 27, and maradona bit have been even better without the coke habit! Other than that. GREAT POINT!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - could you imagine how good Maradona would have been if he had lived clean and worked harder in training??? There would be no debate at all about who was the greatest footballer of all time then! He would have been unstoppable.}

30 Jul 2015 10:15:02
Well that was another point I was thinking Ed. We haven't exactly produced Socrates or Bests since the 1960s. So something has to change. Our future players are in good hands I think. But we need a better side NOW. If Nadir Ciftci, or Griffiths and Scepovic for that matter are what we view as strikers to lead us into the CL then we're automatically giving ourselves a hard time.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - youth development requires long term thinking, it takes ten years to truly show any effect. It is a long hard road to get that part of the club to compete with the best.}

30 Jul 2015 12:00:24
I know mate. Hence why the methods we're putting in place have to last. Whether RD stays on as coach, or steps into the backroom, or goes completely, we have to stick to what he has given us. I said in a post yesterday I think he has already given us a legacy more than most coaches we've ever had.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Jul 2015 15:18:03
To reply, my point is we have a manager who is so rigid in his approach and tactics that any young lad coming through would have any form of individualism drummed out of them hence never developing it to something special. It's a sad time not just in football but from when a child first enters school they are taught repeatations not expression.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Jul 2015 23:59:32
Think you are missing the point Ed,if Best or Socrates or Marradonna where at Celtic ,do you think RD would put them in the team.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - of course he would. Why do people want to ask stupid questions like that? Celtic quite simply do not have anyone with any real pace or ability, which is why you go all cuckoo over Kris Commons, who has been shown as an average waster in the English leagues.}

31 Jul 2015 12:24:09
So his rigid regime only apply to some? BTW no fan of commons and accept the standard of football in Scotland isn't great but quite a few guys down south running around with their heads up their ar$es thinking their wee murdoch poisoned league is the best in the world

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - what on earth is this bitter rant all about? I was saying he would play them, not that he would excuse them from training or not expect them to work at their game too. As for that crap on the end, it is typical childish idiocy that shows how clueless some of you Scots are, when you destroyed your own league with the Premier League and the English one was merely following your example. But you go ahead and blame it on everyone else, it just makes you look pathetic and bitter, like Balotelli. Celtic are every bit as much to blame as anyone else for the greed is good that has taken over the sport, certainly more so than the prick Murdoch, who merely took advantage of the greed. If you had not destroyed your league with the stupidity of the SPL, you might have a product worth someone showing on TV. As for best in the world, who cares?}

31 Jul 2015 17:54:21
I'm not Scottish

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - nor am I, what is your point? Is it that you are proving that you are bitter enough to pick a team based on reasons other than football? Or is that you are showing that you can't understand that it means fans of Scottish football rather than Scottish nationals?}

01 Aug 2015 07:20:59
Ive been supporting celtic since I saw a guy called John Dixie Deans slapping in goals for fun and the instant love for a hooped jersey,wasn't influenced by others in any way. To suggest it was for other reasons is the sort of thing I heard on a daily basis and learned to disregard it as ignorance.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - suggest or ask? Because I just asked a question and gave more than one option, so you could pick which it was. Only thing ignorant is to be unable to read and so make assumptions based on a lack of understanding.}

29 Jul 2015 23:07:16
I appreciate we are only just starting out on the euro trail , but it seems to me that with all the 1.5-2 million pound strikers we seem to purchase we really get found out in Europe . We have all said it before but we really should be paying out a bit more for a more dangerous forward. I understand if we pay more for a player it ultimately means higher wages but if he was to score the goals to get us into the group stages it pays for itself. It's virtually impossible to find a forward for 1.5 million who makes a difference at a higher level. I think lg, nc kc have enough goals in them for the domestic scene but we could really do with someone who scores a goal out of nothing . The better standard we play the less of the ball we will see , so we really need a clinical striker. Hopefully we have done enough to help us through the second leg. Hail hail

evening ed

Just back from match. Decent result (in light of the 90 minutes). The opposition were well organised; easy to identify their set up - basically 2 "always" in a straight line on either side giving celtic literally no width and all over Johanssen. This meant that Brown was the only player on the park with tonnes of space (I think they intended to create that situation) unfortunately Brown isn't creative nor is he great at exploring space for himself. The MOTM (Biton) was subbed after around 70 minutes and still landed the award!

VVD was a stand out for me. Up top, Ciftci was decent enough but we didn't ever look like scoring from open play. My mate said after 15 minutes, this is 0-0 unless we get get some corners and set pieces because they don't compete in the air. How right was he. They were hopeless in the air all over the park and we get the goal from a corner. Delivery all night was decent, we simply didn't deliver enough in to the box. Could have been a different affair had we increased the corner count!

I remain unconvinced by the players up top in the system we deploy. GMS is more of a winger and yet Armstrong is the opposite. Armstrong good in possession ( but no winger), whereas GMS is clumsy in possession but at least gets the legs going and has a go when the opportunity presents itself. Ciftci will not be a goal machine for CFC (I know its early but he doesn't have the knack as far as I can tell). I hope I'm wrong. We wasn't poor tonight but I didn't see a goal in him.

I find CFC very predictable at the moment; there is very limited creativity. Creative players pick that pinpoint pass or go for the give and go or draw free-kicks. We don't have one to hurt teams at this level.

Overall, this is in the balance. Have RD improved from last year? Yes. Are we good enough to make it difficult for CL standard opponents; not by a long shot.

Big applause for VVD, thought he was super this evening (barring one wee mistake). Gordon remains somewhat of an enigma. Didn't have a lot to do this evening but what little he did have to do, he didn't do particularly well.

3 signings required. left back and goal scoring striker who can link up . plus creativity for the right side

We are way short of the standard expected in Europe, for a Celtic team and the difference between this squad and the one WGS assembled, when the cost-cutting was originally implemented is frightening.
Strachan had a tight budget and had to manage a total transition within the club and still managed to attract and sign some very good players that were European pedigree.
We have went backwards since then in our ambition and ability and the current Celtic, make qualification look difficult and possibly unlikely and even if we do progress, we will probably look, sadly out of place.
I have had reservations about the direction we are headed for a while and when around 30% of the team is signed from a mid-table rival, it does not ease my concerns.

Agree2 Disagree0

30 Jul 2015 10:18:09
Strachan had the right idea. He struck a balance between youth, scots, and european and international experience. What I would do for a Hinkel or a JVoH.

Thought that was a decent result against quite a good team. As much as the 'football Oracle's' around me claimed they were a pub team, they were actually quite useful. Never kicked it long and were quick on the break and good in possession.

Was a bit disappointed Celtic had a couple of chances to put balls in after the goal but were happy to hold on for 1-0.

Johansen and Armstrong were poor. Bit wasteful in possession, was really impressed with their big number 55 at centre back. Think we could score away from home, if they get to half time at 0-0 then they can hit them on the break!

So far we've bought Ciftci and we're apparently looking at Kramer too. I remember last season and the season before we were linked with Soriano from Salzburg who would score more goals than those two put together. He would be an amazing signing and surely we have the finances to get him. Hit a mean free kick against us in EL too. I can dream.

Believable1 Unbelievable2

29 Jul 2015 12:47:15
Ed any idea what sort of wages he's on? I liked that Alan as well both looked quality can't see the Austrian league paying much more than us

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I don't know exactly what he's on but he was looking for 20k Euros p.w. when he was leaving Barca and Udinese offered 14k Euros p.w. I'd take a guess that he's on 16/18k Euros p.w.}

29 Jul 2015 13:44:38
I'd have them both in a heart beat. It's so saddenning when folk on here can suggest great targets, that ARE affordable yet the club rarely go for them.

Agree1 Disagree0

29 Jul 2015 14:39:50
Like I've said umpteen times,we've got the money and can afford these players,but just won't buy them! But PL still maintains we're a champions league team! Saddening is the word Jim! See that's another strip out again! Yet more money getting put into the club! Yet we still shop in the bargain basement for players! I've said it on here more than once and I'll say it again! If we fail yet again to make the CL then lawells future surely has to be questioned! Might sound harsh but just the way I feel! And it's based on not just one transfer window but the last 5 or 6! We've had more than enough chances to learn our lesson on buying mediocre strikers and expecting them to do it in Europe! But we haven't! The fans aren't being fooled! We deserve a better calibre of player being brought in!

Agree1 Disagree1

29 Jul 2015 15:39:46
It's certainly not managements fault Dh. It could well be PL, but he is good at what he does. My feelings are that it may be the major shareholders that aren't stumping up. If I had their money, as a 'fan', I'd be pumping millions into the club for the fun of it. X
