THIS Saturday, March 1, Celtic will take on Inverness Caley Thistle in a fixture which will be taking place almost 20 years to the day since a certain Fergus McCann took the reins at Celtic, and put the foundations in place to ensure we continued to exist as a world-class football club.

Fergus will be our very special guest on the opening match of next season, a day we will all look forward to, but we’re sure the Celtic faithful will cast their minds back this Saturday and think fondly of the then unknown Celtic supporter who swept in and saved the club.

Fast forward 20 years and the club are at the top of the Scottish game, now playing in a world-renowned stadium, and competing regularly on club football’s biggest stage, the UEFA Champions league, against teams such as Barcelona, Manchester United and AC Milan.

On Saturday, we will celebrate the role Fergus McCann and our fans played in ensuring Celtic’s continued success.

As well as a special matchday programme which looks back at the time of the takeover, there will be video memories of the days in 1994 when Fergus arrived with contributions from many figures of the time and former Chairman Brian Quinn will address all those attending to offer his thanks to Fergus and our supporters.

And the man himself has delivered a personal message to the Celtic support for the day:

He wrote:
"I appreciate the club marking the occasion of 20 years since the takeover.

In 1989 the process did not begin as a takeover. But by 1992 it became clearly the best way forward.

I want to thank the financing partners who joined me and had faith in my plan especially John Keane and Albert Friedberg, the colleagues who worked tirelessly collecting shares and proxies and challenging the entrenched ‘custodians’ and most of all the many concerned supporters who campaigned and held the Board and the Bank publicly accountable.

This was followed by the supporters stepping forward in great numbers by investing in Celtic’s future with their hard-earned cash at a level never seen for a football club before or since because of the importance of the Club in their lives.

Like them, I care greatly for the values and history of the club that was founded for noble purposes to help fund the penny dinner tables of the poor in Glasgow’s East End.

I am very proud when I see Celtic’s progress, its status in Scotland, and its worldwide reputation. Especially when I see the great work of Celtic FC Foundation carrying on the legacy of Brother Walfrid.

Every supporter wants success for Celtic. That does not mean winning every game and beating every opponent, big or small.

It does mean having a Club that is the best it can possibly be, on and off the field, that never accepts second best, despite the obstacles it has had to overcome throughout its history.

Celtic supporters want to be proud of their Club. That’s all they want.
It is what they deserve."

To mark the occasion we will also have a number of activities planned around the matchday schedule, including a small trip down memory lane within our popular Family Stand area.

On display will be a number of historical pieces which not only represent Fergus’ time at the club, but also some items dating back to the club’s very first season in competition back in 1888.

Included is the scale model which represented Fergus’s vision for the 60,000 all-seater stadium we see before us today, an replica match shirt from 1888, the European Cup won so famously in 1967, a copy of the official Celtic Opus – and the "bunnet" which became synonymous with Fergus during his time here.

There will also be a vast backdrop on display, which charts 126 years of Celtic history, tradition and success from 1888 to the present day.

Saturday’s mini-exhibition will be in place from 1.30pm until the 3pm kick-off at the Family Stand, which is situated within sections 115 – 117 of the Lisbon Lions stand.

If Celtic could sign 1 player and money was no object who would you want.

For me it would be Ronaldo

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Most people will probably say Ronaldo or Messi so I'm going to think outside the box a bit Ian and name 3 players who I think would completely transform our team and would certainly make us a lot stronger in the Champions League.

I've taken the values from transfermarkt.

1. Neven Subotic (CB from Borussia Dortmund) £17,500, 00
2. Arturo Vidal (Box to box MF from Juventus) £38,500,000
3. Gonzalo Higuain (ST from Napoli) £33,500,000

Obviously none of them will happen - but we can all dream!

Right i'm changing the subject guys. Everyone seems a bit deflated with the club, board etc.

We needed to add a few more players than we did in january. Who would you like to see brought in, in the summer?

Personaly I would prefer if a few were sold and we brought a few of our youth lads into the first team. watt and mcgregor especially. These two guys are obviously very talented. oh and rogic aswell. But i'm not sure we will see him after the world cup, which is ashame because from what I have seen he is a decent player when played in his natural position.

My team for next season.

Forster (maybe)

lustig ambrose vvd izzy

mathews brown johanson commons

griffiths watt

subs, stokes, mcgregor, biton, mulgrew, forrest, zaluska.

not my ideal team but that's along the lines of what I think we will be hit with. decent core I suppose but think we should be aiming a bit higher tbh. We should get rid of some of the dead weight in our team and replace with with some decent homegrown talent. I not sure we need or should be dipping into the transfer maket when we have lennoxtown.

I'd punt Stokes, Boerrigter, Mouyokolo and Forrest. Would rather the youths got a chance than these four.

Hamitonbhoy thanks for reminding me Mouyokolo is still with us ha ha

Does anyone think that we could try and sign Bojan from Barcelona in the summer. He has not really lived up to his early potential but he is still a good player. Hearing Barce looking to sell for about 5 to 8 million euros. don't know how much truth there is in that or how much he is paid weekly probably around 50 -60k a week which is way out of our price range but you never know stranger things have happend.

Also heard about the rumours linking big Forster with Barca both Madrid clubs nd Ac milan among others don't think it will happen but if it were how much do you realistically think Celtic would get for him. I think if we play hard ball we could get around 9mil+ but we will probs sell for around 6-8mil.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Thought he would have been a big star by now but just never happened.
Very difficult to get into that team, although 'Fibreglass' from Arsenal managed to get it in, in front of him.
Somehow under Lennon we don't seem to be looking at skill-full ball players as much as we should, but I am all in favour of Celtic signing creative and entertaining players.

I can scarcely believe the fallout from the aberdeen game, towards lennon, the team, van dijk, the referee. So what - we got beat, we lost a couple of goals what is the big deal?

As far as i'm concerned the unbeaten and clean sheet runs were becoming a hinderance to our progress as a club. At the end of the day - who really cares if we make it through a SPFL season unbeaten. I'd much rather see us rotate the team, give fringe and young players a chance and get ourselves in better shape for the UCL qualifiers.

Guys like Calvin Miller, Fillip Twardzik, Amido, Fridjohnsson, Pukki, Griffiths, and many others need to be given a run and a chance. the league is won so let's try out a few different things - who cares if we lose a couple of games. And Forster for me needs to be taken down a peg or two - he is still far from convincing at cross balls as we saw twice at tynecastle recently. i'd like to see zaluska get a run for a few games, what would we do if forster got injured or (more likely) sold - we'd need to rely on a keeper that has barely played for 3 years.

We should be using this time to experiment a bit, weed out weak players - blood in youngsters. Even in a few of the games recently we've sat on 1-0 wins as if trying to protect a clean sheet record - nonsense as far as i'm concerned, would much rather see us win 4-2 or 5-3 or something.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I complelty agree with all points made. I think lennon wanted this unbeaten season for his own personal gratification, I for one am glad it has gone. If lennon had of played the strongest 11 all season to ensure we went unbeaten then we would of had a team of knackered players.

With the qualifiers starting so early for us we need to be contantly rotating the squad, the players on the fringes of the starting 11 should be good enough to win. If not then simple, get rid ASAP.

If we fail to qualify next season I don't want to here the old excuses of it was a long season last year and with these qualifiers we have started so early. The board decided to play a meaningless tournament mid season which was pointless and lennon hasn't given much of the starting 11 a rest either.

Agree0 Disagree0

The unbeaten run became a burden that was too heavy for this team.
The manger made it a priority as each of our other 'priorities' fell by the wayside and it was all that was left to prove something to himself.
It is no coincidence that Lennon saw it as a personal competition with Slug McSteakbake and the vast majority of supporters would have preferred at least one more trophy and to be still in Europe in some capacity.
As far as blooding youngsters, we have let far too many go out on loan while refusing to play Balde, Pukki and Boerighter (when fit) while sticking by players who are off form or maybe carrying knocks (Brown, Commons and Stokes for a while there).
The squad has never really been utilised for most of this season and that's why many fans are worried about next season.
