Guys, we have the best goalie since bonner, (Boruc was good but he did have a few howlers), Forster doesn't. We have the best defence in a decade easily. We have the best midfield options for a long time, and in Commons the best attacking midfielder since Moravcik/Petrov. Ok our strikers could be better for CL but for domestic competitions are good enough.Only areas of concern to me is a top class striker and cover at the back, and our youth players could be better. A lot on here saying give them a chance. Not for me unless they good enough, remember Stein said our jersey doesn't shrink to fit. Only young players I have seen good enough are Henderson/Watt. Forrest is a prime example of playing young players who not good enough.Before everyone has a go at Lennon about the youth talent you can coach and train them all day but they got to want it and want it bad otherwise they don't cut it RE Watt. So its not all doom and gloom lol. A top striker can make a huge difference to any team as he bangs in the goals. Just see Manchester United this wk when RVP scorin a hat trick it made them look a different team.3 in a row, consistent CL campaigners we would a bitten your hand off for that when Lennon 1st took over so let's get some perspective guys.

I agree with a lot of your post rayman, but everyone can see the squad is slowly getting weaker and if as expected Forster and Virgil do a runner in the summer where does that leave us? This summer will settle a lot of arguments on here about what the clubs ambitions are. If the above two go we will bring in another 12-15 million I would imagine so there can be no excuses for not spending a reasonable amount. As has been said on here our wage structure needs revised to attract quality players. One example that Ed 007 flagged up was the boy Hunt at Werder Bremen, I totally agree that this is the type we need to be bringing in, I know it was youtube but he looks a player and two footed aswell (a rarity in the modern game) I believe his contract is up and would be looking for £30,000 a week (I'm just stealing ed's earlier post here ) but I think we need to give up on the 1.5 mill signings on 10,000 a week, but there again the boy Biton looks a player, ah feck I give up I don't know what's needed

Agree0 Disagree0

It`s not that we are not spending (to a point), we are not spending wisely. Trawling for hidden gems is a risk, look at the number of players coming in. If they don`t warrant a first team slot, then why were they bought? Remember the old chestnut "no point in buying if they are no better than what we have"?? A few QUALITY additions would raise the all round standard and anyone moaning about more money would be told to prove they deserve it or sod off. We need to stop trying to live off the past and start justifying where we DESERVE to be in the future.

{Ed007's Note - Well said, I couldn't agree more Chasa.}

I only talking of where we are the now. can't legislate for possible outs and ins, if Forster and VVD go? Then we get messi and Ronaldo lol.

Nice one Stevie. not planning on much sleeping though. was going to head for the Rock Bar but our company is a wee bit mixed so maybe not the best idea. maybe sneak up there myself though

I was disappointed to read that Lennon is looking at bringing in 5 players during the summer. I just wish that he had the cahonas to blood about 4 or 5 of the young ones into the team. There are some great looking youth players that should be given a chance. I remember when Fergie did it at Man Utd with Butt, Beckham, Nevilles etc. Maybe this is our time.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Red Devil, The development of our youth players is an area of concern. I can see why they don't get played - they aren't good enough and have not developed much in the past few seasons.

Maybe not a fair comparison but you look at Raheem Stirling under Brendan Rodgers, he's 19, a winger but Rodgers wasn't afraid to play him in the middle (the point of a diamond shape in midfield - I'm not good with modern football shapes lol) with his pace and no fear attitude, your defenders were being pulled away from Sturridge and Suarez. Our Manager would never do this and we can afford to try it more than Liverpool can against Man Utd.

Lennon has played Forrest (who could be described as a creative player and has pace) in some games this season in the middle but he's 22 now and it's too little too late and it's not done right. Some Liverpool fans hadn't been happy with Stirling but Rodgers had clear plans for him and you could see them. Forrest has been injured but there's been no definite plan or development for him under Lennon. He's an example of a youth player you could have experimented more with but now he's on the receiving end of get him tae.

Regardless of the talent, as you say, with Alex Ferguson you knew the plan and you can see what Brendan Rodgers is trying to do at Liverpool. I don't see that at Celtic with our youth.

Not saying I'm a fan of players being played out of position but these Managers have a knack of making it work and part of player development.

It's called having a tactically aware manager Mrs E, a manager that can watch half an hour of a game and say this is not working and change things. This is a thing Celtic don't have, Lennons tactics consist of if it's not working after 70 mins throw the Greek Tragedy on and hope for the best

Agree0 Disagree0

Maybe Stevie, remember the last Old Firm game and Lennon went with a kinda 3-5-2, it was full on attack and lovely to watch and we all thought - aye, this is good!

It seems to have gone back the way and the complacency is unforgivable.

Anyone seen the ridiculous story in one of todays rags that we're battling Deadco for the signature of Macheda of Man Utd. Talking of Man Utd I think the aggregate score in their CL quarter could be embarrassing

I was having a think earlier about the Scottish Cup and was wondering what everyone else thought. Would you have preferred to be in the Scottish Cup final, playing against Sevco and losing or going out to Aberdeen and not having the embarrassment of being beat in our own camp, in a final, by a wee diddy team?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I would have taken my chances in the final.

We've been beat before by diddy teams - upsets happen in these one-off games.

Just had brief convo with Phil Mac and god that man is frustrating he gets too emotive and is quite an attention seeker sometimes to boot. Don't think he got my point. But I think it is a perfectly valid one to raise apologies for the length.

This is about the supposed offence (the emotion/feeling, not the offence as in crime as much) that is caused by the singing of certain songs and chants and general racism in football grounds and life in general.

I should point out Racism, bigotry, sectarianism or whatever you want to call it is deplorable in any shape or form. And should not be spouted by any human being towards another regardless of any supposed reason.

We have to consider what people want to gain by spouting the nonsense that they do whether it be a jibe based on skin colour, religion or what colour of socks you happen to wear.

The form of offence shown by certain people is exactly what these Neanderthals want, they want a reaction! They want a reaction that causes the person receiving the abuse to retaliate with their own Jibes, feel pain, mess up or make equally 'offensive' remarks or acts. Yes these thoughts are sometimes deeply held beliefs but 9 times out of 10 it is attention seeking, see the BNP or Westboro Baptists for a perfect example of this mix.

What does this negative 'offended' reaction get us? Well in my opinion it enforces that the opinion or belief the person exposing the vile behaviour is worthwhile. It enables them and validates their opinions, as let's face it the types who go in for this are not the brightest.

I'm not saying we should just ignore this sort of behaviour, there are plenty of laws floating about (some right some wrong) that are there to punish people who are willing to overstep the mark, however we can also stop this moral outrage and tit for tat attacks that occur when something happens. A racist is a racist a bigot is a bigot a person willing to insult, berate or demean another person no matter the other reason should not be hated they should be pitied. We should not enable their behaviour by acknowledging it via fear, offence or retaliation using the same methods they do. We should remove their power and essentially grow a thicker skin and laugh at their petty ways. The sooner these people realise that their hate fuelled opinions and beliefs no longer hold an impact on others the sooner they will re-evaluate those beliefs. Where there is wrongdoing highlight it is not acceptable via appropriate authorities (where they can be trusted, but this is a separate point completely)don't enable the person or people by going off on moral crusades stating its causing you offence as it's what they want.

We are no longer living in days where widespread racism/bigotry is accepted by what would be deemed as reasonable people, yes it still happens and it will take quite a few generations yet to breed out these persons, but please don't feed them by showing your offence (a stupid idea for an emotion if ever I saw one) it plays into their hands as it allows them to say essentially "look I've hit a nerve, I must be right otherwise they wouldn't notice"

The more we tell people that what they are doing is wrong and reprehensible and that we are offended by what they are doing the more likely they are going to continue acting in the same way or come up with different ways of doing the exact same thing but under a slightly different guise. When you know someone is in the wrong you will generally tell them however there are those who go in for this type of behaviour that simply do not have the capacity to learn via reasonable people pointing out the error in their ways.

People are always going to hate, but why meet this hate with further hate? We are a supposed advanced civilisation so where has meeting hate with hate ever got us in our lives or history as a race? We shouldn't just be looking to vilify or punish people who hold dangerous, incorrect, outdated or ignorant views. We shouldn't be getting angry with them and as I've said it enables their beliefs. They need shown in no uncertain terms that society is not set up to allow hateful behaviour and that their opinions hold no sway in the world at large, that they are an isolated group of nobodies that society doesn't want unless they are able to see that essentially we are all on the same boat. Being offended by these things is not a progressive way to feel when confronted with it. It leads to so many areas of doubt and uncertainty and we end up with ridiculous bills like the Offensive Behaviour at Football as decisions to tackle the behaviour are made on emotion and impulse rather than logic and reason.

I'm not saying we just sit back and allow a free for all on what is said or done, but maybe if people in the wider context of things controlled themselves from feeling the pain these acts are designed to cause, a better approach can possibly be found to eradicate this sort of despicable behaviour.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - Ah the Sage of Donegal, you shouldn't waste your time talking to him mate, you're better than that. He sees himself as the pied piper of the perma-offended uber fans, he's the equivalent of McMurder and just about as sensible, they are both nothing but self serving egomaniacs. Usually I just delete any posts that mentions him.
I've known him for over 20 years and he was far from impressed when he found out that the Guinness sponsorship story was an April Fool's joke I had started, according to him when he 'broke' the story it had came from his well connected and impeccable sources from Dublin!
He's the only person I know who happily and blatantly asks CFC supporters for money to help keep his blog going, it's a blog ffs, there are months when the guys that own these sites are out of pocket paying the charges for servers etc and we have hundreds of thousands more hits, the adverts we carry don't pay much because people just don't click on them so anything that comes in just goes towards the running costs. If it was that important to him the money shouldn't matter, hasn't he sold enough books to subsidise running a blog? Have a read through this:

http://goo.gl/XPIQ9h

It's not often I've agreed with Ed recently but I'm right behind him on this one Evinguu

The guy is a total roaster and so far up his own backside it's embarrassing. Thankfully I've only known of him for the past 2 yrs thanks to social media but he's someone I could gladly of went through life without ever knowing about.

He wrote a book about Rangers and tried to flog it to the Sun newspaper. Last week Celtic, quite rightly, had a piece on their website about the charity single released for Anne Williams who lost her Son at Hillsborough and campaigned for justice. I don't know about Ph*l but his sidekick took it upon herself to retweet the Celtic piece.

If you had any compassion at all about Hillsborough, you would not associate yourself with the Sun newspaper. EVER!

All this proved is these folk are false and in no way offended about anything!

The sooner some fans stop lapping up everything they say, the friggin better.

We might not all agree about the Club etc but this person is on a different level.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I thought you might have had something to say about him lol. Even without the Hillsborough thing, he has made his name by preaching how incompetent the MSM is, then he gets a book serialisation with the lowest scum form of the MSM - The S*n!
I wonder what he thinks about them hacking NL's phone?}

The best thing to do with Phil Mac is ignore him, and eventually he'll go away. While people give him the attention his ego will continue to grow and he'll think people care about his obscene opinions. The man's a hypocrite!

Agree0 Disagree0

Can't stand him or his sidekick Ed! Remember the 'scu*mbag' incident as well?

They treat Celtic fans as if they are daft and it really bugs me lol

I do ignore them HB but when I seen that about Hillsborough last week my temper resurfaced.

They talk absolute sh*t.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - There's that many things they've came out with that have backfired they are like a parody now, it can be funny sometimes.}

Oh I agree with most points above about about mr phil his fob off response to me of "that 'reasoning' is risible, i'm busy goodbye" basically summed up my entire point of how taking offence defeats the purpose of what you want to change! He didn't and doesn't get it, offended for offendeds sake, blind to see that this Is aslo part of the fuel to the fire in the bigotry/racism debate.

Agree0 Disagree0

It's the words he uses the the way he'll word sentences that I can find funny.

I had a wee look at his twitter there 'risible', I have higher English and never used that word in my life. He's 'risible' :-)

You're right, way too much has backfired and he is a bit of a laughing stock.

He's also a bigot, everything he claims to hate! Most of us can be 90 minute bigots (not excusing it) but he's a full time one.

Agree0 Disagree0

Mrs E, I must've missed this. What did he/they say about Hillsborough?! I'm not even sure I want to know, my stomach's turning at the thought of what it is!

Agree0 Disagree0

HB, never actually said anything. It was just trying to flog the book he wrote to the Sun, a newspaper I don't even know if you can buy in Liverpool!

Then has the hypocrisy to congratulate Celtic and make a point of tweeting about the charity song.

Football fans are very often discriminated against and made out to be a shower of drunken louts - for whatever reason. Him and his sidekick have jumped on that bandwagon more than once just has the Sun did after Hillsborough with their lies.

Let me know if I'm being a bit extreme with this but I don't think so!

Aftrnoon Ed007

The need for Rangers to be back so we become stronger therefore giving us competiton to prepare us for the CL campaign, I don't get it, when they were at their pomp I do'nt remember us doing well every year, you might be able to provide the stats from their 9 in a row years till now

PS I don't regard, Efe, stokesy, forest or kayal as deadwood, ah bit harsh methinks :))

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Efe's a bombscare + the chink in the armour clubs look to single out (along with Izzy) to focus their attacks through, Stokes is an average greedy primadonna, Forrest has no end product + injury prone, Kayal has never fully recovered from the injury he received from that thug Lee McCulloch.

Agree0 Disagree0

And I can provide you with the facts on Deadco's first three seasons on the road to 9IAR if you like:

R*ngers 1988-89: Scottish Premier Division winners, Scottish Cup runners up, League Cup winners, UEFA Cup 2nd round.

R*ngers 1989-90: Scottish Premier Division winners, Scottish Cup 4th round, League Cup winners, European Cup first round.

R*ngers 1990-91: Scottish Premier Division winners, Scottish Cup quarter finals, League Cup winners, European Cup second round.

6/9 domestic trophies, a SC final + 10 European matches.

Celtic 2011-12: Scottish Premier League winners, Scottish Cup semi finals, League Cup runners up, Europa League group stage.

Celtic 2012-13: Scottish Premier League winners, Scottish Cup winners, League Cup semi finals, Champions League last 16.

Celtic 2013-14: Scottish Premier League winners - elect, Scottish Cup 4th round, League Cup 3rd round.

4/9 domestic trophies, no other finals, although we played 32 European matches.

Deadco's campaigns was pre-group stage European football with less teams qualifiying and no safety net of UEFA Cup from the European Cup, etc. We also had a reprive (Sion getting kicked out) which gained us an extra 6 games - so let's just stick to comparing domestic competitions?

Agree0 Disagree0

Apologies, that should say a LC final rather than no other finals.

Hamiltonbhoy, I was'nt looking for an argument or comparisons with Rangers, I was trying to debunk the myth that ( we need Them)! to do well in th CL, GS and NL have done well in my eyes, Celtic only need to buy quality added to the quality we already have and wee wo'nt be far away,
If we do'nt sell said quality, I maybe did'nt word it the way it was in my head, and NL has to show he has learned managerial lessons, jeez your Hamilton boyz are quite feisty lol:))

Agree0 Disagree0

Apologies mate, I've took your post the wrong way then. However, after investigating the facts it's made me realise just how dissapointing Lennon's been.

They achieved 3 doubles (6/9 domestic trophies) in a 3 horse race between us, them + Aberdeen. Lennon's achieved one double (4/9) in a one horse race. Really poor!

Haha, we're very passionate about Celtic in this wee bigoted toon. Especially the ones, ie me, who stay in predominantly R*ngers / Prod / Loyalist areas where they still have a Masonic Lodge, flute bands practising in the community centre every Monday of the year with the doors open for all to hear + a young team called Jungle Derry!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - You should get yourself up to Fairhill, it's a better class of place altogether.}

We don't need Rangers as such, just a serious challenger and competition in the league.

If its going to come from the Ibrox Club then we have quite a few years to wait - assuming they survive.

I'm a bit wary of 'we should be beating all other Clubs in the league by a good margin every week now that Rangers are gone'? We never did that when they were here so why would it change now? 3-2 against ICT (2011/12) or 2-1(2004/05) against Motherwell and blew the title?

Celtic seem to shoot themselves in the foot all the time and I don't know why, it's very frustrating! This season's Cup exits are an utter embarrassment and I now feel only the treble next season will make up for it.

Agree0 Disagree0

Guys don't understand the efe bashing. Yes he can make a mistake just like any other defender, Kompany last wk)and I regard him the best. But remember this he is part of the best defence we have had in years.We have suffered from some terrible defenders in recent past. He makes a good partnership with VVD and I always say the partnership is what counts.Remember McLeish wasn't a great defender but with Miller made a great partnership.

@5&6 Mrs E & Hamiltonbhoy

We lost titles to them recently due to our failings against teams late on in the season

Motherwell and ICT our downfall not Rangers superiority

Also NL the honeymoon is over no more repeating the same mistakes please, Aberdeen could win more trophies

Jayzus Rangers could win more trophies its just not good enough i'm afraid, .

HB burnbank/whitehill then lol

{Ed007's Note - Can you remember and log in bud.}

Ths, I'm thinking the Udston part of Burnbank - fondly known as the Jungle lol

Exactly we lost the title with defeats against teams like Mothwerwell and ICT, not just Rangers.

Rayman, I agree with your point. We still need depth in our squad and we can't pack it full of high earners. Efe does a job.

Ed, I wrote quite a lengthy post this morning. Did it come through alright? I know I've had issues in the past with writing longwinded efforts then they don't reach you! If not it was the following:

--------------------------------------------------

Back to normal Celtic business. Probably going to get shot down for this as I've not moved on or gave up, but here goes.

If we're to qualify AND compete in the Champions League group stage next season, either for the Last 16 or the Europa League spot, first and foremost we need to retain Forster + Virgil. I also believe we need a manager who isn't tactically inept, capable of coming up with a plan B and willing to mix it up when players are out of form/fitness.

The dead wood I'd cut from the team would be: Ambrose, Samaras (leaving on a Bosman already), Stokes, Boerrigter, Mouyokolo, Griffiths*, Kayal + Forrest. I'd also like to see us bring in Alex Buttner [LB/LW] (£3.5m), Marco Capuano [CB/LB) [£1.6m], Aron Johannsson (LW/AM/CF) [£4m], Jonatan Soriano (AM/CF) [£5m] and I'd still like us to go after Alfred Finnbogason [£9m] (LW/CF).

Before anyone says we can't afford those fees. It's £23.1m on 5 players, we could possibly get them for less than that - especially if Lawwell is as good a businessman + negotiator as people make him out to be. This season we've spent £14m on 10 players - 1x GK (loan), 2x DF, 3x MF + 4x FW. Rather than spending it on players that aren't all going to make the squad/starting XI, let's bring in impact players. Dermot Desmond was telling the press the other week how he's proud as punch to be at Celtic and how big a club it is - going as far as saying we're the best performing club on and off the park in the UK. If that's the case then let's see him invest a few million of his own personal fortune, he's a billionaire so it'd be a drop in the ocean for him!

If we got those players in + out, our squad would be: Forster, Zaluska; Izzy, Virgil, Mulgrew, Lustig (vc), Fisher, Fraser, Chalmers, Toshney, CAPUANO, BUTTNER; Matthews, Biton, Broony (c), Commons, Rogic, Johansen, Herron, Irvine, McGeouch, George, Henderson, F Twardzik, JOHANNSSON; Balde, Fridjonsson, Pukki, Watt, (Griffiths), Atajic, SORIANO, FINNBOGASON.

Bare in mind that Fisher, Fraser, Chalmers, Toshney; Herron, Irvine, McGeouch, George, Henderson, F Twardzik; Watt + Atajic are all youth players from our own academy. So it's not a massive squad. About 20 first team with a backfill of youth players.

My starting XI would be: Forster; Lustig, Virgil, CAPUANO, BUTTNER; Broony (c); Matthews, Commons, JOHANNSSON; SORIANO, FINNBOGASON.

Subs: Zaluska; Mulgrew, Izzy; Biton, Rogic, Johansen; Watt/Griffiths.

* Personally I don't want him at Celtic, but I doubt we have much choice and most seem to be happy to accept him at the club.

Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - I'm just online HB so I don't know if it came through or not.}

We have long missed the boat for finnbogasson. He is not coming. He is not interested and his agent has publicly stated that AS Roma is his most likely destination this summer

Agree0 Disagree0

Well take away Finnbogason and go after even a UK based player such as Danny Ings (AML/CF) [£3m], Jordan Rhodes (CF) [£8m] or Charlie Austin (AMRL/CF) [£4.5m] alongside Jonathan Soriano. Philipp Hosiner (AMR/CF) [£3m] still hasn't left Austria Wien! A last resort cheap option, which is right up the board's street, is Ivan Santini (CF) [£1.5m] from Kortrijk in Belgium. Scored 13 goals in 29 this season for a middle of the table team!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - As you know HB I watch a lot of Bundesliga football and I heard someone on TV mention that Aaron Hunt from Werder Bremen is out of contract this summer. I done a bit of digging and found out that Bremen want him to take a drastic wage cut which he is not happy about. Wages in the £25k-£30k bracket and a decent signing on fee seems to be the kind of money being bandied about and Southampton and Newcastle are sniffing around.
His mother is English (and I'm led to believe she stays there) so he would be more open to a move to the UK than most German players would, they tend to stay in Germany. I know it's only Youtube but here's a short video I found:

21 Mar 2014 16:17:54
Your in dream land HB there is no way in the world we will spend that kind of dosh finbogasson is a non starter johanson miby but would doubt it! Do think we will spend big on a CF to partner girthis miby shell out five million tops on the right player also will be expecting a winger in and would like to see a number 10 playmaker! Chances are we are gony lose VVD and FF so then they will need to be replaced think we should be lookin for upwards of 12.5m for vvd and miby 9-10m for FF!

Kieran

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Can you make sure you log in Kieran, cheers.}

Jordan rhodes would be ideal if we could get him. can't see him at blackburn rovers for too long

Agree0 Disagree0

Aaron Hunt's a cracking shout mate, would easily become a fans favourite and a £5m plus asset to the club in the future.

Kieran, I've given plausible reason how this could be possible. And by buying bigger means receiving bigger when selling on. If we can convince Southampton that Wanyama, a £900k signing, is worth £12.5m after only two seasons; we convinced Norwich that Hooper was worth double what we paid for him in 3 years; and Swansea that Ki was worth treble his signing value within 2 and a half years. Imagine what we could do with a £5m plus signing?!

This is how Dortmund, Ajax, Porto, etc have increased revenue as well as the quality on the pitch.

What I see as plausible, and what I expect from the PLC, are two entirely different things though buddy. I expect us to see the back of Forster + Virgil in the summer with two mince replacements such as "Aberdeen cup winning superstars" Jamie Langfield + Russell Anderson!

Nothing will ever change while Celtic: a) remain in Scotland; and b) under the current regime.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Mar 2014 10:15:11
Thanks Ed for the advice on visiting the Emptihad as you put it.

I liked your recent post on changes that are really needed at Celtic. Good attacking football is what puts bums on seats not 1 nil wins against pitiful opposition.

Neil Lennon won't bring attacking football, he seems to worry about the opposition more than focusing on his own team. I have a greater tactical awareness and I will admit that I am far from great in all things football.

Having read you like Man Utd, I am sorry to say this but Olympiakos looked a better overall squad, clearly individually they are nowhere near the Utd players but they showed that by having a go and with the right players, not all superstars then even the biggest teams find it tough. I am sure someone even posted a while back that the Olympiakos team was built on a budget even though they sold there main striker to Fulham.

We need to stop signing players that are way down on our list of targets and ensure we get the Number 1 or Number 2, scrap this wage restriction and the reality is its no ones business what a player earns. So if a new signing earns £10k more than our top earner then so be it.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - Hi Kev, sorry it took so long to answer you, I was busy all morning and that's me just getting online. I think the difference between Utd and Olympiakos is having players like Rooney or RVP who can turn a tie on it's head themselves, all the bigger teams in Europe have at least 2/3 players like that but you're spot on about what can be done by so called smaller clubs with the right players and the right tactics. I searched back and seen a post with these figures regarding the Greeks finances and players. It sure backs up what we are talking about:

Market spend 2012/2013: €4.000.000
Market spend 2011/2012: €6.000.000

2012/2013 salary: €18.000.000
2011/2012 salary: €23.000.000
Difference: -21.7%

Highest paid player 2012/2013: Paulo Machado (€1.500.000)
Highest paid player 2011/2012: Olof Mellberg (€1.500.000)

Count up the costs of Bangura, Pukki, Balde, Boerrigter and Griffiths and we have wasted more on those players than the Greeks spent over 2 years on players plus they reduced their wage-bill by nearly a quarter at the same time.
I have been saying for a long time that I would rather see our wage structure restructured than raising the budget for fees, we could attract a better quality of player, including Bosman signings, if we raised our ceiling to circa £30k, the average wage in the EPL. I don't mean across the board paying £30k but for a couple of players it shouldn't be a problem, better players will bring more success, a better style of football and with both of those our income will rise.
As an example, we could sell van Dijk for say £8m, and use £4/5m to replace him, pay his replacement £28/30k a week and still bank a couple of million out of the deal.
We can offer players CL football, if we don't qualify for the groups then that is the board, the manager and even the player's fault. It's up to those 3 to ensure that we qualify, the old boring and tired excuses that 'we can't afford to compete' and 'it's the league we play in' were invented to cover up Rangers failings in Europe and we seem to have adopted to try and cover up our own club's failings.
What is the point of a football club needing £21m in the bank, that's after everything has been paid so it's not for wages etc.
I can see us really struggling to reach the CL group stages next season and if we don't the blame firmly lies at Peter Lawwell's and NL's door, there are no acceptable excuses. I can accept us getting beaten by teams who spend mega-millions on players but I refuse to accept struggling against Karagandy, getting beat by Morton and being outwitted by Aberdeen, which just shows again what a well organised team can do.}

Ed I agree bud we should be able to pay our top three or four players 30k, but only if we qualify for the CL, say they had 20k contracts with 10k CL qualification bonus, then these players would only have them self to blame if we don't qualify.
