Now I might be the only one here but I'd love to see commons get a chance up front. He's got good feet and we know he can score a goal.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hi Peter, guess that's your solution to replacing hooper? Same as kayal can replace Wanyama?

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm guessing there's someone already registered under nearly the same name as me. I'd better change mine then. I definitely don't think he's a replacement for Hooper but I'd say he was one of the best finishers we have and while we await a new signing why not give it a try?

Chris

Agree0 Disagree0

You are right. I am not a replacement for Hooper but I'll give it a go as long as you promise not to shout at me when l don't score 20 goals a season lol

Please SFA agree to Craig Mather's request for clarity regarding penalties for entering admin. This will surely force the SFA to clear up the same club nonsense.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

What about the five point plan then? How about we hear about that too!

Agree0 Disagree0

Green whole heartedly accepted the ban, a deal was done. What did he get?

Agree0 Disagree0

Sevco gave assurances Whyte was not involved in buying the assets. Whyte has taped conversations, bank transfers, and a 330 page dossier claiming he was. Sevco5088 bought the assets and whyte owned it. SFA needs to come clean on this debacle. Whyte will stop greens sale of shares to Easdales as whyte claims he owns those shares.

reading the posts on stokes and you would think he was the worst striker we have ever had, I know he isn't among the best but I think he is a scapegoat for not signing another striker, I checked the stats of our main attackers in the period he's been here and they read . HOOPER 138 games 82 goals 20 assists, 1.68 per game ratio scored , STOKES 108 games 47 goals 24 assists 2.29 per game ratio scored, SAMARAS 115 games 29 goals 20 assists 3.9 per game ratio scored, COMMONS 102 games 35 goals 27 assists 2.29 per game ratio scored . the problem I think we have with stokes and with hooper also(when he was here) is they play well in a partnership but can't lead an attack on their own, same with samaras he couldn't do it in spl but has had more success in some european games of late . do I want another better stiker, yes, would I like to see stokes stay yes, as we know he can cope in the spl, deep river bhoy

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I would keep Stokes.

I think even with Hooper, Neil Lennon was still always looking for another CF but now we are seriously short of options. Miku and Lasaad were an option (not the best options) but they are also gone.

Could not help but notice the striking (pun intended) between Bangura last night and Bony tonight.
What about this for a suggestion we swap them both when no one is looking, then recall ahem "Bangura" from Elfsborg, we then get an £8m player for free. lol Timalloy

Not sure how to word it properly, so here goes,,
IF these guys or any other players for that matter pick Stoke or other bottom feeders or championship for that matter? It's because it's a far better league and as a bonus money aswell, there will be the odd few that will be enticed by how big we are and always have been and others that don't care one bit.
Without sounding deep, our history might not sound so great to what's happening right now for some players?

Can I just say a big well done to St Johnstone who have won 0-1 in Minsk. By my reckoning that is a minimum of 5 coefficient points they have earned for themselves and the Scottish coefficient also.
If you remember last year the 3 other teams only amassed 1.5 coefficient points, so this result boosts St Johnstone, Scotland AND Celtic.
Let us hope Motherwell can add to this coefficient total later tonight. Timalloy

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Timalloy please look at how UEFA coefficient points are distributed, Hibs are the only team to have collected any points this season (0.5) after being eliminated in Q2, no points awarded for wins or draws in qualifying!

Just wanted to correct my arithmetic earlier.
In Europa League teams only get 1 point for a win and 1/2 for a draw so St Johnstone only get 2.5 coefficient points (so far) NOT 5 as I said.
I also looked at Celtic's coefficient points over last 5 years. Only last season were we in double figures and in 2009/2010 we only amassed 5 points and in 2010/2011 a paltry 2 coefficient points. So we need at least 2 more seasons of earning coefficient points over 14 to get our rating high again.Timalloy

First time poster, love the site and reading the opinions of fellow 'Tic supporters. Thoughts please as this has been nagging me since leaving the stadium last night. In my opinion, it was evident that we need a new capable striker. Many names have been mentioned since Hooper left. Most would cost a few million. With a slender 1-0 advantage, will PL sanction movement or will he sit tight until after next Wednesday? My fear, dare I say it, should we go out next week, what we have is what we will go with unless more go out the door. I'm all for being prudent but I think, given the recent cash injection, we deserve a name to excite us. Am I being too needy and cavalier? Ed and all, thanks for reading this, I welcome feedback. {Ed007's Note - Welcome to the site. We need to go with what we have next week, the deadline for signing a player for this round has passed.}

Just read a post earlier about certain players only good
Enough for spl, not for champs league. Am I missing something. Our priority as a club should be

Spl
Sfa cup
League cup
Europe cl or Europa

Some fans need to realise spending money to compete in Europe will kill the club. Look at sevco.
Like I said earlier the domestic should be priority and the European adventures should be treated as a bonus not a goal.

Finally to all those fans against stokes, kayal replacing big vic.
This is the best time to give these players a chance. With no sevco we should win the league. If they don't work we buy next year. We have a good enough team to compete.
So let's get behind them.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Totally agree would love to see us in last 16 every year but I'd rather we stayed flush as the zombies will rise with their new club and I'd rather have the money to bury them forever
Cha67

Agree0 Disagree0

Disagree with you to an extent, the champions league is a necessity with the money it brings in. £22m last year! No one is asking for that to be spent on players, but some of it should be spent to enhance the team and get us there again. We have a great policy as regards to signings but I hope we push the boat out on top striker.

Btw Great site ed keep up the good work its a good we set up yous have got lol think am starting to get addicted to it haha

Another goal would have been ideal but a wins a win and a clean sheet is always good in Europe.
Not sure and don't care how much Boerrigter cost but looks the part and hope he comes good, I've got a good feeling about this guy.
Knowing Celtic and more on the rumour side of things Finnbogasson could be a no go but I hope he is thee one. I wouldn't be disappointed if we miss out on him and sign another goal getter but I won't accept a last minute or the board taking the cheats way out.
It's glaringly obvious we need a class striker, he might only cost £500.000 if they have done their homework? He might cost £5mil but it could be the difference in getting to the groups!?

I'm a bit concerned with the artificial pitch next week. I know we played on one in Ireland, but I feel they are pitches that take time to get used to regarding the bounce etc. I felt v Cliftonville it took us 20 mins or so to adapt. 20 mins to adapt v Elfsburg could be dangerous.
Here's hoping we play like we did v Spartak on their park last season.

Joeshmo1888

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Artificial pitches always worry me mate. I would assume we will train on our own all week but no two are the same. You can also alter them with water which will suit them I would think. Not having an out and out chance taker might be a real problem for us over there. But as I said in an earlier post I think if they open up we can get at them. green jhedi

Agree0 Disagree0

Im not sure but would assume they have an astroturf pitch at Lennoxtown.

Agree0 Disagree0

I actually think our record on artificial pitches is good . I'm sure somebody out there would confirm this . I think we played twice in the CL last year and won the 2 games on them . DH

01 Aug 2013 17:09:20
Yeah mate they do have 1 at lennoxtown played on it last year but as gj said no two ate the same we always seem to get the teams with plastic pitch aka helsinki moscow cliftonville and now this mob imo I would go next week with forster matthews lustig and mulgrew centre izzy boerigter ledley kayal brown on the right with commons playing just behind sammy then depending how it goes youve ambrose if we need to shut shop a bit or forest if we need someone to make an impact from the bench I know everyone will have there own thoughts just the way I would line up

Agree0 Disagree0

Most of us would have liked another goal without being greedy, as it will be tough over there with them having a great home record, the 4G just adds to my nerves, celtic have it Lennoxtown and will use it most days leading up to the game and probably have access to 4G over there to train on leading up to the game?.

How can some Celtic fans on here say that Bangura getting boo'd is a disgrace? Yes Celtic put him out on loan but at the end of the day he was a rival player last night and deserved the reaction he got from our fans. Plus I thought he was a fairy at one point with the amount of diving about he did. The boy is useless and whoever was involved in getting a £1 million loan fee for him should be giving a medal. DundeeMichael.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree.I posted yesterday that he should be respected as a Celtic player, but during the game he was against us so giving him stick was a legitimate tactic to put him off his game. As for his TWO dives, that was just plain cheating, although Wilson was stupid to even swing his arm to be honest. green jhedi

I honestly cannot believe yet again the Forrest negativity and for no reason, do some not notice him as he's only 5ft 9!

His team mates have to make the best of him and that includes not making a high pass over meant for a giant, which I though both Kayal and Brown were guilty of.

First half Andreas Klarstrom was yellow carded for a blatant bodycheck on Forrest as he could not handle his pace. The came the shocking cross into the box from Forrest after he beat their offside trap (very easily) to Kayal. That required one of their players to make a fantastic interception. Can I assume I was the only one and everyone around about me seen this? Maybe it's the different ends of the park we all sit at and see things differently.

He was unfortunate with the ball he hit off the crossbar when the ball bounced or it would definitely been in the back of the net.

He never gave up running at their defence and his crossing is not poor, there is just nobody there to connect! Again the need for a decent Centre Forward. Last night may not have been his best game ever but no way was it that bad either and there was worse than on the park than him.

Seems to be unless Forrest has a fantastic game, then he's rubbish and should not be played again. Same way I won't forget he got the blame on here for Dundee Utd scoring 3 goals in the Semi final of the Scottish Cup, not the defenders fault according to some but the wingers. Some logic there!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course ~ Mrs E

Believable0 Unbelievable0

@ Mrs E: Much as I respect your posts you cannot be serious defending him after last night. You cited two pieces of play from him, how long does a game last Mrs E? I will give you that the service he received was pretty poor at times but to me he showed no appetite to drop short and get involved. He could of course be following orders but where's his game intelligence?

I don't like giving stick to Celtic players, especially younger ones, but for me he is not justifying a place in the team. The most frustrating thing for me is the fact he has so much to offer but is not showing it. Maybe Lenny has to work tactics to allow him more one on ones to use his pace. I honestly would love to see him bursting past players, he did when he first came into the team, but he needs to move his game forward for me. As you say Mrs E, only my opinion. green jhedi

Agree0 Disagree0

@mrs E. with hindsight I would accept that Forrest probably doesn't, deserve much stick for last night. I lost count of the number of high floated balls were played to him in the first half . Two from Scott brown went straight into the main stand. By the time the rest reached him he was tight on the touch line with at least one defender in his face. And he still had to bring the ball down, on many of those occasions he did well to retain possession at all. When he got the ball on the deck in front of him he got the better of the full back more often than not, the service to him was much better 2nd half although his final ball could often be better. As you say though the lack of a centre forward and not enough midfield support in the box at times didn't help. andybhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

I reckon Forrest and Stokes; to name 2 are capable of SPL standard only -and even when there OF games they were out of their depth in them too.
As far as CL opponents they are not up to the job - and this is not after one or two games, but over the past 3 seasons.
Too often wee James flatters to deceive and has went backwards since 2011.

Jungle Jim

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with Mrs e, maybe he was rubbish last night but you lot seem to be forgetting this is only our 3rd competitive game. He is young but will come good. Get off the bhoys back. If he still sucks midway through the season then aye fair enough, but get a grip bhoys.

Darrenbhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

By the way green Jedi, above this post you claim bangura should be respected as a Celtic player then you write that guff about a bhoy that actually wants to he part of the Celtic family and isn't just hanging around waiting for an epl call. Just somthing to think about mate.

Darrenbhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

Okay this is my assessment of James Forrest -

James Forrest has been at Celtic since he was 11 and is capped at every level for his National Team (Scotland), he seems to be contracted until 2016.

Up until December 2011 the player I seen more than made up for lack of physical presence with a commitment to his play and never shirked away from imposing defenders, taking them on and winning with his pace.

He showed intelligence by knowing when to hug the touchline and when to cut in.

Since late 2011 Forrest seemed to take a confidence knock and has missed parts of the season with hamstring injuries. His weakness lies in tracking back, if you look at the best in the world - Messi and Ronaldo, if they lose the ball they will chase back and win the ball back on defence.

He normally plays wide out on the right and this is arguably his best position. Neil Lennon can change him to the left wing.

He recently turned 22 and can have no excuses this season however, I do not think he's the finished article. I'm hoping he can stay injury free.

If Celtic sold him right now, I would expect a fee of 3m upwards ~ Mrs E

Agree0 Disagree0

@Darrenbhoy: What guff did I post about Forrest? Do you think he done anything of note last night? Do you think he has justified inclusion in all his starts last season? Do you think he has moved his game forward since He broke through? His biggest asset is his pace and he is not showing it. There is talent there but is their application?

On Banguerra, I was pointing out that pre game there should have been no stick but during the game he got it tight because he was against us, that's normal. green jhedi

Agree0 Disagree0

GJ, give the boy a break. he's a Celtic regular, won young player of the year, played champions league football and become a Scotland squad regular all before the age of 22! there's so much to be positive about the boy, let's enjoy his progression under a very astute management team. As you can see from the above, its not just my opinion. maestro8

Agree0 Disagree0

@maestro8: there seems to be a perception that I am giving the boy some clog here. I am not.I have said countless times that I rate him and think he has real potential but it is undeniable that he has not really progressed.

last season the boy struggled with injury and deserved the benefit of the doubt.Maybe I expect too much of him but I don't think his game has improved. When he first broke through he terrorised defenders with his pace and shooting, you just don't see him do that any more. This is a big season for him and I really hope he can step up.As I have said before the talent is there we have seen it. green jhedi

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm hoping he does well this season too GJ.

I really think this is his season to prove himself, he's 22 now and has enough experience (Celtic first team, CL and International).

A winger is not everyone's cuppa tea, look at Samaras. How long as it taken the Celtic support to give him a break ~ Mrs E

I think it was a solid win, another goal would have killed the tie so maybe still a wee bit to do but we've got to be confident for next week.

Looking around the other ties, no real stand out results, for me basel, steau and plzen would be the teams to avoid in the play off.

One other quick point, PSV & Lyon both among the teams playing in qualifiers this week and of the 15 ties CP had the highest attendance in Europe. Good stuff guys.

I live in Arbroath and I usually watch the games in The Portcullis on Montrose road or The Millgate bar on Millgate Loan. Neither could be described as out and out Celtic bars but there are always plenty of bhoys in for the games, especially in The Portcullis which is an excellent pub and has won many awards. The phrase a game of two halves must have been coined for the matches like this. I thought for the first half we were sluggish and very loose with our passing and pressing. To be fair they are seventeen games into their season, so that probably accentuated our lack of sharpness, but nonetheless we were second best.On three occasions we could easily have lost a goal thanks to slack play by Wilson, Ambrose and Izzy.

Thankfully the break seemed to galvanise us.It seemed as if the first forty five minutes had got us up to speed and we started quickly. Our passing was better and Commons started to find pockets of space to play in, no mean feat considering they packed their defence.Elfsborg were fit and strong and defended well, although some ref's might have been a bit less lenient towards them, but all in all we controlled the whole second half and deserved the win.

On the players, first half I don't think anyone would have scored over five out of ten.In the second, when we stepped it up, Broony, Commons and Sammi were our best.Izzy was better going forward, he had virtually no defending to do so that was the least we expected, but still causes concern by getting caught out of position. I thought Kayal started well but faded, and we needed
Ledley when he came on as we seemed to become more dominant. Stokes and Forrest? I don't even want to start with their performances, we all seen it. A special word for Sammi though. Constantly fouled and outnumbered he stood up and was counted last night.Always willing to take the ball and run them he will be stiff today.

Next leg? They never showed anything to unduly worry me. They will have to open up and that should let us in.I do however feel that the result will be be in our own hands. If we are up to speed and full strength we should be fine.We cannot however carry any passengers and sadly last night we did. A natural finisher would help as well as we might have limited chances over there. green jhedi

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Have to agree with all of that gj. It was also glaringly obvious to me and probably everyone there that we will need a serious frontman if last year is to be repeated. As for Forrest his performance showed exactly why we have just bought a very pacy winger who can penetrate defences I hope. All in all though satisfactory for a rusty bunch of players. Would have liked to see rogic given a chance. We needed someone to pick a pass through them. Perhaps not the night to be trying things and Nl played safe I think. andybhoy

@Green Jhedi, well summed up mate. Elfsborg were what we expected a big physical side. As for Bangura, apart from his playacting I thought he put in a shift, more than he ever did for us.
Ambrose is not a centre half and Wilson was also poor. Hope at least one of Mulgrew, Mathews and Van Dijk are available for second leg.
Kayal is not the answer in midfield, as you say GJ, when Ledley came on we were much better.
As for Forrest his crossing again was shocking, do the coaches at CP ever do any work with him in training?
I hope the Dutch guy Boerigter(spelling?) can play some part in second leg, by all accounts he is big and fast and puts in good crosses (james watch and learn son)
If fit put Mulgrew at cb, move Ambrose into midfield alongside Brown and Ledley. This would mean dropping Kayal and I would even drop Forrest over there. Timalloy

Agree0 Disagree0

Totally agree mate, normally I would try to defend wee forest but not this time . Last night made it painfully obvious that stokes can't fill the hole left by Hooper. I still think we have enough to win this tie but a poacher is a must for the next round. I think bangura pretty much killed any chance of touching our hollowed ground again. Diving against the people that pay your wages isn't a good idea. I hope lenny ends his loan and makes him rot in our reserves.

The Sevconians travelled in force tonight with 'trialists' to second tier Dundee to stamp their authority on Scottish football. Deady bear fans were expectant of Scotland's second best squad but it was not to be. Dundee led deservedly 1-0 at half time and deserved the game but it finished 1-1.

What was going to be a trumpeted walkover in the media is now a news blackout, move along forget it job.

Freebie players and a duff manager don't make cup winning teams. Sevco are second tier average at best on tonight's result.
