Before anybody tells me (Ed) I know that our two pumpings have been dished out by teams with the potential to win the Champions League (at least one of them) to which we can add our biggest humiliation in my memory from Barcelona. Aye Brendan can send out a team to attack as is the case every week in the SPL. But here's my question-can he set up a team to defend away from home and avoid a pumping or is that his weak spot? Would Lennon, Strachan or O''Neil have lost the three games I've mentioned by the same margin? I think not. ☘️.

Jfp we got pumped 6-1 off Barcelona when Lennon was there. and do u remember in Bratislava with Strachan! I do agree that Brendan has to adapt our game to playing these higher level teams! I'm not saying just 10 men behind the ball but the space we give these teams is unbelievable and it will continue to happen if the manager won't alter his tactics in the CL!

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Oct 2017 22:55:54
the only way we can beat compete with these teams is 11 men behind the ball and we would need to replace half of last nights team with 5/ 6 who can defend better - and IF its tight with 10 minutes to go then throw on 3 strikers!

all of the above not the Celtic way - so sadly we need to line up our regular best team and get beat 3/ 5-0 as the other teams are simply better than our best team.

No my maths is better than my memory, do you not remember who the manager was either?

19 Oct 2017 23:35:17
Digi nailed it for me. It's not the celtics ethos to defend. Brendan doesn't expect to win but he expects to compete and unfortunate they aren't at the same level to compete hence the pumping. Playing the standard domestic attack formation ( albeit with different individual instructions) for me isn't a good idea against a potential winner of the comp. playing 2 wingers who are very attack minded coupled with another disjointed back 4 is not the correct decision. We could play that match another 50 times with same team out against same team and not win once.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Oct 2017 00:17:47
I agree with Digibanger too people want us to go out and play the Celtic Way - Unless we lose then we should have parked the bus. To further develop the way we play we have to try and do it against the best. Test our way against thiers and see where it comes up short, then try to improve on it. If as we look likely to do make the Europa League it will be interesting to see how we do, playing quality European opposition but not coming up against the 5 or 6 'Superteams' will be a good indication of where we really are in the grand scheme of things.

Apart from our results against the absolute cream, we have an excellent record in Europe this season.

20 Oct 2017 07:27:48
same old crap on here . we need to defend against these teams,10 men behind the ball, hit on the break, wit a load of bull youse will be the same guys start moaning when we get pumped playing that way . i for one hate celtic losing but i hate celtic losing more when just defend for full game and get horsed id rather get beaten trying to at keast attempt to play.

20 Oct 2017 07:30:33
I want Celtic to go out and play the Celtic way, not being able to find a teammate with a pass, is not the Celtic way.

Agree1 Disagree0

20 Oct 2017 07:26:20
The celtic way each and every time, as usual another manager has been let down by that penny-pinching board. We are a traditional attacking team, why change our dna? 🍀🍀🍀.

Agree8 Disagree2

20 Oct 2017 07:56:34
To me there ate times when we need to go more defensive. My reason for saying this is because against teams like psg Munich Barcelona or Madrid we will be pushed back and not see a lot of the ball anyway.
What we need to do is be better when we do win it back.
Do the basics right.
Pass to your team mate
Support your forward
Don't put the ball directly out of play.
Get your shots on target.

Agree1 Disagree3

20 Oct 2017 07:57:12
Before Brendan in Europe we would always have the worse passing and possession ratios in the competition last year in the group stages brown had the best pass ratio in the cl this year ntcham has completed 90% of his but people are on here saying he's crap and can't pass personally I think I would rather get beat trying than getting beat parking the bus.

Agree1 Disagree0

20 Oct 2017 07:59:38
The Celtic way can work but not with the defence we have. We need better defenders, at least 2.

Agree0 Disagree1

20 Oct 2017 08:01:26
We're first to criticise when teams from the SPL come to us and park the bus. It looks to me when we play bigger European teams that the team is over awed by the opponents. Passing is rushed with mistakes being made, far to much space and time is given and there is no confidence in our ability to be the dangerous, attacking team we can be. It's so disappointing to see such a normally well oiled team collapse because they are playing better opposition. Parking the bus and inviting these teams on even more would be so wrong in my opinion. It's time for the team to start believing in themselves more.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Oct 2017 08:47:03
People really forget the difference in budgets between us and the likes of bayern and Barcelona. They go out and spend 10's of millions on players, some of which spend most of the time on their bench. A prime example is Renato Sanches at Bayern, he's a hell of a player that Bayern paid a large amount for yet couldn't get near the first team. Alcacer at Barcelona is another example. We've got to accept that these teams are a lot stronger than us and we need to spend most of our time defending. If we went out attacking against bayern and left only boyata and Lustig back then I reckon we would be discussing a much larger defeat than 3-0. Their attacking players are simply too good. On another note, I've been saying for the past couple of seasons that Gordon needs to be replaced, I think that would be my priority and give you Ajer a run out.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - have you ever actually watched Renato Sanches play club football? Only I doubt you would be saying one hell of a player if you did! One hell of an overweight, unable to pass to a teammate, ponderous, deer caught in the headlights player maybe....}

20 Oct 2017 09:25:12
Playing defencive and on the counter does not have to be parking the bus. Look at Lennon against Barca. Not one fan here would swap that for trying to play open and attacking football.

Agree0 Disagree3

20 Oct 2017 10:27:54
Ntcham completed 90% of his passes, was that against Bayern?, but it just show you how meaningless statistics like that are, its the importance of and in what part of the field the 10%, he didn't complete, that is more telling, was the 90% safe, short, sideways kind of pass, was the 10% in crucial parts of the field, putting the team under unessecary pressure or ruining good attacking opportunities?

Agree1 Disagree1

20 Oct 2017 11:13:34
I saw us getting beaten 3-0 in Porto and it could have been more and the same result in Lyon under MON and we have lost other games against Rosenborg, Anderlecht, Shakhtar and Benfica by similar scores - - plus defeats to Qarabag, Artmedia, Basel, Aalborg, Malmo, Karagandy and Croatia Zagreb all away from home in the last 16 yrs.
this does not include defeats to europes top teams and recent hamme rings by PSG and Barcelona.
The point is, we have absolutely no pedigree away from home in Europe and our strength has always been home ties and CL nights at Celtic Park to achieve any success.
I feel the disappointment like all of us when we get turned over easily and although these results are often a foregone conclusion for most, I still feel Celtic belong in this competition and if only they could lose the fear, nerves and cut out the schoolboy errors, we can improve.
However, we still really need to invest in better players in key positions and stop going into this tournament with one hand tied behind our back just to save a bob or two - while the cash earned by the players just sits in the tin.

Agree0 Disagree1

20 Oct 2017 11:43:40
Our defence is weak even if we have all current first choices.

To know that and do nothing in the summer sees us playing on Wednesday that couldn't keep weans oot a Close.

Rogers fecked up big time here. No excuses. We now have Simo out further and no one, not one defender who is class to come in. In fact we don't even have competent. That situation going into the CL group stage is shocking management.

They had better be working on it now because another window where we flap about like beggers in a charity shop looking for a Hilton suit needs to be over.

We don't have a fortune but we have made enough these last two years to buy players that don't give you nightmares thinking about them getting a game.

Ed, look at Renato pre bayern Munich for benfica and portugal. Bayern ruined him, he's lost confidence.

Right so to compete in europe we need a ch?
what about the spl our bread and butter. Boyata a stick on for a place, jozo when fit also. so we have erik and ajer. For me ajer is going to be a player so another signing would put him down the pecking order.
Next position being hammered is right back where i see us having the same problem unless lustig and gamboa are punted cos surely ralston is the future.

ralston. Boyata. Ajer/ Jozo. kt

wont win euopean cups but that's what i wanna see week in week out.

If you don't try you'll never know.
Over the next year lusting should be wound down and replaced with Ralston. Potentially the best two full backs Scotland has seen in 30 years.

Heard a good few grumbles about last night and tbh, I don't think we really started playing before Rogic came on. That said, we could have very easily went in at least 4 down at half time (first goal offside coulda been given and lustig coulda walked for the pen claim in first few minutes) an under strength team going away to Munich and shipping 3 goals, Arsenal have a far stronger squad than us and shipped 5 both home and away. Not a nice score line but could have been worse. We have one foot in Europa league already and will hopefully be closer to full strength before the group ends. Things could be a lot worse.

New on here. Just signed up but been reading for a long time. Yes last night we got outplayed but a superior team but what did we really expect. We kept it to 3. Yes possibly Bayern took the foot off the pedal in the second half but we dug in and kept it respectable. I agree with all the posters in regards to criticising the commentators comments about the supposed battering in Bavaria. It never materialised did it. Worst of all was Charlie Nicholas on Sky Sports. Yes Bayern dominated Celtic bus has he forgotten that that Bayern team pumped his beloved Arsenal 10-2 last year in the champs league. The quality of players and money Arsenal have compared to us this should never have happened. After all they play in the best league in the world. What a lot of pish. Charlie, bite my Shi*e and GTF. Your opinion is nonsense if all you are going to be is negative, ask sky to stop associating you with Celtic and do us all a favour and do one.

I never quite know what point a lot of these pundits are trying to make.
Teams who have far greater spending power than us have been hammered by Bayern Munich, why then is it such a terrible thing when we lose there? .
Unless something changes regarding the finances in football our goal will have to be to qualify for the group stages, if we could somehow get a decent draw one of these years then maybe we might have a chance of going further.
Even in the Premier league, despite having all these riches Stoke conceded 7 against Man City, and Watford lost 6 goals against them at home. If clubs who have all this cash can't compete with these elite teams then how on earth are we meant to.

See these "Celtic Fans" that call superscoreboard need to take a look at themselves and stop these traitorous comments about how Brendan set the team up last night.
Context gents, this was one of the best teams in Europe.
So we should have set up to defend, with a makeshift defence?
Against Bayern Munich!
Our weakness is defence, doesn't affect our position in group, cause Anderlech never beating PSG, so try and go forward and play to our strengths if we loose we loose as expected but the only way we have any chance of beating these teams is to play to what we do well.
That's was we do in a home tie and it does sometime work.
Also can somebody please smack that aresehole Daziel.

Reality check guys. We are playing the best and BR has every right to play the best he has available AND in the style he likes. I don't want Celtic to park the bus away from home, we did this before and still got beat. Before first game with PSG, we would have taken 3rd place, so what's changed? Going to raise a point here but was wondering what the view was of Kennedy as defensive coach.?

I wasn't sure about him under RD was surprised a wee bit when he stayed but our defence is still our issue and has been for a while.
Now Toure involved I think it's a step in right direction but I think we need to move big John along as despite the injuries we should be doing the basics, better.

I love Celtic being in the CL and I don't expect Celtic to win most of the CL games but i do expect some better performances from our players - we gave the ball away far to easy and the goals came from set plays. That said we will only improve under Brendan.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

19 Oct 2017 16:29:31
Thats what a lot of people don't understand imo mate, is that we are playing teams who play the same brand of football as us, but with squads 100 times better than us, they make us look average, as we do to every team domestically.

He made a big deal about playing without fear against Bayern but sadly the players looked terrified to get on the ball at times. I think Ntcham needs a wee break to get himself sorted because he's been way off it.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Oct 2017 07:24:22
Ntcham is an easy target he gave the ball away as he is one of the few on the park trying a positive pass instead of an easy one I played sat morn Glasgow amateur football and was on a useful team but there were the two top teams and when they didn’t have the ball they swarmed over you to try get it back and to try your usual passing find a team mate play was tough nearly impossible so all these panty wetters coming on giving it oh we as Celtic fans expect better look at the big picture Bayern bring on wee Spanish pronunciation jamez Rodríguez 80 million quid player we bring on jamez Forrest that’s the difference guys get with the programme.

lads, just signed up today to give my thoughts and opinions, as I have been on this reading some of your comments from the transfer window until now. I agree with most of u on some of your comments at times but we always have to stick behind our team and manager.

Rodgers is doing the best he can with the team he has, he might not always get it right but he's 100% the right man for the job we never get an easy group in the champions league, I can remember reading 1 of your comments saying use hope for the likes of psg and real in our group then we got psg and they hammered us then use complain lol I was hoping for the easiest draw possible as we always get the toughest group.

If use look at how Leicester city had a good run in the champions league they got it easy enough avoiding all the heavys and got knocked out by Athletico Madrid in quarters. But we're more suited for europa league this season next season Rodgers will get it right, we run in europa after Christmas with a new cb i'll be happy even tho some of use will have something bad to say still.

Realistically we're going to perhaps qualify for last 16 every 4/ 5 years or so.

The money rolls in for making the groups and we know we can't compare financially to teams like bayern so will enevitably be pumped with the odd draw or win along the way.

I'm comfortable with that so long as we Continue to dominate at home.

Listening to Rob McLean on commentary last night and sutton for that matter, getting tore in every 30 seconds about the score an how it could get worse etc, literally gave me the boak.

Reading the BBC post-mortem on it was equally as howfin.

They bask in us losing in champions league, as if we shouldn't bother turning up after qualification.

Yet when we fail to qualify they're all over us for being a poor side.

Fans getting on the gaffer's back after a defeat to bayern, are as bad as these goons, if not worse.

Guy on tv tonight (old owner of newcastle) saying new owner coming in would need to spend 5 or 6 HUNDRED MILLION POUNDS to compete in e&wpl.
And he's right.

And i bet then they couldn't compete with real, Barca, bm and psg.

My issue is that we had the cash but didn't buy any cover for defence. That seems short sighted. May not have made the slighted difference last night but seems like mismanagement of the squad.

Reading the posts and banter about Gordon, Ntcham, Gamboa etc. etc. and very few are pointing the blame at Brendan. he picks them. He seems he'll bent on playing big Ntcham when the fellas obviously struggling a bit and even allowing for injuries to go to Munich with a makeshift defence was criminal. How Ntcham and Gamboa came out for the second half is beyond me. SA was nowhere near fit and at this level you need all 11 to be at it. If the word is correct Brendan has clout in the corridors of CP. Time to rattle a few cages and demand funds to strengthen this team. The summer signings have taken us backwards but as always we never seem to strengthen from a position of power. I feel it's make or break time regarding where we want to be. Domestic dominance is paramount for me but we can't continue to put dross performances like that in year in year out.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

{Ed007's Note - So without spending obscene amounts of money that we don't have how do we compete with teams like PSG and Bayern?
And if you have an answer for that you should contact clubs like Accies or Hibs to tell them how they can compete with Celtic as it's basically the same thing.}

19 Oct 2017 14:15:13
That's okay if it was 3-0 against a club nearer our stature.
Nothing unexpected about being beaten 0-3 away at bm (or 0-5 at home against psg) .
We can't compete with their spending.
I agree tho that as a team playing in the cl 2 years running and looking to be in el after Christmas and cl next season we should not have a makeshift ANYTHING. Seems we have overinvested in the midfield for a decade to the detriment of our defence and forward line.
As much as I like him I don't think we can start with Sinclair in tough European games. The guy cannot defend. Play someone who can and if the scores are close bring him on for the last 20.
Apart from weak goals I am not too disappointed. I will be if we go into another season with a makeshift ANYTHING.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Good post mate. I remember a time not so long ago on here when people - not you specifically, Digi, I don't know if you were one of them - were adamant that results in the CL didn't matter as long as we're in there and collecting the money.
Now it's a disaster to some people if we lose away to Bayern Munich.}

19 Oct 2017 14:17:50
Ed . point taken but I'm not expecting to compete with your PSGs and Bayern of this world maybe be a bit stronger and put up a better show. A full strength team probably wouldn't have got a result but with our resources albeit pocket money compared to the elite we should be able to call on better than Gamboa and Ntcham. I can understand how other clubs fans gloat at our expense but our concern we can only look after ourselves and part of my point is if we do TIAR then as a club we have to decide what our priorities are when we reach the CL groups and I appreciate it would be suicidal to go mad with the dosh as a certain Scottish club once did . God rest them.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - But you're still not explaining how we should 'put up a better show' against some of the best teams in the world? Would Lustig at RB with Sviatchenko or Bitton at CB got us a draw?
Seeing Gamboa and Ntcham seem to be your fall guys, I think KT was just as bad as Gamboa. Stuart Armstrong once again proved what everyone with any sense and a pair of eyes knows, that he's not and never will be a No.10, Sinclair might as well stayed at home to watch Corrie with his Mrs and LG proved again that he struggles at the higher CL levels.
The only 2 players I'd give pass marks to last night were Boyata and Roberts.
Do you think challenging for the CL should be one of our priorities?}

19 Oct 2017 14:40:52
Jesus wept, talk about fans on here being out of touch with reality, Everyone on here that thinks we can compete with these teams should be sectioned asap, We will never compete with these clubs due to finances, Even if the defence was full strength we wouldve got tonked, They are 3rd favorites to win it, i've noticed the ones that were against the europa as its beneath them, are the same ones that are first on here spouting dross, You want the moon on a stick.

Your right ed, the goalposts have moved in the CL in the last 2-3 years, the best are now light years away and we can't catch up due to their considerable spending and the gap is getting bigger.
Only a few years ago a 4m player would have done a good turn for us in the CL now he is a very average player, u need a 100m player to make a difference now.
Our prize is just getting there and while results won't matter too much we have to look long term and see improvement in our team and if we get Europa league then its been achieved.
Getting to the last 16 whilst not impossible should be out of our minds for the foreseeable future unless something changes or we get an amazing draw.

Hi Ed.

Have to agree with you here. I said it before and after the draw was made and the game against PSG. Celtic unfortunately don't have the finance to compete with the big team like PSG and Bayern. I would love if we could but our top transfer cost 4.5 million and PSG have a front three of close to 500 million. And unfortunately the results like these will happen to us and some teams in pot 3 and pot 4. Just look at how many big scorelines there have been so far in this year tournament.

The lads are trying there best but unfortunately class will rise to the top at this level. This is like us in the spl. We are miles ahead and have the quality to do the same to most if not all teams in the spl. I fully understand everyone being annoyed and upset with these result but we just can't compete against the top teams in Europe. The money divide is just too vast.

People have to remember that last week there were posts praising gambo and nitham and this week they are getting slated. One team is dundee and this is the mighty Bayern.

Brendan is trying he best against massive odds and the fact is we are still third and can still be in Europe after Christmas. Anyone who was thinking we could compete for anything other than third in this group needs to have a look at the financial power against us.

In Brendan we trust.

{Ed007's Note - Spot on, Oscar.}

its not even the naymars and the robbens. its was the amazing midfielder at PSG they subbed before the end and the 2 guys on the left wing and one of the goal scorers for bm, I admit I'm not up on world football, a bit celtic blinkered, but I had never heard of these guys and they are WORLD CLASS.

even near the end they brought on Hames!

its a different world from us. many people slag off lustig in here, I think he's descent, but he's never been a centre back in his puff and playing him there is asking for trouble. Gamboa is quick. and the 2 on the wing were strolling past him - that's the step up in quality we are up against.

So not disappointed, saying the goals were avoidable just meant they would have scored another way. We just aren't good enough at that level.

Our mission last year was to be better than BMG - this year we have to be better than Anderleicht and that is the progress we are hoping for.

But we can't not recruit a centre back and 1 in 1 out and a permanent decent striker. guess we will just get a couple of midfielders tho. lol.

Undefeated so far in league AGAIN, semi final on saturday the domestic dominant juggernaut rolls on.
Champs league? let's get real bhoys (all i looked for in the draw was where the next party was going to be) . Beating Anderlecht away was a great result our euro campaign was always going to come down to a 2 legged affair and job half done.
Domestic dominance and europa after xmas and it will be a great season .

I think all the ones going on about competing with the big boys are missing the point, that's three games where there were occasions of bad passing, even against Anderlecht at the start they, well certain players, couldn't find a team mate, it's all well and good going on about a better class of team, and PSG and Bayern, are that, but there is something fundamentally wrong when you can't even make an easy pass, I can't remember them making so many bad passes in last year's CL.

My granda always used to tell me how skilful players like Charlie Tully were. He told me how proud the fans were of the team after humiliating the animals in the final. My era was the Nine in a row with the quality street gang but my granda would rave of the many skilful and robust players we had in the 50s. He left me with so many great memories of what it meant to be a lifelong Celtic fan. Hail Hail.

ED001/ ED007 which ever EDitor is about.
Can one of you explain the Loaning of players procedure.
Reason I am asking is that I read that Plymouth are thinking of cancelling Cifcti's loan with them and returning player to Celtic.
I was under the impression that these loans formed part of a contract ie the recipient club agreeing to take player for 6 months/ a year depending on length of loan.
Can Plymouth simply just tear up this loan agreement because of player's poor form.

{Ed007's Note - A loan deal can be cancelled at any time during the season if both clubs concerned agree.}

I do not have BT (pay for sly and refuse to pay extra for BT also) so had to rely on radio and BBC Shortbread and 5 Live. First thing that I noticed was absolute joy in that t! t Tom English's voice on how Bayern "gave us a doing" switched to 5Live and then had to endure "Proddy" Forsyth who was having an orgasm on air describing "how poor Celtic were"
Then I heard that Craigan of Motherwell and Logan of Aberdeen were tweeting their delight at us getting beat, they must have really short memories as both their clubs benefit to the sum of £375,000 BECAUSE Celtic are in the Champions League group stages, but I guess their bigotry trumps that.

I listened on the radio as well and was whatsapping a friend in Munich at the same time, who was watching on TV, Tom English came across as pro Celtic compared to the way she was describing it, but then again she is a Munich supporter.

Timalloy spot on. let's see how the club chairmen react if one year the money Celtic earn for them isn't there. Next season they get £400k for this sessons qualification. that's 10% of motherwells turnover. no one else is going to qualify so without Celtic they get hee haw.

Tim someone on here will have bt sports, should swap bud, give them your sky go details and swap them for bt sports that you can watch on laptop, i've been doing that with my mate for a while now since i got rid of sky.

I'd be happy to swap with you Tim that way we both get both for the price of one.

@jmac - you’ll probably find all chairmen don’t budget for the potential windfall. I mean Celtic don’t even gamble and buy players until you have qualified.
And is the money not supposed to be used for youth development?

Thoughts on last night:
Didn’t expect a result. We were playing a European powerhouse with endless talent.
However disappointed in the way we conceded our goals. We simply can’t defend. Injuries to Jozo (and Erik) didn’t help. We really should have signed a CB in the summer – there is no excuses for why we didn’t! Must be a priority come January.
We looked much better with Dembele, Forrest and Rogic on the park. Rogic is stronger than Armstrong and can take the ball on the turn. Paddy is by far the better player and done well on the ball but Forrest quicker and more direct, and overall more suited to the game last night. Dembele created a couple opportunities once he came on and his physical presence made a big difference.

NC its more than a centre half. On the 2nd goal they had 3 men free with no celtic player within 5 yarfs of any of them. A new centre back can't do much when thst happens. The entire defensive set up must be wrong. Has been for years but agree we need better defenders. Gamboa got ripped to shreds so at this level we are mince but badly organised at the back.

I agree mate. We need to strengthen in a few areas, just CB should be our priority.

RB is another position as you mentioned. Gamboa got roasted and Lustig is getting on, so that's def another area that needs looked at.

If we could get another Wanyama type player in the middle of the park, would be great for these tough CL games.

I think its time McGregor gets a run in the team and actually keeps his place. He's been our best midfielder when he's played this season, but gets dropped for big games. I think ntcham needs dropped and should fight to get back into the team. He started very well this season but his level has really dropped. Especially on big CL nights. Gets caught on the ball and struggles with the basics. Dunno if it's going to take him a while to adjust from playing at Man City development level. Lots complaining that McGregor should be starting for Scotland, yet he rarely starts for us!

He's better than ntcham that's for sure but think the bhoy needs time. think January might be a busy month right back and cb a necessity if we want to compete in europa.

Aye I think he'll be good. Just needs to sharpen up a bit. I'd like to see Ajer get game time, given no reason not to trust him.

Too right. January needs to be a busy month. Crying out for a right back and someone to play along side Dedryk.

I could understand BR playing Ntcham and Brown to protect our fragile defence but once again in Europe there was a nervousness and fear (not only from the young guys) that contributed to our poor performance and defeat.
All three goals were from static defending and basic errors and the inability to keep the ball at this level is lethal.
Ntcham does seem to struggle at this level but he is still learning, while guys like Gordon Lustig and Sinclair have little or no excuse and have all been under par all season.
Broony looked off the pace as he recovers from injury and for all LG's quality - the lone striker role is not his forte in tough CL away games where support is well nigh zero.
