What's your thoughts on playing mulgrew at left back on Tuesday with izzy in front of him?

Believable2 Unbelievable7

20 Aug 2015 00:26:14
Izzy can't cross a ball to save himself. We'd likely have Forrest on the other side too which means you have no decent service from either flank.

Agree1 Disagree5

20 Aug 2015 00:42:54
He was really poor tonight! I do think we will need to put mulgrew in for better defensive cover!

Agree0 Disagree2

20 Aug 2015 01:55:02
You may not believe it, but Mulgrew would be even worse in these games, you only have to look at his performances last year in the CL Qualifiers. When he also came on against Inverness just there he looked atrocious. We need a new LB which is obvious, but Izzy is the best option atm in that position. After Tuesday though that should be his last start in Europe for us. Just need to hope he has another game like he did in Quarbag but lightning doesn't seem like it will strike twice somehow.

Agree0 Disagree1

20 Aug 2015 08:37:36
I actually thought of that too last season when Izzy was getting found out, but two wrongs don't make a right as others have pointed out. The truth is we have struggled at left back since I can remember and several managers have failed to rectify the continuing weakness.

Agree1 Disagree0

20 Aug 2015 08:44:44
The real worry is who will play RB I couldn't watch when Ambrose came on when our CL hopes are in the balance and his 10mins was a shambles why is he still at the club. Its about time Lustig moved to CB solid player but he doesn't have the legs as a wing back now and its causing him injuries

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 22:58:30
Firstly, Well done to the magnificent crowd tonight.

Secondly, I'd have taken any win at 7.45pm. Disappointed with the goals conceeded and i'd stick Janko in at right back if Lustig doesn't recover.

We can go there and win. KTF

Believable6 Unbelievable3

19 Aug 2015 22:56:18
Who the hell do we play at right back right next week!? Ambrose the bomb scare, Janko who has started 1 game for us, Fisher who looks decent but has never played anywhere near that level, Mulgrew who is all left foot? Brown has filled in there before and is probably the best option to play there but then he won't be in the middle of the park where he is badly needed! I think Ambrose will get the nod .

Believable1 Unbelievable1

19 Aug 2015 23:55:59
The problem is none of them play to that level at the back, tonight the distribution from the back line was terrible.

Bitton after his goal the standard of his passing was not up to his usual relaxed pressure free style.

A decent manager will have a pacy striker close down Boyata all match when he has the ball at his feet as his distribution skills leave a lot to the imagination.

Izzy again great going forward but lacks a final ball and can't defend.

A great start to the night 2 up with 10mins played and looking like given them a right doing but we fell away and let them right back into the game. Once again a former player comes back to bite us, we really need to start to wisen up to these same problems.

A result but not a healthy one I fear the return leg.

I hate putting the team down like this but it's a worrying trend. Fingers crossed we can get a couple over there.

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Aug 2015 00:44:23
I'd gamble janko over ambrose he's too much of a risk! Maybe we should play boyata at RB and lustig at CB when fit again!

Agree0 Disagree1

20 Aug 2015 02:01:08
Lustig will almost definitely be out now, feel for him because you can see how genuinely upset he is at his constant injuries. Usually a player injured as often I take a dislike to as I feel they are a wage thief who care little for the club(i.e Boeriggter)but with Lustig you can tell he cares. Sadly don't see Lustig really ever recovering, just one of these things.

I've got time for Ambrose but he is never a RB, so Ambrose shouldn't be an option there. With Lustig out it's between Janko and Fisher. Fisher hasn't really featured much with the first team recently so can see Janko getting the nod on Saturday to show what he can do there. Got to say though, he hasn't really impressed me so far and people who have worked with him like Mjallby say he isn't really a RB and more of a RW. Can't really see any other option than Janko though. This is why we should have kept Matthews(I do realise he wanted to leave but we should have kept him till after CL Qualifers).

Agree1 Disagree0

20 Aug 2015 08:39:53
It has to be Janko, but Deila seems to rate Ambrose above him, so it looks like we will be exposed on two sides for a while.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 22:33:54
Wasn't too sure how to start my rant; Is it non investment in the squad and settling for inferior players?
Are the same culprits making the same mistakes week in week out (that's 6 goals we've lost in three games)
Was it nerves from the manager filtering through to the players - as RD never looked confident?

Whatever the reasons, we twice threw a 2 goal advantage away and have given the impetus to Malmo.
The team were ultra nervous and hesitant - even after a dream start that should have boosted their confidence and sealed the result.
We added insult to 'injury' as the stoppages for Lustig and Bitton came back to bite us at the death and the lapse in concentration may have cost the club millions.

It could (and should) have been a different story as Griffiths took his goal expertly and Bitton again weighed in with a goal, while Forrest seemed to be well up for the game and then we panicked.

I hope we can get a draw next Tuesday and progress, but part of me thinks we have too many players who are out of their depth at this level and will be embarrassed in the group stages when we face even better class opposition.

Izzaguire, Ambrose, Ciftci, GMS and a couple more are never CL players and any half-decent players we have are usually sold on and replaced with Aldi equivalents.
That's why we may well end up in the Aldi - sorry Europa Cup.

Believable3 Unbelievable3

20 Aug 2015 02:05:08
Squad needs a bit of an overhaul should we reach the CL Group Stages which I don't have a lot of confidence about. But, SHOULD we progress past Malmo. If I'm being really strict with the first 11.

Then we need a RB(Lustig injury prone), LB, two CBs(Even if/when VVD leaves as Boyata isn't good enough), LW, CAM and a striker. If we are to progress as a side.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 22:19:35
Why didn't delia put mulgrew on for griffiths and put gms up front on his own at 3-1

Believable0 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2015 22:41:36
Because then Mulgrew would be on the park

Agree2 Disagree1

20 Aug 2015 01:26:26
And Ambush a better option?

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Aug 2015 02:06:35
You forgetting Mulgrew gave away TWO pens in ONE game last season? A player should never really play again after that as that's just plain awful. The only other player I can think that's done that is Keith Lasley.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 22:06:53
Still in it folks!

But if lustig out for the away leg & it looks like it we are in bother if Efe starts! IMO

Believable2 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2015 22:06:39
Some fans need to be realistic cmon, we won, most important thing, we will score over there, their defence is terrible, nothing to worry about, keep the faith!

Believable6 Unbelievable8

19 Aug 2015 22:10:25
Brilliant post

Agree1 Disagree1

19 Aug 2015 22:24:05
Don't understand the being realistic comment? That is a poor result. Why did RD bring on GMS when we needed to settle down and keep the score down. We knew they would have to open up in last 15 mins to get anything and I think RD tried to kill the game off. Bad call. We have a real battle on now. Giving away 2 goals in a European home tie. Poor

Agree3 Disagree1

19 Aug 2015 23:39:00
Silly post. Malmo only have to win 1-0 and we are out on away goals. With our record in away in Europe, there is a real cause for concern

Agree1 Disagree2

19 Aug 2015 22:06:11
Let's be positive. We are in a better position than Basel, Vienna and Skenderbeu. HH

Believable5 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2015 22:21:59
Not really. Those teams don't have an Ambrose, Boyata or Izaguirre.

Agree1 Disagree1

19 Aug 2015 23:01:34
Couldnt blame Boyata or Izzy tonight. Look at the first goal and big Virgol is marking fresh air. Second goal although bad and a huge element of luck about it.

Agree3 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 23:30:49
Izzy was terrible tonight as he has been for a while now . Plays at a level below the rest bar Ambrose .If we go with Izzy and Ambrose next week we're doomed to the Europa league. Fact

Agree1 Disagree0

20 Aug 2015 07:22:10
Izzy was at fault for the first goal by giving them the ball and then not attacking it when it came near him.
Again we gave away possession far too easily but I'm confident we can still progress

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Aug 2015 09:39:24
The first goal all came from a poor attempted pass by Scott Brown which set them on attack. When Berget shot big Boyata bricked it, he was standing right where the shot was going and would have blocked it but then moved a step to his right letting the ball fly past him and into the net.

2nd goal bit of a calamity.

We will always give the ball away in Europe with these players simply because most aren't good enough to retain possession and find a man in a hooped shirt 9.5/10. The only players I feel comfortable with on the ball that I know will most times find a Celtic player with a pass are Bitton, Virgil and Lustig on that pitch last night. The rest of the players will all be hit and miss in possession and this is one of our biggest problems.

Btw, looks like we did well to avoid Tel Aviv going by that result against Basel last night.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 22:04:42
If celtic go through the board must sanction a left back, right back who is not prone to injury and a decent striker ( Hartson or a Sutton not Hooper)

Believable2 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2015 21:58:07
Classic Celtic performance apart from the first 10 minutes. Had they kept up the tempo for another twenty minutes the tie could have been out of sight. How many shocking performances does izzy have to put in until someone realises he's a defender who can't defend. Have to go and put a massive performance in next week now. Here's hoping.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2015 21:58:02
First off disappointed with the late goal tonight but we must believe we are good enough to score over there!!
On another note Ed do you think we should read anything into Simunovic not playing for Dinamo tonight a must win game and he was on the bench and never came on I thought he was there best defender? I couldn't see us not playing Vigil in our most important game of the season

Believable1 Unbelievable0

19 Aug 2015 21:54:52
Same old same old celtic you get what u pay for not even gone watch 2nd leg gone take malmo -2 goals. if you buy spl players you get spl standard

I'm allowed to be angry at our small thinking board who year after year let us down and make us look amateur. seriously is this not de ja vu? Come on. how many time does this happen? My frustration builds year after year watching us selling anything decent we have. keep the crap and replace with inferior players

I hope I'm proved wrong and il be the happiest fan in the world if I have egg on my face but I think that 2nd goal was the final nail in the coffin.the board are a joke and they making our team a joke

Agree1 Disagree1

20 Aug 2015 01:25:47
The board are using sevco as an excuse not to pay the going rate for players. wages as well as transfer fees.

The year we beat barca we made 24m from champions league.sold ki wanyama hooper and Wilson for 26m.that's 50m

19 Aug 2015 21:49:27
How bad are our full backs (not Lustig)?
Izzy never won a tackle all night and his crossing is woeful to say the least. Efe, well he is just Efe, I actually said when he came on "oh well 3-2 will have to do".
Cmon PL get us a LB now!

Absolutely pathetic. All over them and the match still finishes 3-2. Celtic summed up.

We deserve to go out next week. Disgraceful.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

19 Aug 2015 21:54:01
We won the game! How can that be disgraceful!? They are no mugs. We seem to think we have a devine right to win games. I'd have taken any win before kick off. We'll still go through

There are some supporters on here that just open the mouth and let the belly rumble! Celtic are clearly a better team and yes we gave to defend better. I'm sure we will score at least a couple over there! Hail Hail

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 22:05:03
Same old stuff I'm afraid! Sloppy play cost us the 2 goals! They were average at best! Should have finished the tie in the 1st half! I see nothing but heart ache next Tuesday! 2 goals conceded in each of our last 3 games! Not good enough I'm afraid! But like I said before,if we can't beat teams like Malmo then we don't deserve the CL!

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 22:12:26

C'mon bhoys it's not impossible. It's going to be a hard game next week but we can do it, bitton is a worry and so is lustig but we need to keep the faith and believe that the squad can get us through. Am not sayin play for a draw but if we stay calm and don't push too much in the first half an hour, just concentrate on not conceding then they'll need to commit more bodies n we can pick them off late first half/early second half n kill the tie. Mon the hoops!

Agree0 Disagree0

20 Aug 2015 08:47:43
Dh88 I'm embarrassed at BigBhoy saying that Celtic are pathetic and disgraceful because they lost a goal late on which was a crap goal, but these things happen. Also he suggests that if we draw next week we still deserve to go out. Aye, ok 'bigbhoy'

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 20:43:22
What a fantastic start by the Hoops and some great football too.
Two early goals was more than most people expected and it certainly had the Malmo manager worried.
We seemed to not know whether to stick or bust after that and some nervy moments crept in - all over the park - and the back four all made silly mistakes - luckily unpunished.
Izzaguire is having another dodgy game and needs hooked or protected?
We need to keep it simple, take no risks at the back and encourage them as we are in command.

On the whole delighted with a 2-0 half time lead and the break will give RD a chance to have a word with one or two and organise the game-plan for the second half.
Another goal and a clean sheet would be fantastic Bhoys.

Why is it old players always come back to haunt us , especially the crappy ones

Agree2 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 22:09:01
Ex players coming to Celtic Park 'to haunt us' is all too familiar and I bet we are the only club that suffers so much from this - especially from dudds who couldnae kick their own erse when they wore the hoops!
There are plenty ex-players from other clubs who go back to their ex-employers and never try a leg - but never us.

Good luck to the bhoys the night, keep it tight at the back and nip a couple of goals, a lot better than this side, and the cheek coming from their players I hope we annihilate them. Believable1 Unbelievable2

{Ed007's Note - He's a disruptive influence in the dressing room and I think his selfish arrogant attitude and ego would cause problems behind the scenes. His fitness is also a concern as he seems to have a long standing problem with his right ankle that hampered his time in Naples last season.
Michu has stated that one of his ambitions is to go to Scotland to find the Loch Ness Monster so maybe CFC will use that as a bargaining tool, he could maybe borrow Keech Jackson's high quality radar.....}

Time for the weekly debate, Griffiths or Ciftci. I think Ciftci will get the nod once again. We've got through 2 rounds with him up front so I see no reason to change that. They'll be a big physical side so he'd me more suited to the challenge than Griffiths, who can come on in the last 20 and nick a goal or 2 when they tire. Nervy night in store and I'd take any win. Celtic 2 Malmo 0 is my prediction

Believable0 Unbelievable5

19 Aug 2015 08:05:12
It's a tough call I think. We created an awkward situation by not signing another forward as ciftci can't be match fit due to the league ban and Ronnie seems to want to play him for Europe . Lg is scoring regularly though. In saying that I'm hoping for a two or possibly three goal lead . I'm praying we put on a good show and Malmรถ can't live with it, and the fans play their part as usual. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

Agree0 Disagree2

19 Aug 2015 08:36:13
2-0 would be perfect although if they're there for the taking we should finish them or we will have a nervy 2nd leg like last season

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 08:49:04
The annoying thing about the whole Ciftci situation is that the guy doesn't hold the ball up. I don't think he's a bad player, but he's not the big man to hold the ball up that we need. I'd go with Griffiths. I have no faith that Ciftci will score or make something happen. I'll leave the door open for him to prove me wrong!

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 09:03:41
I think Ronny might surprise a few people and go with both of them up top tonight

Agree0 Disagree1

19 Aug 2015 10:10:13
It is a tough call. Ones game is more suited to 1 up in Europe but can't score. The other can scire but his game isn't suited. Start Ciftci bring on Griffiths too for me. Probability would tell you that surely NC has to start putting some away.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 11:15:12
Personally you play the man in form LG but I don't expect that from Ronny so I think NC will start. If they are going to be physical at the back then play LG as he's more likely to get away from them. Lm67 you think lg might come on with 20 min and Nick a goal or two then your prediction is poss 0-0 with NC for 70min that would be a very nervy night lol. I'm confident if lg starts for 3-0 with commons putting 3rd in with a cameo 20 min at the end. Hail hail

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 11:27:49
Think u make a great point NT87! I really don't know where this ciftci holds the ball up stuff comes from! I've watched him for Dundee Utd and for us and I've never seen it! I really don't think there should be a debate, wee griffiths should start all day long! Nothing I've seen in ciftci with us or Dundee Utd impresses me! Wee griffiths deserves the chance to show what he can do from the start!

Agree0 Disagree1

19 Aug 2015 12:19:59
BigTim I've hoped that a few times, starting to think that he is going to go with 4-2-3-1 no matter what. It's obviously his thing and he'll stick with it. I think at home in Europe and always in the league we could play 2 up top. Brown and bitton are good enough to play in a midfield 2; then could play a narrow midfield with johansen and another. Griffiths or Ciftci would no doubt pull wide at points

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 13:40:40
Id personally start griffiths bcus he's the man in form and I think it would just be a bit of a kick in the teeth for him what else can he do to get into the team other than clearly be the best striker we have rn

Agree0 Disagree1

19 Aug 2015 15:27:06
I don't think he will start both as we have lost four goals in two games and that will be a concern.
Therefore I expect 4-4-1-1 or 4-5-1 formation.
Griffiths is the man in form, but Ciftci needs games - and under his current suspension, the CL is the only place to get his sharpness and fitness levels up to our standard.
Therefore I think he will start with one striker and bring the other on later in the game.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 15:58:21
I suppose the other position where a starting spot is up for grabs is on the right wing. GMS will probably start but he hasn't played well so far this season despite being our best player in preseason. Forrest was excellent against Killie last week but blows hot and cold (mostly cold)! Surely its a night for Kris Commons? His ability to score a goal out of nothing are what nights like this are made for!

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 17:16:55
Griffiths had his chance to impress last season when he started both home games at home to Salzburg and Inter Milan. He had big chances in those matches to prove what he could do at that level against much better sides than we face domestically and he failed to deliver. A sitter of a header against Salzburg and a chance against Inter which he snatched at by hitting it straight at the keeper when all he had to do was lift the ball over him, he can't cut it against these sides. I understand Malmo aren't as good as Inter and Salzburg but I can understand why Ronny doesn't trust him at this level. Yeah he's on form scoring against your Kilmarnocks, Inverness' etc. But come on this is a step up. I don't rate Cifcti highly either and should we progress into the CL I don't think either of them will be leading the line personally this season. Can see Stokes and Scepovic leaving with Griffiths, Cifcti and a new striker being our three choices this season.

Anyway for tonight though I feel he'll go with Cifcti and I won't argue with that decision, he'll bring Griffiths on with 20 mins to go most likely.

LM67, on the right wing personally I would start with Commons, just feel he brings good experience, goals and technique. Yeah he can be a little slow but he can spot a pass an is a goal threat. Scored twice against Swedish opposition in the past in Helsingborg and Elfsborg. However I do feel he'll stick with GMS, which in his current form will be the wrong choice imo. Forrest played wel against Killie because he was played out on the left, he plays better there than on the right imo, so I wouldn't play Forrest unless it was left wing but with Armstrong a guaranteed starter I would leave Forrect on the bench perhaps as an impact sub.

Regardless I'm pretty sure we'll see Commons, Griffiths and Forrest all come on at some point.
