I see UEFA had a meeting today to make it even harder for teams from Smaller nations And Smaller leagues to gain entry to the Champions League. Now they want the top 4 teams from England, Spain, Germany and Italy to go straight into the Group faze without the need of any Pre-Qualification. The Champions League was started for the CHAMPIONS from every European league to compete against each other. There trying to make it impossible for Teams such as Celtic, Basel, Anderlecht etc to make it. I hate UEFA anyways but these such actions there taking is just making it even easier for teams from Scotland, Holland, Switzerland etc to make our own league competition and just tell UEFA to F**k Off!

Believable7 Unbelievable1

16 Aug 2016 23:20:24
Are you honestly surprised?
I think in the not to distant future the big teams will break away from uefa and form there own "super league" and tell uefa to ram it.
Uefa know this and I suspect are trying to prolong the inevitable and keep the super clubs happy.
As much as I dislike uefa if the super clubs said they wanted a CL primarily made up of champions they would honour it with a cherry on top as there is an honourable or trustworthy person amongst them.

Blame the super clubs mate there bleeding the game dry and want to maximise there revenues, similar to uefa this is business and to them it's not personal.

I take great pride in us qualifying because it's a massive get it up yas to them.

16 Aug 2016 23:43:22
I was a cynic of the story that the new super league is in its final stages of planning. I was wrong and didn't buy it. I've read more into it since and I'll admit I was wrong, there is something in it. Look back in the archives there is a lot to be read on here and beond.
Anyway. From reading it is a real possibility that after 2020 it could go ahead.
This uefa meeting cries out as a desperate move to try to stop these top 20 or so clubs breaking away. It seems to be a counter offer of sorts to their proposed plans. Money would of been the big talking point. Sky must be creaming their pants.

17 Aug 2016 00:07:22
I've said it time and time again, football as we all know and love is F**KD and it will continue to get worse! The so called bigger clubs and in particular the ones from the EPL have ruined football! It's not about the football anymore it's about money plain and simple! Makes me sick to my stomach honestly! And UEFA are a total embarrassment! Corrupt cheating dirty bastards! Sporting integrity went out the window years ago with these scumbags! Like another poster said, these so called big clubs will break away and do there own things soon enough! Either that or it will be no team from outside these big 4 countries will be allowed in the CL! It will be the top 8 teams from each going into it! Total farce! There will never be enough money to satisfy the greed of these clubs!

Having read a bit about the breakaway we were apparently wanted for the second division of this for the same reason we got invited to weekends tournament.

17 Aug 2016 00:42:08
Europes true big clubs are Man U, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barca, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Bayern Munich, and Celtic . All those clubs have had a huge worldwide fanbase for decades, unlike the new sky tv money funded/ sugar daddy funded so called big clubs like Chelski and Man C.

Scottish football is on its ar$e. A national side that hasn't qualified for a tournament since France 98, a top flight league where there has been no scottish teams presence in CL group stages in 3 years and will be a 1 horse race for many seasons to come. No wonder this is the case.

Agree0 Disagree3

17 Aug 2016 01:35:48
The CL shouldn't be a reflection on our domestic league.
If we win our league we should have the same right as any other club and so should Scandinavian teams etc.
Systematically they have been making it almost impossible not just to qualify but when you get there you have a rigged seading system that favours the big teams.
Remember back in 99 when man utd had Barcelona and bayern in there group and the Germans went out, that's exactly why it's been implemented to prevent this happening again.

Agree0 Disagree1

17 Aug 2016 01:39:29
Hopefully us being former winners of The European Cup will give us some clout in the negotiations with Uefa, and also the fact that our stadium has the best atmosphere in the whole CL might swing an invite our way.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed007's Note - That's not going to happen. Anyone who's followed the site knew this was coming and no matter what romantic stuff you come up with Celtic will not be involved. We haven't even been invited to any talks about it over the years let alone have any chance of an invite.
It's just the harsh reality of it mate, believe me I've threw every reason you can think of to people better informed than me, it ain't happening.}

17 Aug 2016 02:28:04
We can only dream ed, maybe our friends at Barcelona could put a word in for us lol, i knew we hadn't been invited to the top table but hoped that the fact that we are one of the biggest team's historically in Europe would count for something. Surely Lawwell would approach Uefa and say "Hey what about us? we are a massive club" Maybe he has already and been given a knock back? Who knows? Aye mate it's certainly harsh on us.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - It's one of the reasons I'm so indifferent, even negative at times, about the importance we put on the CL. They would and will cut us loose in a minute if they get the chance and it angers me to see a club like Celtic begging for their scraps.}

17 Aug 2016 03:43:06
Sorry folks this seems the perfect case to take to CAS or the European courts. Just another situation like FIFA and the Olympics. sport not as it was meant to be and i seriously hope someone sorts this mess out. Sport out of control. very sad and people need to take a MASSIVE REALITY CHECK!

What people don't realise is that these so called elite need us mugs to keep funding them via sky, bt sport etc. I certainly won't be paying subs to watch something we are not in. If all fans over Europe in the same boat do likewise, we could choke the fockers into submission.

Agree1 Disagree1

17 Aug 2016 09:41:40
I agree with ed. The place we think we occupy in the hearts of Uefa is all in our heads. The facts are as stated, nobody has sought to include us. Nobody even asked if we had a view.

Things are looking grim but I am still hopeful it won't be as bad.

Bottom line though is this.,

If they make it harder for us to be there we need to step up and make sure we are good enough to still qualify.

17 Aug 2016 13:47:35
In reality bhoys and it kills me to say this but why would the elite clubs or audience's want us in the CL?
Our feelings and opinion of our club is dwarfed by the greed of the business clubs, they want money and we want the prestige of mixing with the elite and unfortunately the greed will win this fight. The audience want the wow factor every week which we can't offer.

My wee boy asked me last week for a Barcelona top for his birthday with Messi on the back and I said why not a celtic top and he says "I just prefer Barcelona and messi is my favourite player". Don't worry bhoys he's getting a celtic top so that's sorted but it just highlights that the growing audiences want the bigger clubs week in week out.
My boy can be saved but the new audiences in Asia and USA can't be as they want the biggest and best which unfortunately we are not part off.

Hopefully we can qualify a couple more times before the changes and create a bit more history for our proud institution, something money cannot buy.

Watching the under 20's game. i'm suprised the boy Ralston and Aaichison have not been sent out on loan to develop and gain first team experience. I know they are young but they are both good enough to play first team football I think.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

16 Aug 2016 22:20:37
Ralston has been in the 1st team but aitchinson is still young and winning the irn bru cup would be good for them.

16 Aug 2016 22:31:43
Going out on loan isn't a guarantee of improving a young player . I don't think Tierney was loaned out any where and he has done fine . MC Gregor benefitted from going to Notts County. I M O a youngster can use either path to get his break through, he must take his chance when ever he gets it .

Agree1 Disagree5

16 Aug 2016 22:34:03
I really like ralston. I think he could be our next Teirney but it doesn't look like he's going to be giving a lot of first team games with Lustig and Janko so I would like to see another team take a punt on him for a season.

Not Celtic related but I think any Celts that watched Michael Conlon's fight this afternoon will know he was basically robbed
For the first time ever on National TV I heard the defeated fully expressing himself as how he felt . He held nothing back and RTE beebed nothing out . He called them cheats and bastards with the f word preceding both . " them " was the world amateur federation . He gave Russia a touch about drugs and now buying medals everywhere .

He was dead right the poor boy, the rules were changed pre - tournament so that no appeal can be made against decision.
The ref thought he had won as she had clearly started to lift his arm when the announcer said unanimous.

Believable1 Unbelievable3

16 Aug 2016 21:52:57
The russian guy also controversaly beat a fella from thailand which was rediculous, and the heavyweight fight was controversal in favour of a russian, conlons rte interview was perfect for what happened, and he was also right about katie taylor, and fairplay to the bookies paying out for conlon to win the fight, to win the medal and to win gold, boycott amatue olympic boxing, he's a gold medalist in my eyes.

17 Aug 2016 10:41:13
who the heck is Michael Conlon to call people cheats and bastards and accuse them of buying medals? Just because the judge ruled against him doesn't mean the Russian cheated, maybe he should spend more time training and less time watching bbc news. Not one shred o credible proof about Russia's cheating has been presented yet everyone jumped on the propaganda wagon. I mean an America swimmer reduced a Russian swimmer to tears by splashing water in her face and calling her a cheat etc when the Olympic governing body cleared her to play. is this the kind of sportsmanship you support old bhoy?

Cowdenbeath really lost the plot for the last 30 mins . Some of their tackles ranked up their with John Greig and the elbows McCullagh, I would worry about our youngsters playing hammer men like these from Cowdenbeath .

Fair play to the youngsters they played good football and fought hard when needed to.

Bhoys I am going on what I have been told by a guy I do some work for who is an Israeli national and a big football fan. He has a box at White Heart Lane travels all over the place to watch Spurs so he is no football muppet. He knows more about football in Israel than any of us do and he told me before the draw, the team you don't want is be'er Sheva. Now I know nothing more than what he has told me but he is convinced that we won't live with them over the two legs? He thinks they will be the surprise team of the tournament? Having said that he has not seen us this season and we have improved massively. Anyway this team is rated and if we can beat them then maybe it's looking good for the league games. Don't shoot the messenger I am only telling you what I know. This is no pushover.

Hi, first time posting. Just wanted to say that the team have been in terrific form of late and delighted with the new additions to the squad, however this team tomorrow night put out a decent Olympiacos team in the last round so we will have a tough game on our hands. Also Israel is a tough place to go for the second leg, Tel Aviv have given teams like Chelsea a right good game because of the intense atmosphere. 16 Aug 2016 13:21:28
I have got to disagree Bhoy's, I think it will be the hardest game we have had this season, from what I have seen all be it very little this team are no push overs. They beat olympiacos in the last round (and we would be so confident going into a tie against them would we? ) . Let's give this team the respect they deserve and hope our players play to the level they are capable of, I still have my worries about us defensively and fear this team grabbing an away goal. My prediction (having not seen the team for the night) is 3-1. That would be a healthy lead for us going over to what is likely to be a hostile environment. No matter the score for me at least a 2goal lead is what we need.

Agree3 Disagree2

16 Aug 2016 13:49:25
I have to agree with Dundeebhoy.

We have improved and the whole atmosphere in the team seems to be different from last season but we have struggled in 3 of the 4 games in qualifying so far and I am anticipating a hard couple of games.

This team don't concede many goals so we really have to start finishing the chances we are creating.

I am optimistic we will definitely get better this season, but I cannot be as over-confident as some fellow supporters on here.
We have only played one league game and although it was a great result, we did not play particularly well at Swinecastle.
The CL qualifiers - so far have been a mixed bag regarding form, although the attitude and performance of our forwards impressed.
The team has been chopped and changed from week to week, to cater for this International tournament and there have been injuries to key players, so momentum has suffered, although the cup game against Motherwell was as good as I've seen us this season.
The bulk of the squad are the same that failed in Europe before and Gordon always worries me in big games, but again on the positive side, BR seems to getting the best out of the likes of Brown, Forrest and Lustig again and is able to alter tactics and tweak personnel if and when we need to change things up and the additions to the squad has certainly given us a boost.
A victory is possible - but a clean sheet on Wed would be a huge factor for me.

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Aug 2016 17:57:48
I haven't sparky but let's not kid ourselves we have had a few really good performances and a few pretty bad ones, we are however progressing well, I just feel like people are treating this tie like its East Kilbride were playing. No matter how poor olympiacos may be they are still no push overs and neither is this team giving the fact they have made it this far. As I said In my OP I still feel we will win tomorrow but over there is a whole different thing

. As for you Jim my post should have said games yes I went with 3-1 but that is because I believe we need to take at least a 2 goal advantage over there and I think Brendan will know that too. I honestly don't care what the score is aslong as we go through.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Aug 2016 19:55:34
I think we can take it as a given that Brendan knows the type of lead we need to take with us . That's why he is on such a big salary . Too major pluses for us on this round which should make it considerably easier than the last round . They play on grass and haven't started their season yet .
We may well have problems but I think we will be the origin of our mistakes rather than the Israelis. We will win easy enough.

Think it would be a bad move for him, There would be constant comparisons between him and his dad.

About 20 goals in 90 appearances.
Just what we need eh.
Pure quality there.
Like I said not any better than what we have at Parkhead.

I do agree there futnucker there would be comparisons but a good player could deal with that I believe. I'm still hoping we get Roberts tied up. Unlikely tho.

Not the worst record for a 19 year old kev. With better players around him in a better league he could score even more!

We have just signed a 19 year old forward with a better scoring rate at a higher level.
We hAve plenty young strikers that have a lot of potential
I can not see ANYTHING that signing larsson would bring except shirt sales going through the roof.
He's an average striker in an average league.

H Larrson won't let his son play at Celtic . Just too much pressure on the young lad been stopped in the street every few minutes and told how good he was but then be reminded he would never be as good as his father .
I remember, it was either the teenage son of Jimmy Johnstone or George Connolly who was showing a lot of promise but he gave up the game altogether, as he couldn't bear listening to people comparing him to his father.

He plays for his dad's team. I'm sure he would have no problem playin for us either. Sum people enjoy that kind of pressure.

Some people might, that implies most don't enjoy that type of pressure .

No it implies that sum people enjoy it. Sum don't enjoy it but can still succeed along the way.
