So it has been confirmed that Delia is a "Pedagog" well if he is so good at the art of teaching, how come he cannot teach our defence to blooming zonal mark properly

I think it's great he has such a high qualification in how to teach individuals. You have to remember that a lot of that defence is new to the scene, and a couple that were already here don't seem to have the capacity to learn! I think RD has already shown in several players that he can improve them. That said we may need to switch to man marking if things don't improve. It's also important to remember that even though RD was a defender, JK needs to shoulder a lot of the responsibility in that department too.

I suppose you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear and we have some real grunters lugs in that defence these days.
I have no doubt he has an ability to talk and teach a good game, but we need to see it manifested on the pitch.
My main concern is still with the recruitment and transfers - where we never replace like with like (or better) and have dropped well below the CL standard we were famous for.
The International breaks have been a hindrance and an obstacle for consistent progress so far and I look forward to seeing the team get to grips with the challenges ahead and seeing the theory put into practice.

Exactly tim. Depending which way you look at it the club made/saved £12-13m this summer. That to me suggests quality has been taken out the side. It looks that way on paper too. VVD out and Blackett in is just an example. It's ok bringing in players to develop, but it should just be the odd few. Otherwise we're just a constant cycle. I genuinely believe that if the board just gave something, anything for RD to work with we'd be a right good side. We always look to score first now and create more than enough chances. We just lack individual quality.

I know I'm probably a dinosaur, but I would like to go back to the old way of having a manager instead of this head coach thing. I would like the manager to be in sole charge of who comes into the club, then he can work with the players of his choice. He would be given a budget, and would then have to wheel and deal to get the side he wants.
Under the present system everyone can just pass the buck, Ronny can say that he can only work with the players he's been given, John Park can say It's up to Ronny as he coaches the players, and both can blame Peter Lawwell and the board for not providing adequate funding.
I don't actually see what the benefit of this present system actually is, why is John Park better at finding players than Ronny, if he is so knowledgeable about players, why doesn't he coach them as well?.
I would like to see the manager be in total control of the playing side, then he will live or die by how successful he is.

In terms of personnel being brough in gerry i'm old fashioned myself. The scouting system should just identify players. The manager, or head coach, should have the final say.

Gerryc I think you are spot on. Sam Allerdyce has gone into Sunderland only on the basis that he will control all football matters from top to bottom. He will appoint his back room staff, agree on what players come and go etc. he knows he has no time there to deal with the politics that go on at a club. Also he has no one to blame either. Who knows what goes on at Celtic. I read today we are looking at 3 strikers. I don't actually think we have identified the type of striker we want. No wonder it keeps going wrong but who is to blame? Who carries the can? Well you can be sure it will be RD as long as he's working with a committee.

johnnymac and jim tim, i agree with you both, i think it is totally wrong that the person responsible for making poor signings is never held accountable, while the man who is landed with these players gets sacked if he can't do anything with them. I think at the very least, john park or whoever it is, should explain his signings and say why he thought they would improve us. I'm no fan of sam allardyce's style of football, but i do like his type of management, where everyone knows who's in charge, and the players know who they have to impress.

the club needs a colonic irrigation and the fans need more transparency as to who has decided what. Given who we have shown interest in i think it's pretty obvious we want a target man. Could do with one too. Who were the three strikers johnny?

johnnymac , if you are right about alderdyce i am certainly glad i am not a sunderland fan we may not always get new recruits that improve us , but i would have more faith in everyone involved in our recruitment than him.

i agree with you gerry, you obviously need a good scouting network though, the manager should decide though. I also think certain managers are better than this at others, and it's as important as tactics or whatever because if you are getting your signings right it's half the battle. Davie moyes is the best at this i can think of, if you look at what he spent at everton, and also the team he left behind, it was incredible. To get baines, stones, naismith, miralles, coleman for about £10 million is redicilous. So i also think it depends on the manager, - look at the signings wenger and brendan rodgers have made in the last few years, they've wasted at least £300 million between them.

old bhoy, whether you like or dislike allerdyce he is probably the only man who has a chance of keeping sunderland up. He has never been relegated. Has brought 2 teams up from the championship in his first season. People talk about his style of play but he only plays to the strengths of his players. He is no more long ball than martin o'neil was. Get £50 on sunderland staying up. He will do it. Anyway the point of the post is accountability which we don't have at celtic. The message is let the manager control the football side of the club. He gets judged on results so let him bring his own people in.

jimtim the three strikers were james wilson from man u on loan, emil berggreen a 22 yr old playing in bundesliga 2 and lennart thy from st pauli. Not sure about thy but wilson looks like done deal and we did bid £2. 25 mill for berggreen on the last day of the transfer window! I don't know if we do this on purpose on the last day because we want to see if we can get a bargain or if we are just useless at putting a deal together and get desperate in the end. Anyway that is the 3 i heard about.

i agree about allardyce keeping sunderland up johnny, it's a certainty. He has a level though, his primitive methods wouldn't work at a huge club. I don't mean fitness/sports science so much because i think he's into that, but like pulis it's the typical british game that teams were playing in the 80's. I've heard him saying that if he was the real madrid manager he would pretty much rule the world, - can you imagine ronaldo doing the sessions he would be putting on! There's obviously no point being a purist if you're losing every week, most managers can't find a balance though. I think you can still play attacking/technical football but still be aggressive and good defensively.

thats the point ,though, allardyce is probably right about the real madrid scenario,he would use the players he's got to the best of their abilities,he would'nt put ronaldo through any sessions that affected his performance on the field,he wpould'nt stick rigidly to his regime ,if he has one,he would want to get the players ,playing to the best of their abilities ,by tweeking his methods ,rather than forcing the players to conform to his methods, thats something ronnie has still to learn, although i think i would put my money on sunderland getting relegated

allardyce would play the long ball game even if he was manager of a pygmy peoples.

Johnnymac , I am sorry I have no intention of putting any money on Alderdyce to keep Sunderland in the EPL by his crude anti football tactics. I agree MO'N played the long ball game but he did have some footballer's and the long ball tactics at Celtic were mixed with some excellent football by P Lambert Petrov Lubo Agathe and Larsson. Now with the ROI , the team can be very hard to watch, but against Germany they played some good football. Any chairman that had even a slim idea of developing club or area wouldn't have Aldedyce near the club or city.
