Disappointed as my hope was a clean sheet. We looked astonished at the result at the end and at the fact we didn't turn up. They looked stunned at how easy it was. Big question mark for me over BRs ability to send out a team not to lose at this level.

It's a bit like another SPFL team coming to parkhead and playing wide open and trying to outplay us. There's a good reason they don't yet we try it against stronger opposition everytime but never seem to learn we must be more pragmatic and direct against better teams the missing no9 was glaring. We need our best 11 to even compete which sadly wasn't available and the weaknesses are their to see which we all knew as they are not new players although they can beat most spfl teams. Sunday is the important game.

We looked like a team with an inferiority complex . back to the slow sideways football . every players first touch poor . silly mistakes collectivelly and individually . not a one off as we've been like this before and not just under br . is it as simple as just not good enough?

Agree0 Disagree0

Rodgers style is terrible. It's designed for teams you can dominate which is why it works so well domestically.

But also it's a simple fact that our players are not good enough.

We needed better CBs like 3 years ago and still sit with Boyata who isn't even good enough.

Bain has done ok for us as has Gordon but we needed a new keeper for 3 years too

RB - Lustig needed replaced the last two years and Toljan looks a bit like a slow Gamboa.

We need to recruit better and be tactically wiser, simple as that.

It's hard with a team full of youngsters. We need to sign some proper players.

15 Feb 2019 02:54:22
Bit harsh Tesla. To be fair our back 4 + Bain probably touched the ball more than anyone else on the park, and probably kept it better than anyone too (granted that’s not really a compliment) . The problem wasn’t really the way we defended, it was the way we possessed and attacked. We completely misjudged their capability, and BR saying we gave the game away speaks to that too. We set up to go toe to toe with them, and as much as we, the fans, flip out that we don’t set up to sit back and counter on these teams, I feel like this is Rodgers proving a point - like he’s out to test the squad at the highest level rather than sneak a win here and there.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Feb 2019 07:10:56
It's harsh but also true. I don't really agree with us defending well and tbh it's not just about tonight.

Partly the managers shape but also other games show we need better.

Rodgers is out to win truly as oppose to steal wins but will that realistically ever happen?

How many years will that take? We are already 3 years in and we have hardly won a game in European competition.

Problem is we say we can't afford to spend, for this tactic to be effective you need a high level of player in every position.

So if we don't want to spend we need to be wiser tactically.

We can't have our cake and eat it by playing inferior players in a Spanish style of possession football.

That's like st. Mirren going toe to toe with us, we would hit them for 6.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Feb 2019 21:53:00
Unfortunately our style of play under BR is never going to cut it in these high level games. We just can't keep the ball well enough against top players that press and move at the speed they do. Once we inevitably lose it, it is panic stations.

Over the years those big results at Parkhead have come from getting the ball from back to front quick, long ball if necessary, getting the crowd roaring and willing them on. It is too slow and cumbersome against top opposition.

Totally agree - Rodgers record is Europe is abysmal.

Agree2 Disagree0

14 Feb 2019 22:03:36
That's a fair critique and I agree but we should still be able to take the game to teams better than what we demonstrated there. Too many not turning up again. Some will be scapegoats, a couple of usual suspects will get of without a mention and some will have not had much to work with tonight but they failed to rise to the occassion as a unit and without sounding too dramatic - I'm not sure anybody got a pass mark tonight. Manager included.

Agree1 Disagree0

14 Feb 2019 22:14:11
I've already stated on here that domestic dominance is much more important for me and I cannot fault the team so far this year; but I have got to admit disappointment at another home defeat - especially when we were in such good form beforehand.

However, the same stupid mistakes have cost us in several European games and it's not just one or two misplaced passes or careless lapses and there were several culprits - even the captain.

The bottom line must be that players can't be expected to learn from mistakes if the boss doesn't seem to either (in Europe) .
Under MON, Strachan and Lennon (who had their faults) we punched well above our weight in Europe - especially at Celtic Park and the players took the game to the opposition and got the crowd roaring, stadium rocking and took some big scalps .

This fifty three passes in our own half stuff, might keep possession (until a daft error) - but we created virtually zero in attack, lost the midfield and gave them the initiative.

Anyway; I miss the European highs, but they were a bonus; the most important thing is getting back to winning ways at Killie and go on from there for the trophies, the glory and the history.

14 Feb 2019 22:54:30
We need the benkovics Tierneys Rogics Ntchams and dare I say it dembeles for these games. We were losing these games with those guys plus Roberts and Armstrong the team is weaker compared to the past where as the opposition is not. Need to focus on the domestic games for now as these matches are currently beyond us.

14 Feb 2019 23:22:58
I think the manager has earned or deserved the courtesy of us all reserving judgement until he can field 4 first team defenders. Really think its as simple as this. Its like asking the bartender to fix you a cocktail with no ice, or glasses. Can't get to the potency. And I think we have some of that. Midfield may need some different instructions tho.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Feb 2019 23:34:28
Would have gave Forrest passmarks. He had the beating of his man. We just didn’t get the ball to him often enough. Which isn’t surprising given the majority of our passes were from Boyata to Jozo and back again!

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Feb 2019 01:21:52
@CC spot on mate you absolutely nailed it. The thing is BR has stated he won’t change the style of play regardless who the opposition is. Another scary thing is we have not had mproved one bit under BR in Europe.

Awful performance can't keep possession and never on the front foot brown only player ad have given pass marks to for his passion the rest were terrible.

The worst 2 passers of the ball are our central defenders but everyone is content to give them the ball to distribute forward. Why?

Aye I’d of went went with heyes to begin with he’s done well at left back and he’s played left back for a good period of time with Aberdeen when they had had injuries, would like to see Daniel church come into squad towards end of season quality young left back.

14 Feb 2019 23:26:57
Boyata can pass the ball. Even seen Jozo demonstrate it. Benkovic is one of the best passers in the team if not the best. I see what BR wants there and respect his trusting the personnel. Not always going to work with reserves.

I can't account for the daft errors over all these years--do other teams commit them with such regularity? --except that this is what decent sides do to you.

I thought Broony was brutal tonight as well, Brendan likes to play from the back but Celtic aren’t good enough for that, we played most of the football in our own third! it gets the fans tense when the defence passes bk to the keeper which in turn makes them make mistakes it’s horrible to watch, every time they pass to the keeper your hearts in your mouth.

Chrisbhoy7,
spot on, Emilio is too slow and looks overweight for me.
Both goals came from his lack of pace in keeping up with the attacker.

Rotten first half useless in possession and bimbscare at the back bain putting our players in all sorts of bother and the defenders back to giving the ball away in dangerous areas. big 2nd half coming.

I think Bain was the one saving grace when in procession bar perhaps just after the goal. Brown was poor for me.

14 Feb 2019 21:16:15
This is dreadful, not sure if it’s character, quality or both but as soon as we play in Europe we fall to pieces. Regularly can’t find a teammate, defenders look all over the place. Hardly any shots on goal, people say we are a million miles away from being a champions league team but there’s been hardly any evidence that we are good enough for the Europa.

Agree1 Disagree0

14 Feb 2019 21:48:25
It's character for me Quinn, no matter who your opponents are, a 10 yard pass is still a ten yard pass and players have struggled all night to do so. Arses dropped and everybody seemed quite happy playing it back to defence who were quite happy playing it side to side.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Feb 2019 22:48:26
If it’s character jim we are in serious bother then going forward, how do we see any progression in an arena that’s already stacked against us with other teams finances. Nothing can be done for character unfortunately, which means we need to change quite a few of them, to see any change . It’s certainly very frustrating to watch us in Europe for the last few seasons, like you said we can’t seem to pass the ball 10 yards . Most of the sides we play cut through us with consulate ease, at the end of the day all our team tonight were international players.

I'm on 2-0 myself. Most confident I've been about a European tie for a wee while. Valencia, yes, still have quality; but they're not up to much at all at the minute.

14 Feb 2019 14:54:17
IN my view it is going to be a lot tougher than many of us think. Valencia are a quality side and their form has started improving. I will be happy if we keep a clean sheet as it gives us a chance over there.

This is a match to relax and enjoy . For a change it isn't a miner disaster if we lose . Hopefully we win as I think everyone at Celtic have done their best filling the weaker holes to get us well prepared for the last half of the season . Our success will be based on completing another domestic treble and so tonight isn't crucial but a bit of European success would be the icing on the cake.

I agree with Chris; It's a bonus entertaining a top Spanish team at Celtic Park after Xmas and it will be our toughest game of this year.
We are full of confidence and the players look fit and on top form and I think we can beat Valencia tonight if we play to our strengths; however if we do not progress, past this round - then it's certainly not doom and gloom, with two more trophies to retain.
The atmosphere tonight could also help convince a couple of our loan players to possibly extend their stay - if it's feasible come summer?

Agree1 Disagree0

14 Feb 2019 18:42:30
This is no easy game as many on here think, we shall have to be at our very best to come away with a victory. Valencia have a problem in la liga in that they have drawn 11 games, they are scoring and defending well, just don't have enough to get a lot of the games over the line. We will need to be sharp from first to last minute tonight. We can do it COYBIG.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Feb 2019 18:57:24
Considering that Valencia have only lost four league games this season and La Liga with Real Madrid, Seville, Athletco Madrid and arcelon have been winning both the Champions and Europa League for the last lot of years, considering also that they only 6 points of an automatic place in next years Champions, they have to be considered favourites. I agree with RodgersAtWork and a clean sheet would be fantastic result but then as Jimmy Greaves said, football is a funny old game. I still believe in fairy tales and II honestly believe that we will win tonight.

If we cast our minds back to 2010 and the infamous match where Dougie McDonald overturned a penalty award and then lied saying the linesman told him to.

A short time after the match Craven, who was the linesman that day, resigned from his position.

A statement was released by the SFA saying he had resigned because of death threats. However, these allegations were never substantiated and it later turned out that Craven resigned because of bullying by Fleming and Dallas.

Now fast forward to last Celtic v Rangers match. Right after the match when the referees impartiality and decisions on the day came under scrutiny, the SFA released a statement to the papers saying he had received death threats.

Like before these allegations were never substantiated and it would appear that this allegation only came about to deflect away from the real issue of bias refereeing.
