Even though we lost, I'm still proud. Scotland played well tonight we are really crap but tonight we proved that England are also crap I was expecting a heavy defeat but hats of to the tartan army out sang the English all night yet they were severely outnumbered (as we were at bannockburn but still destroyed the English) well they played quite well, was nice to see brown bully welbeck and cleverly, and walkers filth tackle on Forrest should have been a red but England are a terrible team and that's a great feeling. Gandalf the green

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree the SFA are corrupt. One thing all the teams have in common is that they all feel the SFA are biased aginst them. I still love to see Scotland play well but then again, I like good football which explains why I have followed the best club in the world (just my modest opinion). Hail Hail. TinyTim

I just read a very interesting daily record article amido balde has apparently had a conversation with Fraser Forster in the shower about big fra fitting in at benfica he told Fraser that they are a big club with good players just like celtic and he would fit in no probs! I find that very funny because last week Neil Lennon said that its very hard for the lad because he doesn't speak one word of English yet the record says he had this conversation in the shower with Forster another fabricated story by the sounds of things.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You would think the reporters notepad would have been soaking and the ink would have been running everywhere . Serious in depth journalism indeed. DH

Agree0 Disagree0

To be fair Forster is from north east of England and speaks like he has his fist in his mouth so any conversation between him and someone who speaks Portuguese has to have been a fabricated story

Agree0 Disagree0

If you wiped your ar** with that paper more shi* would come off the paper.

Agree0 Disagree0

It is time that celtic pr department earn their corn and challenge these false reports which are to disrupt the club quite a few stories to distract with cl qualifiers next week

Also when we used to play against the currant buns the media mainly the dr would try and whip everybody into frenzy in the week running up to the game and sit back and hope for carnage and then get all high and mighty hail hail mm {Ed007's Note -

@5 and do what? This pile of crap has been dissing our club for years. I think it actually says something about our club that it doesn't challenge the nonesense coming from this rag. Don't buy it and if it's laying around on a table at work, don't read it. This is not a newspaper, it's a sevco propaganda leaflet.

Would of been good to see hooper start for England tonight. In my eyes a no-brainer seein as he was terrorising half the Scotland team last season!?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

14 Aug 2013 21:57:43
he was stretchered off in norwich's last pre season game.

Agree0 Disagree0

From the starting line up only Brown and Forrest played in the SPL last year, and they played for us so he wasn't terrorising them. About 3 others in the squad played SPL football. Hooper is not fit enough, fast enough or technically good enough to play for England. Good player for us in SPL, worked hard in Europe and scored a few goals but probably isn't even in England's top 10 for strikers just now.
cw-88 {Ed007's Note - If England have got 10 better out and out goal scorers than Hooper I've yet to see any.}

Agree0 Disagree0

None of the Scotland defence play here though. green jhedi

Agree0 Disagree0

Seriuosly I thought that was some alky in george square oh wait a minute it was ally mm

Agree0 Disagree0

Out and out goal scorers. If the following players were played in the centre forward role, not out wide or in midfield, and played the same number of games in the premier league, in my opinion they will score more goals than Gary Hooper this year : Rooney, Walcott, Sturridge, Lambert, and Defoe. Then there are other players like Carroll, Crouch, Zaha and Wellbeck who will be played for other reasons, I.e target man or to stretch the game out wide in forward areas. I think Hooper is a good player but just not as good an all rounder which you need at international level. I hope he can prove me wrong and score a barrel load this season but I just can't see it happening.
cw-88 {Ed007's Note - And if your Aunt had b*lls she would be your uncle. Rooney isn't an out and out striker, Zaha is a winger and Welbeck and Defoe are just muck. Crouch and Carroll will probably never get another cap between them and Lambert could be the same unless it is in another friendly.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Hooper is better than half the players mentioned. If it was back in the mid to late 90s when England had the likes of Shearer, Sheringham, Cole, Wright, Fowler, Sutton, Owen and Le Tissier to choose from I don't think Hooper would get a game but England have limited options now.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with Bond, Rooney is not quite mobile enough to play as the out and out striker and wants too many touches.

Of the other options, Sturridge is good and is Walcott, but Hooper is a better finisher than either.

However I would say that Lambert, Le fondre are also worth a try. Englands problem is that the want the striker to double up as the flair player. Where as most successful team use the striker as finisher.

Gerd Muller was the perfect example of that. Not a great player but scored goals for fun at international level.

Agree0 Disagree0

Suppose everyone is entitled to their opinion, but in the last 3 years while Hooper has been scoring for fun, all of these guys have been in the squad, friendly or competitive and whether they have been scoring for their clubs or not.
cw-88

Agree0 Disagree0

If hooper was better than those players why did Norwich sign him an not spurs Liverpool etc please explain ed because what your saying is deluded

Any signings celtic make have to be announced to the stock exchange first if they are going to affect the share price so keep an eye on that and that might be a good reference to wither we make a major signing or not.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

14 Aug 2013 17:49:15
I have the feeling that the spin at parkhead is now in full flow! No new major signings in this week and now it's leaked of a possible bid of 5 million for our keeper. Could it be the and L will come out and say no we are not selling? To make us all think they are doing well by us? It's a season old ploy, every year that we are fed, as not to spend any major money, no doubt by the end of the week, benfica will say there was no bid made, and we will be told that joe ledley has signed a new deal( which would be great ) but it's covering the cracks, really don't think we will spend 5 million on a player, more likely a loan deal

Believable0 Unbelievable0

14 Aug 2013 16:22:02
we missed the boat with finnbogasson, the dutch club stole a march on everyone when he was at loan to helsingborgs when he left just a few days before we played them, I just don't think we will spend 5 million on a player any more but lenny wanted hooper to stay and sign improved contract so that means we would not have got the 5.25mill for hooper so in theory signing finbogasson should happen its a like for like swap but do the board see it that way, I don't think they do.

Hello ED long time no post. Hope the legs holding up!

Been seeing a lot of negativity throughout the interweb with regards to Celtics spending or apparent lack thereof. With people forgetting we have spent a fair few mil on at least 3 'bought' players.

In addition something that fails to get mentioned is the redevelopment of Kerrydale ST/London Road surely this developments bill will be getting picked up by the club not the council. These projects don't come cheap. So although we are apparently cash rich for the moment I would have thought that given the probable view by the board that we have kept a decent squad (albeit with the departures) and are on the verge of CL football again ( barring what would be a disaster) this would explain why things have gone a little slower on the transfer front than most of us would have liked. I beleive this future development cost is probably taking priority right now as we have the cash in hand to cover that off without resorting to banks and increasing any debt etc.

I think a little more patience is required, I do not expect major movement till after the CL playoff as this is looking more and more like what is setting the budget for this season.

This said i'm not making excuses for not enhancing the squad to try and compete at the highest level again, I want to see the best players possible in the hoops, but maybe this is worth a wee consideration before we jump on the board are taking us for mugs bandwagon. If we don't enhance the squad with quality after the CL playoff then yes we do have a grumble with the board, but hey could be worse only need to look at the sevco comedy roadshow to show what could happen.

@Evinguu, good to hear from you, and some good news, as you have not posted for a while, wee Pat and I have decided to let both your posts today be "toll free" but starting now the "meter is running" lol Timalloy/Wee Pat Conglomerates Inc.

Agree0 Disagree0

The developments will be a white elephant if we do not have a team on the park to fill the stadium, stay successful and regularly appear in the CL group stages and beyond.
The anxiety stems from dismantling the spine of the team so early in the season while negotiating 3 tricky qualifiers when we are clearly not up to speed, due to close season etc.
On top of that - very unfortunately - we have 2 of the three signings out injured and more speculation about other important players leaving.
The demise of Rangers does impact on our domestic attendance totals and we have been very prudent in our running of the club way before that when we suffered in 1994.
But we still attracted very many good players on our budget along the way.
The club have always had unique and entertaining players for the fans to idolise and relate to that put bums on seats and can turn a match.
The manager and support know we need quality additions and if we are waiting until we negotiate the 3rd qualifier then it is still a gamble.
There has been much more disruption than I expected on the playing side and in my opinion a striker should have been signed in the Summer as Hooper was obviously leaving.
Obviously I hope we win the CL tie; and the game at Pittodrie will give an indication of our form and confidence.

Just read that David Longmuir is to take up a position as Sevco's Commercial Director (he also pocketed £200k as a pay off from SPL)
It tells you the true state of our Scottish Leagues when they do not even attempt to hide these appointments knowing none of the press lackies will question these "handshake" appointments.
Ogilvie, Traynor, Dallas and now Longmuir all supposed to be working for the good of the game, yet all magically get lucrative appointments because of who they support.
Please someone try and justify any of these appointments on a strictly merit based criteria. Timalloy

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ogilvie - This was a man who knew how to get things hidden, you wanted it buried he is your man. A man who can fulfill a role by not actually doing his job. Well worth an EBT and some dodgy shares that were just 'Resting' in his wifes portfollio. Above reproach and question within the MSM all in all a no brainer for his position.

Traynor - Got the job because he doesn't do walking away, not because he is a true blue or anything just that he physically can't do walking away. Is actually needed as his gravitational pull is holding Ibrox together whilst they try and hold off on required repairs just that wee bitty longer. A man of many talents then!

Dallas - A man who could take a coin to the heid like no other ( not that i'm condoning this by the way) Who better to train and encourage the new refs to the profession with such rules as 'Whistle when its green, not when its blue' A sad loss due to the unfortunateness of getting caught for that email.

Longmuir - Single handedly made the SFL what it was, Got great deal with Bells so all directors got a free bottle of cheap malt on demand. Then afterwards had the foresight to get IRn-Bru as the sponsor to cure the hangover.

The Finnbogosan train looks to be leaving . who next? Surely the point of scouting is to unearth players no-one else seems to be noticing,, get business done quick before attention towards them increases. It seems we target someone then all of the rejected bids etc are made public and teams who originally were not interested then stand up and take notice . only to scupper our offer. I wish all the moaners on here would get off the club's back. So we've not signed anyone for a couple of weeks, who cares- we've been handed 3 kind draws in the CL qualifiers and I'd expect us to go thru comfortably against Team Borat, in fact I expect the tie to be over after the first leg.

We've already signed a few players this summer and spent some money, I don't want to see us held to ransom on some guy who, albeit scored 28 goals in holland last season, is a bit of a risk. His record in Belgium was very poor and the dutch league is hardly a major league anymore.

as for Forster, 5m euros is a bit low given he's got 3 yrs on his contract but if we can get £7/8m i'd take it, he's far from irreplaceable and that would be a great piece of business.

Sit tight bhoys, we'll make the group stage again, win the league and at least 1 cup. We're stock piling money by the million and in a few years will be one of the cash-richest clubs in europe. guys like finbogason will come and go, in two years time we may well have forgotten his name, just like. what's his name we tried to sign.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I would not necessarily have a go at the board just yet however they need to remember fans support a Football team and not a balance sheet. Obviously we do not want to see overspending or reckless spending however we are looking for a replacement for Gary Hooper not Maradona or Messi. ~ Mrs E

Agree0 Disagree0

Not really sure i'm that bothered about us being cash rich, would be quite happy to break even and have a better team on the pitch, think we have liquidated enough of our assets without selling our keeper as well, about time we signed someone to bring a smile to our faces. they don't have to cost a fortune. EddieK

Agree0 Disagree0

No name poster - so we will qualify with ease, wish I like many others shared that same belief.
we have a stronger squad now vs last year? don't think so.
We reach the group stage then what? Dreaming of another last 16? Not with the current playing staff.
Cash rich, that's brilliant. I look forward to the h/t entertainment when the finance dept bring out lovely spreadsheets and regale us with tales of how much money we have. Oh that's right, I wont. I go to see the team play winning, attractive football.
Stevo Dundee

Agree0 Disagree0

Are you aware that Alfie's record in Belgium was.

Played 15 (8 starts, 7 sub appearances), scored 4, assisted 1 in 762 mins?

That is far from a poor record, more a case of not being given a chance for what ever reason.

Agree0 Disagree0

OP here - I was logged in when I posted but for some reason my signature did not appear.

I just think we're looking for things to complain about that aren't there. Who's to say finbogason would cut it in the SPL - plenty haven't with a good record elsewhere (rasmussen, miku, brozek, bangura). I don't want another £4-5m flop like rafael or juarez hanging over us

Hooper and Wilson had their reasons for wanting to leave, and I respect them, nothing the club could have done about it. As for Wanyama- no way we could turn down that bid, I don't blame the board for selling at all.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Aug 2013 08:19:11
I have to laugh when people say we can't spend £5 million on a striker and that the club is being ran in a prudent manner balancing the books etc . We pay TOP dollar for match tickets, merchandising etc and our "prudent" club have wasted way more than £5 million on dross trying to find a no 7 . Miku, Lassad .Brozek, Bangura, Rasmussen etc, at the same time we are asking for and getting top money in for Ki, Vic and Hooper . The club are now changing all the strips on a yearly basis at £55 a go! Time for cheque book to come out and buy players to build a team capable of holding its on on Europe rather than being content with participating, I have been all over Europe supporting Celtic and very few clubs are bigger now is time to spend some cash as penny pinching will cost us long term there is no point in having money in the bank and watching the Champions League on tv

Believable0 Unbelievable0

So you would rather gamble 5mill and 3 mill (wages) on one player
who could turn out as dross as the ones you quoted? remember a 5 mill player will demand wages that are approprate for that level of transfer and therefore blow the wage structure. Unfortunately the best we will get is a 2-3mill player in my opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

I can see your points mate but you are a bit jumbled up in them. We have had £100 off our season books this season, you must agree in these times that's not too bad.

On the wasted money for players, I will discount the loan players which I have always been against, you negate your point a bit. Banguarra and Rasmusson both came with a decent pedigree.Who's to say a £5m signing would be different? that's the gamble, we don't know. What we do know is it takes a helluva lot of money to run an operation like Celtic in a cash poor league.

Holding it's own in Europe? Sadly that's all we could hope for in the CL.If I am honest I think a third place and entry into the Europa would benefit the team as we could get a run in that.If we are honest with ourselves did anyone think rangers would die? This was a warning call to overspending clubs.

We are also, in my opinion, a work in progress. My thinking in this was the display of some of our youngsters in Dublin. We need to start using our young players more, especially domestically, this is the only way they will gain experience. If Lenny feels we have cover we should not be buying for the sake of buying. green jhedi

Agree0 Disagree0

You put a near SPEC of dust in finance to the club.
The real money men at celtic no what's good for us not you and throwing your spends back in cl.
I as a shareholder go to every agm and am more than happy.
Same as lennon said let's get into Europe for 4 years then let's see where we are.
We have a working cap of 50 million.
Most champions league clubs between £80 to £250 million overdrafts.
If either owner or bank called time would fold up faster than sevco.
Celtic is not a year on year thing its a endless project I would far rather future of club in good shape players after.
If the current club can't beat karagandy then the signing of 1 striker is pointless.
Come back in 4 weeks time and see if your been made to laff.
NDP

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we all agree that the continued safe unrisked long term future of the football club is the first priority. The same celtic for grandchildren, great grandchildren and generations to come. Holding cash reserves critically underpins that. Nowadays if you fail to pay a bill a minor creditor can put you into admin. Every time the team runs out in the hoops there's eleven star players right there.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hear hear totally agree, we as fans don't ask for much but with the champions league at our mercy each year we need to speculate to accumulate

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news everyone, but even if we signed Finbogason tomorrow, (which is unlikely anyway) he COULD NOT play against Shaktar as it takes 5 working days to get a visa, so time restrictions alone rule out a signing.
So we will now only sign a player if we make group stages of CL. Timalloy

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Surely Lenny feels we have enough to get through Timalloy? This will be tricky but the problems will be the pitch and the travelling. The simple fact is if we don't beat them with what we have then some questions need to be answered. green jhedi

Lets see if the Germans were really buying him for big money or whether it was a ruse to up the price for us.
PL is an extremely cool customer. I'll wager if we drew rapid Vienna, finnbogasson would have been at Celtic park the day after the draw.

I expect Forster to leave and thought it woulda happened earlier. Folks we have lost our top 4 players and replaced them with maybes.whats the point in having a very healthy bank balance but a much poorer team? The team made the bank balance strong with the champs league.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree that I think Forster will be sold because he will want to go he will say its to help his England career at this rate we will need a full team

Hoopybhoy

Agree0 Disagree0

Would prefer a 'keeper that commanded his area more, as for his size Forster takes a back seat too often.
