Ed I notice Bayo hasn't joined the rest of the squad in Dubai. Are we waiting on some sort of international clearance? Although I think I read somewhere he was in his honeymoon.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - I don't know anything about him being in honeymoon but Bayo's waiting on his work permit, he's not allowed to join up with the squad until that's sorted out.}

He’s arrived now I think he landed in Dubai.

FFS It's only Jan 12 and we have plenty time to do much more business in and especially OUT before the deadline and as far as I'm aware the league table or trophy haul hasn't disappeared as if by Sevco sorcery
Please do not be sucked into the media half-truths hype and hysteria because they have adopted a 'Help The Aged' stance in Govan.
For the first time in many-a-window we have been proactive EARLY doors and brought in fresh talent - to add to the best squad in Scotland and there are still more than two weeks left in the windae.

{Ed007's Note - I 🤬 hate the transfer windows OAB, it's actually the only times I REALLY don't enjoy doing the sites - even Ed002 takes some abuse on the English sites - and things like that and the constant questions about pish on Tw@tter and demand for by the minute updates of anything Celtic does makes it a heavy chore.}

13 Jan 2019 02:13:11
Ed I know how you feel as someone who has watched this page for a long time and enjoys just reading the post’s, I have started only paying attention to the green highlighted posts that you contribute the site seems to be full of a lot of negativity. Keep up the good work Ed can’t imagine how frustrating it is for you .

007 just let me say how grateful I am for you and this service which you provide. I admire your dedication and patience and whether its a paid job or you do it for love doesn't really matter as I am sure no amount of money could compensate for some of the drivel that you have to put up with. Courage, do not forsake us. I have said before on here that I am a recovering alcoholic and for many years my only active addiction is celtic. Ed you are like my dealer in the sense that I'd be a nervous wreck if it weren't for the site and the great work you do. Keep the Faith.

The papers have pretty much moved on from Timothy Castagne to Omar Elabdellaoui. I have no idea how much substance there is to either rumour, if any, but I find it odd that both their clubs have apparently doubled their "asking price" once they heard Celtic were interested. Have to say I do like the look of Elabdellaoui, he looks similar in style to Izaguirre when he first came.

Think a rb is a necessity this window lustig and gambo won't do and young Ralston the durys out although if we don't get one he'd be my pick.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jan 2019 19:35:43
Personally I reckon CB positions are more important now than the RB, as you say we have Ralston and he should get a run in the team.

I would like to see at least 1 CB brought in now, would like the Bosnian from Groningen brought in now as he out of contract in summer so could be relatively cheap.

All in 1992 for me, I was 10

1st Game - Pre-Season friendly against Man Utd in 1992, 25th anniversary of Lisbon Lions, match finished 1-1, Gerry Creaney scored)

1st Game (Non-friendly) - Celtic 2 Hibs 3 (92/ 93 season, only scorer I remember is John Collins, think we went 1-0 up then 3-1 down and got a late consolation)

1st Rangers Game - Celtic 2 Rangers 1 (92/ 93 Season, Collins and Payton scored for us, they did one of the most outrageous things I've ever seen and kicked off while we were still celebrating, sticks with me to this day, should never have been allowed)

1st European Game - Celtic 1 Borussia Dortmund 2 (92/ 93 Season, Stephane Chapusait scored both Dortmund goals I think, to my discredit couldn't tell you who scored for us! )

Good Q btw, good to have a stroll down memory lane!

2. 5th round replay 2011, 1-0. Mark Wilson. I've always avoided the Glasgow derby as I don't enjoy all the poison that goes with it, I went to this just to experience it once. That was enough. My ST has been in 117 for years and I've never put in for a move. Took my seat for the last game but only so I could give it to my nephew. I take great pleasure in telling that lot that I go to every home game, except ones against them, and that's my choice.

The Inverness Thistle win was on our way to winning 100th Scottish cup in 1985.
I was also at Dens park 1-1 Tommy Burns scored
The semi final v mwell Burns again scored 1-1
Missed both replays due to football training
Then the cup final v Dutd in another comeback. I think the 2 Burns goals were equalisers.
The “happy birthday Celtic “ game was my first victory against them in 8 attempts.
2 Celtic park draws and 5 defeats at ibrokes and I wonder why I’m so bitter.

Tiny Tim; we must be from similar era.
I wasn't allowed to wear 'colours' at all in the 60's and 70's because my father forbade it as we stayed in a 'staunch area'.
However, my uncle bought me a scarf I started wearing on the way to CP in the mid 70's when I went to games with my mates.
The Stein Years were a blessing and a revelation for young fans of that time in appreciation what Celtic were all about and we were very, very luck to have seen the Lions and their Legacy.

13 Jan 2019 02:36:06
1. Celtic 4 Morton 0, SC semi 1969.
2. Think it was Juennesse D’eshe in the EC in 1977. I’m sure Brian McLauchlin (who was my second cousin) scored that night.
3. Celtic 1 Rangers 3. At Hampden, late 70’s possibly Glasgow cup.
Anyone who can help in confirming details of 2 and 3 would be most welcome.
I was brought up in Ayrshire and used to hide my scarf under my jacket till I got on the supporters bus.
I also feel privileged to have seen most of the Lions and appreciate how lucky we were then and how lucky we are now. I also experienced the late 80’s and all of the 90’s which were tough times. Just as an aside, the 60’s and 70’s were phenomenal times for Scottish football and the early 80’s as well. Apart from us and the old Rangers getting to finals and wining trophies, you had Dundee in the EC semis, and even into the early 80’s Aberdeen beating Real Madrid in a European final, Dundee Utd cheated out of a EC final place and also beating Barcelona home and away. That all changed when David Murray came in and destroyed Scottish football by overspending bankrupting his own club and several others. I’m a bit concerned that Scottish football is in a really good place at the moment with the league being so tight but could that all be put in jeapordy again by Sevco overspending and going bankrupt while dragging others with them for a second time?

COYBIG, I think the 3-1 defeat to them was the Drybrough cup final in 1979. It was best known for cooper scoring a good goal for them.
Glasgow cup final that year was also a 3-1 defeat but the game was at ibrokes.
Also lost 3-1 in Glasgow cup final in 1976 but that game was at Celtic park.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Jan 2019 20:27:51
Thanks Leon Bhoy, the Drybrough cup, I’d forgotten about that. That must be one of the lowest scoring Drybrough cup finals ever. They were usually about 9-8 due to that mad change to the offside rule. Do you know if Lennox scored in that game?

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Jan 2019 23:13:01
Yes COYBIG Lennox got a consolation goal near the end.
In my first ever game Bobby Lennox scored the first goal.
I mentioned it to him at an Irish night in Saltcoats and he remembered the game due to George Best playing for Hibs and his goal was from a penalty kick. Out of all the goals he scored for Celtic that was the last of only 4 penalties he scored for us.

I have a question for you ed007

Who is actually in charge of making signings at Celtic?
Signings like Mulumbu and Commper and Izzy coming in and not really being given a chance so to speak.
Does our manager have any input or does he just work with what is brought to him?
It seems to me that maybe there is a bit of both going on here?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - Lee Congerton Brendan Rodgers decides what players the board should make moves for and Peter Lawwell (along with Financial Director Christopher McKay) then try and get deals done.
Some people think it's still like the 'good old days' when the manager was in charge of everything but that couldn't be further from the truth - Wenger at Arsenal is probably the last that worked that way. At most well run clubs nowadays the manager is no more than a coach and a cog in the footballing department as there needs to be a process that sees continuation if/when the manager leaves.}

12 Jan 2019 11:57:58
I agree that this is the 'model' practiced by big clubs that are run with profit and shareholders in mind, hoping that the manager they appoint has the coaching ability and tactical nous to make it work.
Unfortunately, too many of the players we brought in have either failed to make the grade, are disliked by the manager or are simply surplus, because we have too much competition in that position.
The 'Sales Dept' really need to get their act together, talk (and listen) to the manager and trim this squad ASAP.
Quality should always be preferred to quantity in successful business.

12 Jan 2019 18:25:36
I wouldn't even say the scouts fully decide which players either.

Our Man city players all came from mark lawwells

Under Lennon a big chunk of our signings came from agent dudu dahan

Even before Rodgers came in we had already been in contact with Sinclair and Dembele.

So id say even the board etc have handpicked some players too.

Ed007

How does our European scouting work. Have tried looking it up before but never really found any information. Read a article about Peter Houston hiring a car and watching games over Europe for Celtic.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I am not sure how Celtic's scouting works in Europe and it varies on the size of the club. But typically there are a number of people that a club retains or employs regarding the "scouting" of players including a permanent Chief Scout and a perhaps a Head of International Scouting who all will report in to the club via a Director of Football or whatever. There is also be a guy who co-ordinates all of the reports and ensures that they go to the correct person. Obviously no one at the first team level is going to see or be interested in any reports related to kids so there is a hierarchy that deals with young kids, potential academy players up to the first team squad. There are then scouts retained (sometimes on a permanent basis, sometimes on a part time basis and sometimes on an ad hoc basis) by clubs to cover specific countries and/or areas of the world - France, South America, Adriatic & Old Eastern Bloc, Iberia etc.. On top of that there will be freelance scouts (often ex-referees and amateur club staff who will stay within their particular area of expertise and region). Once a player has been looked at a couple of times and reports reviewed, then someone from further up this chain will take a look. Eventually a chief scout will take a look, or if it is a potential first team player, then perhaps a coach or a manager will take a look. Some clubs also have advisors which include, taking one EPL side as an example, ex-managers or highly respected people within the game.

As a good example of this system, there are a number of people that Chelsea retain or employ regarding the "scouting" of players including a permanent Chief Scout and a Head of International Scouting who all report in to the Director of Football (when newly appointed). There is a guy who co-ordinates all of the reports and ensures that they go to the correct person. Obviously no one at the first team level is going to see or be interested in any reports related to children. There are then scouts retained by the club in specific countries and areas of the world - France, South America, Adriatic & Old Eastern Bloc, Iberia etc.. On top of that there are both formal and informal "advisors" who often have an opinion to give - some of these are very well known people.

As for Manchester United, they will look to appoint a Director of Football and have been working hard on trying to persuade someone to come - but it is proving to be a real struggle to sell the opportunity to him. Under him, they will seek to rebuild the scouting structure by adding new people and generally follow the model used by the likes of Chelsea. In the interim they have already started to make changes so they are working hard to improve.

Within the English game, particularly at lower-levels and with youngsters, scouts often include ex-managers and referees at that level across Europe - and it would be reasonable to assume the Scottish sides do the same. There are certainly ex Youth Team referees and coaches who provide scouting services to clb..

With younger kiddies clubs often restrict their search area by distance - Southampton has a fan shaped catchment area stretching out from Southampton and up to Swindon to the Northwest and the outer-reaches of the metropolis to the Northeast. Sunday league and youth games in this area will often see someone scouting on behalf of Southampton as they concentrate on local talent. Further afield they look to local specialists for advice.

The London clubs, such as West Ham, have the benefit of two multi-tiered clubs that have developed numerous players who have gone on to play at the highest level - Chelsea, Spurs and West Ham have always had a good relationship with one in particular - Senrab.}

Does anyone know the exact reason why Commper has been frozen out? I mean we could have a cracking CB on our books or he could be dug meat but unfortunately I've not had the chance to make up my mind😂.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

12 Jan 2019 11:46:29
This transfer really puzzles me as why pick a player and then not play him. I don't think its an issue with his ability and probably more of a personality/ attitude issue. Maybe he did or said something early on that irked BR and since then frozen out. At his age also maybe lacks the appetite that BR demands to be shown in training and onto the pitch. I remember one of his initial interviews he stated he knew he was coming to be back up especially considering his age, winding down imo.

12 Jan 2019 11:53:27

Most managers these days tend to rule out signing big name players during a transfer window.
In England, Arsenal, Spurs, and I believe Man City have said much the same thing.
I don't agree with Celtic's transfer policy in that I believe you sometimes have to look for players who actually will improve our team, sometimes that improvement needs to be immediate and not 2 or 3 years down the line.
Having said that though, Rodgers can't really say there will be a marquee signing as any such player would be wanted by other clubs who could knock us out of the water financially, then he would be crucified for breaking his word.
I would be happy with signing players who are better than we have, they don't have to be big names.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jan 2019 11:02:30
What big names would come to the SPFL? If the likes of Weah and Burke do well and enjoy being at the club what's to stop us making a bid for these players?

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jan 2019 11:17:30
Celtic sign a player and the brainwashed support start going on about how much we will get for them. You buy players to win football games. Profit, money that's all you hear from our plc.

When was the last time we bought a player that went straight into first team Sinclair? . That will come back to bite us eventually.

Read a quote from Brendan's interview yesterday which said " second half of the season is about bolstering our offensive options". Well we seem to have done that with Burke, Weah and the boy from the Ivory Coast however for me our defence is equally important . We have lustig and boyata free to sign pre contracts right now, good chance both will go, benkovic will definitely head back to Leicester I'd imagine, Ajer I'm more than happy with at centre half but we need experience in their also. I know we're looking like signing a LB &RB from the states again being projects. We need experience in these positions also. We can't keep depending on young inexperienced guys to get us by, especially with the amount of qualifiers we play to try get into the champions league. Really hope Brendan's got something going on behind the scenes in terms of the defence because if we lose lustig, boyata, benkovic I really fear if we think we can get by with replacing them with inexperienced 19 year olds.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

12 Jan 2019 08:49:28
I think BR latest comments are another dig at the board.
I believe he isn't getting the targets he wants and that the club are once again in full control who comes in.
There has to be a balance of old and young. I understand maybe a project to come in at LB because we have KT. maybe even give Ralston a shot as number 1 RB.
However we need 2 dominant CHs with
some experience and l believe and 1in the middle of the park also.
BR comments mean the likes of wanyama coming in are all pie in the sky.
I also think it means we don't have the pot of cash we all think we should have.
I doesn't however mean that with good scouting we can't pick up some good players. the question is longer term will BR see it the same way.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jan 2019 10:12:48
We have spent our cash on wages. Wage bill is absolutely huge. Not always about new signings- McGregor, rogic etc 5 years will have a price attached. Our wage bill is 3x that of The Rangers (although they are catching up! ) And Brendan has bought Haynes, Commper, Hendry, Kouassi and about 10 others who are a waste of a wages. We don't have a bottomless pit of funds- and Brendan has spent a lot. CB/ RB has been a problem for about 4 windows now- he hasn't solved it.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Jan 2019 10:24:36
It could be, we may have decided to go with the defensive players already here - Lustig, Ralston, Ajer, Simunovic, Boyata, Benkovic, KT, Izzy, Gamboa and even Bitton (and there are plenty options) .
Possibly because we would not get realistic bids in this window, with so many near the end of their contract or simply not desired enough?
I would have hoped for at least one decent defender coming in now in preparation for CL qualifiers with a few surplus players leaving to free-up the cash and as it's only Jan 12, it may still happen?
