All I can say is thank God for The Lions and what they achieved.
I consider myself to be very, very fortunate to have watched us in three European finals ('67, '70, and 2003) and I know I will not witness my team appear in any more - probably in my lifetime, unless some monumental changes or minor miracles occur.
The use of politics and power, the obscene amounts of money and the elitist design of the CL has made it off-limits for most honest, humble teams no matter their tradition or class, to evenly compete.

Agree2 Disagree1

{Ed007's Note - Celtic were the only team that came through the CL Qualifiers champions route to win a game in the Group Stages.}

11 Dec 2017 19:17:35
Napoli and sporting, did they not win?

Agree2 Disagree1

{Ed007's Note - I missed out the word champions before route, sorry about that mate.}

12 Dec 2017 07:52:38
9 of them didn't win their leagues!

PSG better team but Real will go through.

Over 2 legs? 6-2 PSG.

11 Dec 2017 18:57:37
PSG to win 5-3 over the 2 legs. Im just happy that both clubs will be rageing at that draw. probably demand the CL should be re jigged again😂🤣.

Got to fancy Madrid! They just know how to get through these games! Hope it’s madrid anyway so I can see that Wee fud neymars face 🤣🤣🤣.

11 Dec 2017 19:47:59
I fancy PSG in that one, Real Madrid are struggling defensively this season and I can see PSG getting one or two away goals.

Agree1 Disagree1

11 Dec 2017 20:07:23
Aye how much gutted must PSG owners be feeling now after spending all that money to beat Celtic then get humped by Real Madrid next round haha.

Agree1 Disagree1

11 Dec 2017 21:05:37
Psg humped Barcelona last year, and with a friendly ref, and neymar managed to overturn it. Just think psg will have learned from that.

Agree0 Disagree1

12 Dec 2017 07:53:02
3-3 both ties. Penalties win for Madrid with Neymar missing his due to being halved in two by Ramos! 😂.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Dec 2017 10:36:22
I want PSG to trounce them. If they don't, then it puts our massacres in an even worse light.

I want them to rip apart much better teams than us, which is every team in the last 16.

12 Dec 2017 11:14:04
My thoughts too mp
If Christino takes the huff and doesn't fire, would love to see a 5-0 in Paris

But headlines next day won't be about how good psg are rather how bad real are.

My thoughts on Zenit (or really anyone we got) .

right i've been hammering on about bettering the squad. but with a tricky trip away in feb I'm now thinking what we need is consistency rather than taking a risk on an unknown player.

Stats guys, how many times have we play this season with our recognised strongest back 5?
Gordon, Lustig, Simo, Boyata, Tierney.

Imagine they are at their best, would we want rid of any of them?

Remember Boyatas crucial goals last season, 2 or 3 in a row. Lustigs reverse pass, KT wanted by the world. "How did he do that" Gordon save.

Midfield - Forest and Brown on current form, Rogic/ Armstrong/ McGregor/ Sinclair at their best, Ntcham, Eboui fulfilling their potential.

Griff and Demebele on top of their game up front.

How many games have we played so far this season?

Get to the break, rest key players, PETITION the league (we fund) to give us the weekend off before and after the Zenit games (as Astana did) .

We can take these clowns with what we have - I know they are backed by Oligars and we are backed by Oli Murs but these guys a doable.

Digi - my thoughts are as follows despite the unbeaten run continuing

Gordon - not good enough, decent keeper but we need someone far better. Our defence have no confidence in him at times

Lustig - love the guy but CB or nothing as he has been tore a new one many times this year especially when players have pace. New RB is needed, can’t see Ralston emulating KT

Simo - keep him

Boyata - Just like Efe, too big a club for him. Must be replaced as he isn’t going to learn to be a quality CB

KT - apart from a rest that’s well earned and needed he’s been great but needs better beside and behind him.

Midfield / Strikers for me are good enough. Think we need Kouassi to either show up or go, Browns replacement surely if he can show us why we paid the money for him.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Dec 2017 20:57:56
Lustig isn't quick enough to play CB for Celtic with the way we push our fullbacks forward.

Agree0 Disagree2

11 Dec 2017 21:07:29
Realistically January isn’t a good time to sign players, and we probably need rid of a few too.

11 Dec 2017 23:31:58
Digibanger are you back on the wine? We couldn't beat Anderlect at Celtic park. Got humped by the others. Zenit are top drawer. Anyone is doeable as you put it but not the way BR sets his side up in Europe. wouldn't matter who we got we ain't going through. Will take the flak coming from this post but be prepsred to withdraw it once we get knocked out.

Agree0 Disagree1

12 Dec 2017 05:14:36
A lot of mention on Boyata being a nightmare on the site lately. In my opinion he's a better defender than simunovic. At times simunovic is miles out of position, although Boyata makes errors he at least gets in the correct areas. Worryingly a goal is quite often scored (especially in Europe) and Simunovic is nowhere to be seen!

12 Dec 2017 11:17:00
As with most things these days i am in two minds so can see both sides of the arguement. I think even if we buy in jan we won't risk new players in this important tie unless theybreally really hit the ground running or we have more injuries. will simo be risked on the plastic pitch, for example.

Agree1 Disagree0

12 Dec 2017 22:38:45
No matter who we sign or how many we sign, I would be surprised if more than one or two play against Zenit in the last 32 Europa League match .
Rodgers needs his players all used to his system.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Dec 2017 15:24:02
Zenit is a tough draw but it could have been a lot worse. I reckon if we strengthen our defence in January and possibly add another attacking threat, we are in with a shout especially when they will be coming back from a lengthy lay off. We need to get a great result at home in the 1st leg to make it possible.

On the domestic front, think Hamilton will be a tough game on Wednesday. Given our point gap has decreased recently I think we need to play a strong team but still make a few changes - my XI would be:

3-4-1-2 (Our shape has to change! )

Gordon

Lustig Jozo Ajer

Brown

Forrest Ntcham Rogic Hayes

Dembele Griffiths

*KT needs a rest big time and Hayes needs game time
*Kouassi, Edouard, Sviatchenko to come off the bench.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

11 Dec 2017 15:17:57
Right. New centre back is a priority. Need a CM to come in to replace armstrong. Need someone better than Hayes to come off the bench to play the wing. Lacked want in the midfield yesterday and it really showed. Hibs shouldn't be giving us that much hassle in the middle of the park. Bring John Mcginn our way in January or we WILL regret it.

Zenit st Petes, tough draw, freezing conditions,4G pitch, they have some hard nuts playing for them and really racist fans, villas boas left them because the fans were trying to nut him, horrible crowd.

11 Dec 2017 12:38:23
They've given Mancini some serious financial backing too. Tough gig.

11 Dec 2017 12:39:22
This is a really tough draw and unless the board are going to stop talking about ambition and actually be ambitious in recruiting what we need this will be a home and away gubbing.

If we get the players to improve us it will still be a big ask, but if we don't were fecked.

Over to the board.

Agree4 Disagree1

{Ed007's Note - Zenit will be 2 months into the Russian league's 3 month winter break when we face them, it's an ideal time to play them imo.}

11 Dec 2017 13:21:19
Not the easiest draw but also not the hardest either! Good to play someone a bit different! But if we don’t sort our defence out January we’ll have no chance!

Agree3 Disagree1

11 Dec 2017 13:25:55
Time to burn my old Zenit top I got about 9 year ago.

Agree2 Disagree1

{Ed007's Note - You could make a half n half top out of it, Stevie. ;)

11 Dec 2017 14:07:47
We could do with a 3 month break ourselves Ed 😁.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I'm hoping that after our players get a rest during winter break and some tweaking during the January window by the time we play Zenit we are back to our best and they'll be struggling for match fitness and sharpness.. I think the draw could have been a lot worse for us although the travelling is a bit of a drawback.}

11 Dec 2017 14:38:47
The Zenit stadium has a roof and a constant temp of 18 degrees. No problem with the weather.

Weathering the storm may be a problem but the weather won't.

11 Dec 2017 14:44:05
There wasn't ever going to be an easy draw - considering our current status and performances in Europe - and it is as tough as hell.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Viktoria Plzen would probably have been the easiest draw for us and IF we do manage to get through I'd take the winner of the Plzen v Partizan tie in the next round. See how easy it'll be to get to the quarter-finals lol

11 Dec 2017 15:24:23
Travelling shouldn't be an issue 3hr 20 from London Just trying to talk the wife into letting me go won't be any colder than travelling through Galashiels yesterday 😬.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - 3hrs 20 on a plane - screw that!}

11 Dec 2017 14:55:11
Initial reaction was oh no until i read your comment regarding them being on their winter break Ed so now im quite happy with the draw. January can't come quick enough for us a good rest and a few ins and outs will do the trick its pretty obvious where we need to strengthen and i hope the board back BR.

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed007's Note - I'm sure the board know Rodgers will be looking to strengthen in January and I don't see why they won't back him.}

11 Dec 2017 16:18:56
Definitely doable. Recharge the batteries, invest in the defence, and hopefully be too much for them at home in the first leg. If we play a blinder and win 4-1 or something then there's a chance. Their stadium looks a cracker. 67,000 and close to the pitch so should be some atmosphere in there especially if they have the roof on. So hopefully the players won't be over awed by it.

Seems they were straight into Europa, topped their group with 5wins. Id like to think in a group of sociedad Rosenberg n Vardar we'd do the same but thinking n doing are somewhat different.

Just reading that we now need to play 4 round of qualifying for the CL from next season (whilst 4 teams from Eng, Spain, Ger and Itl will go straight in) , Champions league eh.

Absolutely vital we get in and bed in some decent defenders in January window.

We cannot wait til summer - these new players will need to be a full force by early July to be effective in these games.

I guess we should breeze the first 2/ 3 rounds with a tricky play off - but I think the window coming up will be one of the most crucial in many years.

Really wish the smaller countries would get together and tell eufa where to stick there cl and they'll see how boring it will be. same teams year in year out no surprises no romance but I'll no hold ma breath.

Agree2 Disagree1

11 Dec 2017 08:25:00
The problem I see is, the smaller countries don’t like admitting their a wee country, and also like be pals with the bigger ones (not rock the boat)
The CL especially is a cash cow, that basically bribes the wee ones to tow the line. I would rather see Celtic going to europa than get pumped every year off the big boys in th CL, the glamour games used to be good, but now we’re to far behind, and the £40m we get from it only benefits the major share holders, or the boards bonus.

Good point Mally; The corrupt fat-cat, hypocrites go on about 'Fair Play', The good of the game and sportsmanship but give preferential treatment to those who need it LEAST.
The super-powers of football generate more money than the rest - 100 times over and still they grudge the genuine champions of smaller countries entry to their elite, rigged tournament as even the draws are fixed to suit the bigger nations.

11 Dec 2017 15:12:50
We won't need to when we've won the Europa league ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Dec 2017 15:48:00
oh just had an extra thought on this (2 in a row for me)

if Eng, Esp, Ger and Ita all get 4 teams straight into the groups, does that mean we won't face a team from one of these countries in qualifying. hence easier last few rounds?

11 Dec 2017 22:37:00
They'll have other teams in the qualifiers I'd imagine.

Recently after champions league hammerings from the top drawer Bayern and PSG we had the usual plonkers from down south slating us and running down our unbeaten run? Now going on the results down there today it appears there proclaimed greatest league in the world is a one horse race! Game over in December will they sneer at city and run down the others as they try to up here running down our achievements? As the old saying goes you can only beat what's in front of you. Still top of the league a trophy in the cabinet European football after Xmas and still plenty to play for and laugh at uj 🙂🍀🏆⚽️.

I’m sure Man City are 10 points ahead too, after watching our home defeat to Anderlecht, it has knocked the wind out my sails about this team, maybe even a realisation we are an average team, of m hoping it’s just a confidence thing with Europe who knows.

Memaself i agree with you. The SPL is a poor league. Not 1 team apart from Celtic has made it tbrough tbe qualifying rounds for the Europa. In fact don't think any have got past 2nd qualifying rounds for years. That tells you all you need to know about quality of opposition. Zenit will score 6 over 2 legs. We may get 2 or 3 but have little chance of going through.
